APC governorship candidate in Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has appointed former Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, as Director-General of his campaign ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The announcement was made during an expanded meeting of the campaign council chaired by Hamzat on Wednesday.
Party sources said the choice of Obanikoro had been discussed and endorsed within the APC leadership structure before the public announcement. Council members reportedly raised no objections, describing the former Lagos Central senator as an experienced political operator with a strong electoral record.
Obanikoro’s selection was said to be driven by his long career in Lagos politics and his experience in both elective and appointive offices. Supporters within the campaign council described him as a tested strategist capable of coordinating a statewide campaign.
Obanikoro previously served as chairman of Lagos Island Local Government and was appointed Lagos Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture in 1999 by then-Governor Bola Tinubu. He later served in the Senate representing Lagos Central.
Following his stint as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana, he was appointed Minister of State for Defence and later Minister of State for Foreign Affairs under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
A former elected secretary of the Justice Forum and a long-standing figure in Lagos politics, Obanikoro is expected to bring organisational experience, name recognition and campaign management capacity to Hamzat’s 2027 bid.
