Appeal Court Ruling: Bode George Alleges Plot to Weaken Opposition Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has raised concerns over what he described as a deliberate attempt to erode Nigeria’s democratic system through the alleged misuse of state institutions and judicial processes.

George made the remarks on Tuesday while reacting to the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which upheld an earlier order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising state congresses conducted by committees appointed by the David Mark-led caretaker leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The PDP elder statesman argued that the court ruling reflects what he sees as a growing pattern of political interference designed to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to George, recent political developments indicate an alleged coordinated effort to deploy state institutions against opposition parties, a trend he warned could undermine democratic principles and electoral fairness.

He stressed that democracy can only thrive where political institutions operate independently and all parties are given equal opportunities to participate in the electoral process.

George also took a swipe at Abdulrahman Mohammed, who is recognised as the chairman of the Nyesom Wike-backed faction of the PDP, questioning his suitability to lead a party with the PDP’s history and national influence.

The PDP chieftain maintained that Mohammed lacks the democratic credentials and political experience required to head the party, insisting that leadership of the PDP should be entrusted to individuals with proven commitment to the party’s ideals and democratic values.
