President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on his 85th birthday, describing him as an outstanding leader whose eight-year administration left lasting imprints on Nigeria’s political, economic and geographic landscape.
Babangida, who ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, clocked 85 on Monday, August 17.
In a birthday message issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said Babangida’s contributions to national development had earned him an enduring place in Nigeria’s history.
The President recalled Babangida’s distinguished military career, which culminated in his emergence as Nigeria’s leader following the 1985 coup.
“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Tinubu said.
He noted that Babangida expanded the Nigerian economy, established major infrastructure and created several agencies and institutions that continue to contribute to national development.
According to Tinubu, Babangida’s foresight, wisdom and sense of fairness also played a role in the creation and survival of several states across the country.
The President said Babangida’s name and legacy would remain firmly etched in Nigeria’s history because of his contributions to the nation’s development.
Tinubu also praised the former military leader for continuing to offer his experience and counsel to the country despite withdrawing from active public life.
“Even in retirement, living a quiet life at his Minna Hilltop residence in Niger State, General Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation. His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,” he said.
Tinubu prayed for continued good health, strength and longevity for the former military President as he marked the milestone.
“I wish you continued grace, good health, and renewed strength. May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” the President added.
