Workers of the Federal Ministry of Education on Wednesday morning blocked the entrance to the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, preventing Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa and Acting Permanent Secretary Dr Folake Olatunji-David from entering their offices.
A video circulating on X showed a group of workers gathered at the gate as a motorcade believed to be conveying the minister arrived at the premises. The protesters chanted “Alausa must go” while physically obstructing access to the compound.
The action stems from an ongoing dispute between the ministry’s staff and the Federal Government over the proposed concession of King’s College, Lagos. The workers’ unions have previously called for the minister’s removal and strongly opposed the reported 35-year concession of the historic college to its old boys’ association.
In addition to the concession issue, the unions have raised concerns about staff welfare and other administrative matters within the ministry.
Despite recent engagements between management and the unions, the latest protest shows that tensions remain unresolved.
