Rihanna Blames Voter Apathy for Trump’s 2024 Victory
United States-based singer Rihanna has blamed voter apathy for Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election, arguing that Americans who stayed away from the polls also contributed to his return to the White House.
The singer made the comment while reacting to a viral Instagram clip of a conversation involving former MSNBC host Joy Reid and journalist Charles M. Blow, in which Reid discussed the political and financial controversies surrounding Trump’s administration.
“Believe it or not, those who didn’t vote at all also did this!” Rihanna wrote in her reaction to the clip.
Trump defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the November 2024 election to secure a second, non-consecutive term as president, having lost his re-election bid to Joe Biden in 2020.
Rihanna’s remarks placed the spotlight on the role of non-voters in the election outcome, amid continuing debate over the consequences of Trump’s return to office and his administration’s economic policies.
During the conversation, Reid argued that Americans who voted Trump back into office should accept responsibility for the consequences of their political choice, including the controversies surrounding his administration.
Rihanna, however, extended that responsibility to those who did not participate in the election, suggesting that abstaining from voting also had political consequences.
Although the singer resides in the United States, she is not an American citizen and is therefore ineligible to vote in US federal elections.
