In a striking turn of events, the freshly commissioned Car Wash–Moore Junction Road in Abeokuta has succumbed to the forces of nature, washed away by the very first rain since its inauguration.
The Ogun State Government, led by Dapo Abiodun, has swiftly attributed this unfortunate incident to a pressing issue: the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels by residents. This irresponsible practice not only jeopardizes public infrastructure but also threatens community safety.
Preliminary investigations revealed that waste materials obstructed the flow of stormwater during a recent heavy downpour, creating a dangerous buildup of water pressure that ultimately led to the road’s disintegration.
In a statement from Mr Kayode Akinmade, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the government firmly dismissed claims that poor construction or substandard materials were to blame.
Akinmade emphasized that the drainage infrastructure was meticulously designed to handle stormwater runoff. However, the accumulation of refuse created blockages that hindered the free flow of water.
“All materials used for the construction of the road underwent rigorous quality tests and met engineering standards,” the statement affirmed, highlighting that the contractor responsible for the project is a reputable construction firm with a solid track record.
“The incident was not caused by any defect in the road construction. Investigations point to the blockage of drainage channels by refuse dumped indiscriminately by residents.”
Currently, the contractor, alongside engineers from the Ogun State Ministry of Works, is on-site conducting a thorough assessment of the damage. Once this evaluation is complete, immediate remedial works will begin to restore the road and ensure safety for all users.
The government reiterated its commitment to maintaining critical infrastructure across Ogun State while stressing the vital role residents play in safeguarding these public assets. It warned that improper waste disposal not only damages roads but also leads to flooding, environmental degradation, and public health risks.
In a call to action, the government urged communities, market associations, transport unions, and religious organizations to rally around environmental sanitation efforts, sensitizing their members to the dangers of improper waste disposal. Residents are also encouraged to report anyone caught dumping waste into drains to the appropriate authorities.
The Ogun State Government remains steadfast in its commitment to rehabilitating the damaged road promptly and enhancing public awareness to prevent future incidents. Protecting public infrastructure, it asserts, is a collective responsibility that requires cooperation from all stakeholders.
