Abia Rep Chris Nkwonta declares defection from PDP to APC
Nkwonta made the declaration on Wednesday in a letter that was read by the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, on the floor of the green chamber of the National Assembly
Chris Nkwonta, a lawmaker from Abia in the House of Representatives, has switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nkwonta made this announcement on Wednesday in a letter that was read by the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, on the House floor. He represents the Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency in Abia state.
However, the Deputy Minority Leader, Aliyu Madaki, objected to the defection, citing Order 68 of the 1999 Constitution.
Madaki argued that a lawmaker can only leave the party that sponsored their election if there is a crisis in the party.
The Speaker ruled Madaki’s point of order out of order, stating that there is indeed a crisis in the PDP.
“The information available to me shows there is a faction,” the Speaker said, which was met with cheers from the APC bench.
