Ado-Odo/Ota begins 2,000-pullet poultry project to boost IGR, jobs and protein supply

Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area has commenced the brooding phase of a 2,000-pullet poultry initiative in a move aimed at strengthening food security, boosting internally generated revenue and expanding economic opportunities for residents across the council area.

The project, which began at the Ado-Odo poultry farm, is expected to deepen local egg production while creating a sustainable agricultural value chain capable of supporting employment and improving household access to protein.

Chairman of the council, Lawal Adewale Wasiu, described the initiative as a strategic investment designed to deliver long-term economic and social benefits to residents. He said the poultry scheme aligns with the administration’s commitment to practical, people-focused agricultural development capable of generating revenue for the local government while addressing nutrition concerns within communities.

According to the Head of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Omidiji Ezekiel, the programme will be implemented in two phases, beginning with the brooding of 1,000 pullets, while another batch of 1,000 birds will follow shortly to meet the 2,000-target projection.

“The first phase involving the brooding of 1,000 pullets has already commenced, while arrangements are in place for the second phase,” Ezekiel said.

He added that the council has put in place strict poultry management measures, including biosecurity procedures, vaccination and professional monitoring, to ensure healthy growth and high productivity of the birds.

The local government said the initiative is a continuation of agricultural interventions earlier introduced by Wasiu during his tenure as Transition Chairman, reinforcing what officials described as his consistent drive for grassroots agricultural investment and food sustainability.

Council officials also noted that Ado-Odo/Ota remains the only local government in Ogun State currently undertaking a poultry project of this scale at the grassroots level.

Once the birds mature into layers, eggs produced from the farm are expected to be distributed through local markets and community nutrition programmes to improve access to affordable protein while simultaneously contributing to the council’s revenue generation drive.

Speaking on the broader impact of the initiative, Chief Information and Public Relations Officer of the council, Alabi Sheriff, said the poultry scheme represents a deliberate step toward economic resilience and community wellbeing.

“This project is not just about poultry production; it is about building a sustainable economic model that supports food security, job creation and revenue growth for the benefit of residents,” Sheriff said.

He added, “The administration is focused on initiatives that directly impact the people, and this poultry project is one of the practical ways the council is addressing nutrition and economic concerns simultaneously.”
