Alaperu of Iperu Stool: Speculation Grows Surrounding Gov. Abiodun’s After-Office Ambitions
In the wake of the passing of the esteemed monarch of Iperu, Oba Adeleke Idowu-Basibo, speculation is intensifying about the ambitions of Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, whose ruling household is in line to produce the next king of the historic town.
Currently serving his second term, which is set to conclude in 2027, Abiodun has previously hinted at a potential transition from politics to traditional leadership.
During a meeting with traditional rulers in September 2022, while campaigning for his second term, he acknowledged his royal lineage, stating, “You know that I’m also a prince. Maybe after I leave office, I will go and sit down and think of how to go and carry a crown somewhere so that I will be crowned an Oba in my retirement.”
This remark, made during an endorsement by 47 traditional rulers known as the “Trusted Royals,” has resurfaced as the process to select the next king of Iperu commences, particularly given that Abiodun’s family is expected to play a significant role in this deliberation.
Furthermore, the discourse around Abiodun’s ambitions has been invigorated by his unexpected entry into the Ogun State gubernatorial race in 2019, where he successfully defied the odds to secure the governorship. Prior to the recent developments, there were rumors that he was considering a run for the Ogun East Senatorial seat upon completing his term.
This position is currently held by Otunba Gbenga Daniel, a fellow All Progressives Congress (APC) leader and former two-term governor, whose performance in the Senate has received widespread acclaim from his constituents.
