Anyaoku to Unveil Gbenga Daniel, Aminu Tambuwal, Other Political Heavyweights Ahead of May National Political Summit
In a major political development ahead of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, elder statesman and former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku is set to unveil a high-level committee of national figures tasked with coordinating the forthcoming National Political Summit of Nigeria.
The summit, scheduled for May 28–29, 2025, marks 25 years since the country’s return to civilian rule and comes amid renewed calls for a more inclusive and functional democratic system.
According to a joint statement issued Tuesday by The Patriots and the Nigerian Political Summit Group (NPSG), the unveiling ceremony will take place on May 1 at The Patriots Secretariat in Ilupeju, Lagos, with Anyaoku presiding as chairman. The summit’s theme—“Actualising a Constitutional Democracy That Works for All in Nigeria”—reflects a growing national consensus that the current system of governance needs urgent reform to curb rising insecurity and promote national unity.
Among the prominent names to be announced as part of the Summit Coordinating Committee are former governors Gbenga Daniel, Aminu Tambuwal, Donald Duke, Boni Haruna, and Kayode Fayemi. Other members include respected figures from civil society, the women’s movement, academia, and the political class, such as Senator Shehu Sani, Iyom Josephine Anenih, Prof. Pat Utomi, and Dame Pauline Tallen.
Organizers said the summit aims to forge a nationwide consensus around a restructured constitutional framework capable of addressing Nigeria’s long-standing internal challenges, including separatist tensions, political instability, and inequities in governance.
The committee’s primary task will be to facilitate the summit and draft an inclusive Constitutional Bill, which is expected to be submitted to the Federal Government as a proposal for sweeping political and governance reforms.
“The National Political Summit is a stakeholder-led intervention in response to heightening insecurity and political disharmony. It offers a unique opportunity to reset the foundations of our democracy,” said Olawale Okunniyi, Director-General of the NPSG and head of the summit’s joint secretariat.
The unveiling is scheduled for 10 a.m. at FRA Williams Chambers, Lagos. The full list of the 24-member committee features a blend of former public officials, legal experts, regional leaders, and youth representatives—an intentional mix aimed at ensuring broad national representation.
Political analysts suggest the summit could play a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s political future, particularly if the proposed constitutional reforms gain traction with lawmakers and the executive.
As Nigeria approaches another milestone in its democratic journey, the May summit is poised to serve as both a reflection on past democratic shortcomings and a bold step toward charting a more inclusive political future. Read More
