‘New NIA DG Ahmed Abubakar failed exams preceding his appointment’

Senator of Nigeria’s ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), Isa Misau, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of appointing incompetent people into his cabinet.

The Bauchi senator also said the appointment of the Director General of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency, (NIA) Ahmed Abubakar, was shrouded with favoritism. He alleged that Abubakar failed examinations preceding his appointment.

Misau said the appointment of Abubakar who was until his elevation, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs/International Relations, was improper.

“Today, the DG NIA that was just appointed, is he qualified to be there? He is not qualified. This is the person that failed two exams, we know. He failed two exams and just because he is close to people taking decisions, he was appointed.”

Misau has not said anything new, because many Nigerians have before now complained and criticised Buhari’s lopsided appointments, accusing him of breaching the federal character principle. The only new thing is that the allegation was made by an APC Senator who has before now, accused Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris of being corrupt and randy. But that does not mean that there is no element of truth in Misau’s allegation.

Before now, Senator Shehu Sani and other Nigerians have accused President Buhari of appointing incompetent persons into positions. So, one can conclude that Buhari is not only guilty of lopsided appointments, but also fond of picking incompetent persons. Is this why Buhari government has been struggling to find it’s bearing after two years plus?
