Army Neutralises Three Suspected IPOB/ESN Operatives, Recovers Weapons and Explosives in Anambra

Troops of Sector 5 of the Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, have recorded a significant breakthrough in ongoing operations against the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), following a successful operation in Anambra State.

The operation, carried out in collaboration with sister services and other security agencies, dealt a fresh setback to the group after security operatives acted on credible intelligence regarding armed criminals allegedly disguising themselves in military camouflage and Nigeria Police uniforms to carry out violent attacks in the state.

According to military authorities, the joint security team swiftly mobilised and tracked the suspects along the Ogboji–Ajali axis in Orumba South Local Government Area on June 23, 2026. The suspects were intercepted while travelling in a white Toyota Sienna vehicle, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire.

At the end of the confrontation, three suspected ESN operatives were neutralised while others reportedly fled the scene.

A follow-up search of the area yielded a cache of weapons and other items believed to have been used in the group’s operations. Recovered items included PKM machine guns loaded with 53 rounds of ammunition, two AK-47 rifles, additional rounds of 7.62mm and 5.56mm ammunition, four improvised explosive devices (IEDs), communication gadgets, a laptop and the vehicle allegedly used by the suspects. Troops also recovered identification and financial documents linked to suspected members of the group.

Military authorities described the operation as another demonstration of the effectiveness of intelligence-led and coordinated security efforts aimed at dismantling criminal and terrorist networks operating in the South-East region.

Security forces have since intensified exploitation operations across the area as they continue efforts to track down and apprehend fleeing or wounded members of the group.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Nigerian Army said it remains resolute, alongside other security agencies, in denying criminal elements freedom of action and ensuring a safe environment for law-abiding citizens.

The Army also urged members of the public to continue supporting security operations by providing timely and credible information, stressing that collective vigilance remains vital to sustaining operational successes and strengthening national security.
