Attention Ogun Ministry of Environment: Outbreak of disease looms in Sango-Ota as heaps of uncleared refuse litter

Residents of Ado-Odo/Ota LG have consistently expressed grievances about marginalization since the beginning of the fourth republic.

The absence of activities of Ogun state ministry of environment and the corresponding department at the Ado-Odo/Ota local government is evidently noticeable.

The rapid accumulation of refuse along Sango Ota – Idiroko road is alarming. This could lead to the outbreak of serious diseases.

Ota is a significant commercial hub of the state, and, surprisingly, the state government has abandoned it, despite the large internally generated revenue (IGR) the local government contributes to the state.

Ota is also the home of the incumbent deputy governor of the state, Engineer Noimot Salako-Oyedele.

Newsheadline247, on Thursday, visited Sango-Ota and took photos of several areas with large amounts of uncollected refuse.

The thread of trash stretches along the middle of the road from Sango-Ota under the bridge down to Iyana Iyesi, covering a distance of about 12km.

Two anonymous environmental officials from Ado-Odo/Ota LG spoke to our reporter and explained why the massive piles of refuse have not been cleared by the local government authority. They stated that the road to the dump site is in poor condition, especially during rainy weather. They mentioned that efforts are underway to repair the road.

Furthermore, the officials disclosed that the grader currently working on the road to the dump site is faulty and has ceased operation. Although they are working to procure another one, they cannot guarantee how soon it will be possible.

Residents of Ado-Odo/Ota LG have consistently expressed grievances about marginalization since the beginning of the fourth republic. The densely populated local government area suffers from poor road infrastructure, inadequate health centers, and substandard school facilities, among other basic amenities.
