Yenagoa, Bayelsa State – Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has officially declared the 4th National Wrestling Classics open, emphasizing the championship’s role in solidifying the state’s reputation as a premier sporting hub.
Represented by Secretary to the State Government, Professor Nimibofa Ayawei, the Governor highlighted that the tournament, already in its second day, has drawn fans with displays of exceptional skill and athleticism. He reiterated the state’s commitment to sports, noting the ongoing construction of a 25,000-capacity stadium scheduled for completion next year ahead of the 2028 National Sports Festival.
In his welcome address, Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) President Bashir Adewale Adeniyi commended Governor Diri’s “unwavering sponsorship” and noted that Yenagoa’s back-to-back hosting of major sporting events, including the recent Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Congress, underscores the city’s growing prominence in national sports.
Adeniyi outlined a “grassroots-first” strategy, pointing to wrestling’s recent inclusion in the Nigeria University Games (NUGA) and regional training initiatives in the Republic of Benin as evidence of the sport’s expansion. He also announced enhanced prize money, logistics subsidies, and new event features, including Beach Wrestling and a dedicated Games Village providing meals and accommodation for teams.
The NWF chief concluded with a reminder on discipline, reaffirming a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct among athletes and officials. The opening ceremony featured a parade of state contingents and a lively performance by the Bayelsa State Cultural Troupe, adding cultural flair to the sporting spectacle.
