President Muhammadu Buhari, and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar have condoled over the death of the founder of the Yoruba nationalist organisation, Odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Dr Frederick Fasehun.

Also noticeable among other dignitaries that paid tribute to the late activist is the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

President Buhari in a statement signed by his special adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, recalled the prominent role Fasehun played as a member of the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) which campaigned against military rule in the country.

He prayed that Almighty God comforts all those who mourn the octogenarian and grant peace to his soul.

Also, former Vice President, Atiku in a tweet on his official Twitter handle @atiku described Fasheun as a passionate Nigerian.

APC national leader in his statement described Fasehun as a renowned pro-democracy and good governance activist who left behind fine legacies.

He added that Fasehun was a committed democrat, tested political player and Yoruba nationalist.

He also charged the Fasehun family and other associates of the late leader not to allow his fine legacies to die.

Fasehun died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in the early of Saturday after a brief illness was 83.

Fasehun, a medical doctor, had formed the OPC in reaction to the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. He was also a prominent member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

It was as a result of his activities aimed at overturning the annulment of the election and ensuring that Moshood Abiola was sworn in as President, Fasehun was jailed by the General Sani Abacha regime in 1996 and he remained incarcerated until 1998 after Abacha’s death.

His trials did not change his belief and his family explained in their statement that he recently took steps towards finding solutions to security challenges through his foundation, the Frederick Isiotan Fasehun Foundation (FIFF).
