Buhari: Shettima, Gbajabiamila Arrive London to Bring Late Ex-President’s Remains for Burial in Daura

Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, have arrived in London on a solemn mission to coordinate the repatriation of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari’s remains to Nigeria.

The top-level delegation, acting on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, touched down in the early hours of Monday and was received at the airport by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum.

Senator Shettima made the announcement via his official Facebook handle, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Nigeria’s former leader and reaffirming his commitment to accompany Buhari’s body back home for final rites.

“I will accompany the remains of the former President to Nigeria for burial in Daura,” Shettima wrote.

The body of the late President is expected to be flown back to Nigeria within the next 24 hours, where arrangements are underway for his burial in accordance with Islamic rites in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

Further details on the funeral proceedings are expected to be released shortly by the Federal Government, which is preparing a state ceremony to honour one of Nigeria’s most influential and long-serving leaders.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who served as military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and later as the country’s democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, died in London on Sunday at the age of 82. He had been undergoing medical treatment in the UK in the weeks leading up to his death.
