His record of consecutive appointments, even in Obasa’s stronghold, and his ties to supporters of the new Lagos State House Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, indicate his growing influence
Change of Tide in Ex-speaker Obasa’s Base as Opeifa’s Rising Profile Wraps Lagos West
Kayode Opeifa, the new Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, is garnering significant attention in Agege and other areas of Lagos West.
Opeifa, who hails from Agege, is entering a political landscape previously dominated by former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Over time, Obasa has effectively eliminated opposition within and outside his party, establishing Agege as his political stronghold.
Opeifa, a former Lagos State Commissioner for Transport and ex-Vice Chairman and Team Leader of the Presidential Committee on Clearing Apapa Port and Access Roads under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, managed to navigate Obasa’s expansive power by remaining off his radar.
However, with Obasa’s recent removal from his influential position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, the political dynamics have shifted.
As part of an effort to diminish Obasa’s considerable influence and dismantle his political structure, opponents of the former Speaker are rallying around a potential new leader in Agege. Opeifa, who previously aspired to be a member of the House of Representatives in 2007 and sought a senatorial position in 2023, is being seen as a likely replacement for Obasa.
There are ongoing assertions that Opeifa is being prepared and empowered to take over Obasa’s role as the face of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Agege and its surrounding areas.
His track record of securing consecutive appointments, even amidst Obasa’s stronghold, along with his close connections to supporters of the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, are viewed as strong indicators of his emerging position. Read More
