Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has overtaken the United States to become Europe’s largest supplier of jet fuel for the second consecutive month, further strengthening Nigeria’s position in the global refined petroleum products market.
Latest European import data compiled by global commodities intelligence firm Kpler showed that more than 400,000 tonnes of jet fuel produced by the 700,000 barrels-per-day Dangote refinery were delivered to Europe in July.
The volume represented about 20 per cent of Europe’s total jet fuel imports for the month, placing the Nigerian refinery ahead of traditional suppliers, including the United States and producers in the Middle East.
The latest performance follows a record 466,000 tonnes of jet fuel exported to Europe in June, when Dangote first displaced the US as the continent’s leading supplier of imported aviation fuel.
Europe imported approximately 2.06 million tonnes of jet fuel in July, with Dangote accounting for the largest single share of the market.
The sustained performance underscores the refinery’s growing capacity to supply one of the world’s most demanding fuel markets while meeting stringent international aviation fuel standards.
Industry observers said Dangote’s growing presence is reshaping established Atlantic Basin fuel trade flows, with European buyers increasingly turning to the Nigerian refinery as an alternative to traditional suppliers in the US, Middle East and Asia.
Located on Nigeria’s Atlantic coast, the Dangote refinery combines large-scale production capacity with access to international shipping routes, allowing it to compete directly in major overseas fuel markets.
Its export momentum has also been supported by rising production. Jet fuel loadings at the Dangote Lekki export terminal reached a record 550,000 tonnes in June, while crude deliveries to the refinery rose to an all-time high of 660,000 barrels per day.
The latest figures come amid significant changes in global energy supply routes. Europe received limited volumes of jet fuel from Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Oman in July, while disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and shifting geopolitical conditions have encouraged European buyers to diversify their sources.
Against that backdrop, Dangote Refinery has emerged as a major and increasingly reliable supplier, expanding Nigeria’s role in international refined petroleum products trade.
The refinery has also continued to export diesel, gasoline and other refined petroleum products to markets across Europe, Africa and other international destinations.
“Beyond aviation fuel, the refinery has continued to expand exports of diesel, gasoline and other refined petroleum products to destinations across Europe, Africa and other international markets, further strengthening Nigeria’s position as a net exporter of high value petroleum products,” noted David Bird, MD/CEO, Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals.
