The proposal aims to transition to 12 years of compulsory education while maintaining the current 6-3-3 structure
Details: FG Proposes 12-Year Basic Education, Denies Scrapping JSS and SSS
The Federal Government has proposed a 12-year basic education model but has denied the claims that Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) will be scrapped.
This information was shared by Folashade Boriowo, the Director of Press for the Federal Ministry of Education. Minister of Education Tunji Alausa presented the proposal during the Extraordinary National Council on Education (NCE) Meeting held in Abuja on Thursday. It was emphasized that this proposal is for discussion purposes and does not signify an immediate change in policy.
Boriowo stated, “The attention of the Federal Ministry of Education has been drawn to misleading reports suggesting that the Federal Government has eliminated JSS and SSS in favor of a new 12-year uninterrupted basic education model. We wish to categorically state that this is not true.”
According to the ministry, the proposal aims to transition to 12 years of compulsory education while maintaining the current 6-3-3 structure. The goal is to eliminate barriers between JSS and SSS, allowing for a seamless transition for students without the challenges posed by an external assessment at that stage. However, this remains a subject of consultation and deliberation.
The ministry has indicated that discussions will take place with stakeholders before a final decision is made. The ultimate decision regarding the adoption of this reform will be announced at the National Council on Education Meeting in October 2025.
The Ministry urges the public to disregard false claims about the scrapping of JSS and SSS. It remains committed to policies that enhance access to quality education while aligning with global best practices. Read More
