Details: Why Ex-Speaker Obasa’s Loyalists Are Under Close Watch

Reports indicate that loyalists of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, are being closely monitored, particularly within the Local Government Areas.

Obasa, who held the position of Speaker since 2015, was removed on Monday, January 13, 2025. This development marked a significant setback for his lengthy tenure in the Lagos Assembly, which began in 2007, and occurred while he was on vacation abroad.

His removal has notably diminished his influence as a leading politician in the current Lagos State government. Since the event, sources reveal that “stakeholders” are keeping a vigilant eye on his supporters to thwart any attempts at regrouping and a potential comeback.

Obasa’s allies across the council areas have become a focal point of interest, especially with the upcoming local government elections in Lagos State, scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. At the time of his ousting, the former Speaker was reportedly working to expand his influence by securing more chairmanship positions for his supporters in the local government.

However, this ambition has been undermined, as the forces that ousted him are now intensifying their efforts to diminish his clout in various areas, including the councils.

There is a particular focus on candidates with connections to Obasa who are either seeking re-election or attempting to secure positions for the first time. The aim is to prevent him from regaining a foothold to mount any opposition.

Sources suggest that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to limit the former Speaker’s influence.
