From 9mobile to T2… Telecom Giant Unveils Bold New Identity

Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape witnessed a major shift on Friday as 9mobile officially rebranded to T2, unveiling a bold orange colour scheme and a renewed digital-first vision at the “Tech Meets Tenacity” launch event held at the Eko Convention Center, Lagos.

The CEO of Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Limited (EMTS), Obafemi Banigbe, described the transformation as more than a cosmetic change.

“This is not just a brand unveiling, it is the beginning of a bold new chapter in our history. It is a declaration that we are no longer who we were, but we are becoming something greater. We are becoming something more ambitious,” Banigbe said.

He explained that T2 aims to become a customer-focused, technology-driven, API-enabled operator, leveraging cloud-native infrastructure and data analytics to deliver faster, smarter, and more tailored services.

Highlighting the evolving demands of Nigerian consumers, Banigbe noted that “We see it in the rising tide of the youth, we see it in the entrepreneurs that are all over the place across our nation, in the boldness of our startup ecosystem, in the resilience of our SMEs, in the desires of our families to stay connected, to stay informed and to stay entertained anytime and anywhere.”

The CEO reaffirmed that T2 is “proudly Nigerian”, rooted in resilience and tenacity, and committed to adapting to market realities.

“In the face of overwhelming odds, our people, the Nigerian people, we have shown a spirit of resilience and of tenacity that continues to inspire the world,” he said.

Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, praised the rebrand, noting the impact of mobile network operators (MNOs) on Nigeria’s economy.

“The MNOs have invested boldly, spending more than 75 billion in towers, fibre, and now 5G, all without any government subsidy. The MNOs have powered our economy, contributing around 16 percent to our GDP, and creating millions of direct and indirect jobs,” Tijani said.

He urged T2 to let the rebrand signal more than a change of logo or colours.

“Let it be a renewed commitment to innovation, to service excellence, and to the millions of Nigerians whose lives and businesses depend on your network every single day,” he added.

The T2 name change follows LH’s acquisition of a 95.5% stake in the company about a year ago, marking the second rebrand in its history after the switch from Etisalat to 9mobile in 2017. Once boasting a large subscriber base, the network’s active users had dropped to 3.2 million by early 2025, underscoring the high stakes of this new direction. Read More
