LAGOS — The Island Club of Lagos, one of Nigeria’s most prestigious and historic social institutions, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of its revered Vice Patron, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, Ogbagba II, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

In an official statement signed by Aare Ayodele Bankole, KCOP, Honorary General Secretary of the Island Club, the club announced the transition of the monarch, who passed away yesterday at the age of 91. The statement was issued on behalf of the Chairman of Island Club, Omo’ba Dr. Rotimi Olasode Martins, KCOP, the Management Committee, and the entire membership of the club.

Oba Adetona was remembered as a towering cultural icon and a statesman whose life embodied uncommon leadership, deep wisdom, and unrelenting advocacy for traditional values and national development.

“His Royal Majesty departed this world yesterday at the remarkable age of 91, having lived an extraordinary life of impact, leadership, courage, and cultural preservation,” the statement read.

Described as a beacon of moral strength and a tireless voice for equity and justice, the late monarch was known for redefining kingship with integrity, intellect, and a progressive vision. Throughout his decades-long reign, Oba Adetona remained a strong advocate for true federalism, justice, and good governance in Nigeria.

“His reign witnessed unprecedented development in Ijebuland and across Ogun State. He was not only a beacon of traditional authority, but also a symbol of moral strength, developmental vision, and unshakable commitment to the dignity of the Yoruba people and Nigeria at large,” the club noted.

Island Club paid glowing tribute to the Awujale’s legacy, praising his invaluable contributions to the preservation of Yoruba culture and national unity. The club stated that his presence enriched both its history and the national narrative.

“We commiserate deeply with his family, the Ijebu people, the governor, Prince (Dr) Dapo Abiodun, CON, the good people of Ogun State, and indeed the entire nation,” the statement concluded.

Prayers were also offered for the repose of the royal father’s soul: “May Almighty Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings, accept his return, and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. Ameen.”
