Mahmood Yakubu Hands Over to May Agbamuche-Mbu as Acting INEC Chairman
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially handed over the leadership of the electoral body to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will now serve as the Acting National Chairman of the Commission.
The handover was announced on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
Professor Yakubu explained that Agbamuche-Mbu, being the oldest serving National Commissioner, would oversee the affairs of the Commission pending the appointment of a substantive chairman by the President.
“Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu will assume responsibility as Acting Chairman in line with the provisions of the law. I am confident in her experience, dedication, and capacity to steer the Commission during this transition,” Yakubu stated.
He called on the RECs, directors, and senior management staff of INEC to extend their full cooperation and support to the new Acting Chairman, emphasizing the importance of continuity, integrity, and institutional stability within the Commission.
Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, a lawyer, publisher, and administrator, has served as INEC National Commissioner representing Delta, Edo, and Cross River States since her appointment. Her assumption of office as Acting Chairman marks a historic moment, as she becomes the first woman to lead INEC in an acting capacity in recent years.

In her brief remarks following the handover, Agbamuche-Mbu expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in her and pledged to uphold the values of transparency, fairness, and professionalism that INEC represents.
“This Commission remains committed to credible elections and the strengthening of Nigeria’s democracy. We will continue to build on the foundations already laid,” she said.
Political observers have described her appointment as a significant step toward promoting gender inclusion and leadership balance within Nigeria’s electoral system. Read More
