MMF Unveils Grand Plans: 50th Anniversary Events Honor General Murtala Muhammed’s Legacy in 2026
The Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) has unveiled an ambitious lineup of national and international events to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of former Nigerian Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed (GCFR), in February 2026.
General Muhammed’s brief yet impactful leadership from 1975 to 1976 is remembered for bold reforms, including purging corruption, instilling discipline in the civil service, and championing a principled foreign policy rooted in African unity and liberation. The golden jubilee provides Nigeria with an opportunity for deep national reflection on these enduring ideals.
Dr. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, CEO of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, emphasized the forward-looking purpose of the commemorations.
“Fifty years on, General Murtala Muhammed remains a moral compass for leadership in Africa. His courage, clarity of purpose, intolerance for corruption, and unwavering belief in national unity are values Nigeria needs now more than ever. This anniversary is not just a remembrance; it is a call to action for the new generation of leaders to govern with integrity, patriotism, and courage,” she stated.
The events kick off on Monday, February 2, 2026, with a Legacy Art Exhibition at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Lagos, running until February 28. The exhibition will feature archival materials, visual art, and contemporary works highlighting General Muhammed’s life, leadership philosophy, and lasting influence—focusing on themes of discipline, service, unity, and national purpose.
On February 5, Lagos will host a Strategic Policy Workshop in collaboration with NIIA, examining General Muhammed’s transformative contributions to Nigeria’s foreign policy, particularly his staunch Pan-African stance and support for African liberation movements.
Remembrance continues on February 6 with an official wreath-laying ceremony in Lagos, followed by a special Juma‘at prayer and graveside observance in Kano. A welcome reception and commemorative dinner are scheduled for February 11 to celebrate key moments of his leadership.
The program shifts to Abuja on February 12 for an International Memorial Lecture and Leadership Conference, convening global and Nigerian thought leaders to discuss his anti-corruption crusade, vision for self-reliance, and disciplined governance.
On the anniversary date, February 13, 2026, solemn observances in Abuja include a wreath-laying ceremony, commemorative Juma‘at prayer, an Anti-Corruption Day, and a nationwide National Moment of Silence.
The commemorations wrap up on February 15 with an interdenominational thanksgiving service, underscoring General Muhammed’s dedication to unity across Nigeria’s diverse faiths and communities.
Dr. Muhammed-Oyebode highlighted the timeless relevance of his principles.
“General Muhammed believed deeply in the dignity of public service, decisive leadership and national renewal. Through these activities, we are ensuring that his vision continues to inspire future generations to serve with integrity, patriotism, and purpose,” she added.
The MMF has extended invitations to Nigerians at home and abroad, international partners, civil society organizations, and the media to participate and engage in honoring a leader whose legacy continues to inspire accountability, courage, and a renewed commitment to national purpose. Read More
