Nigerian Air Force Showcases Firepower in Maiduguri Drill to Strengthen Counter-Terror Ops

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base Maiduguri has conducted a Small Arms Range Classification Exercise aimed at improving combat proficiency and operational effectiveness as part of efforts to sustain a highly motivated and mission-ready force.

The exercise, held on 18 June in line with the Chief of the Air Staff’s vision, underscores the Air Force’s commitment to continuous training as a key requirement for success in ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations across the North-East.

Deputy Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, who attended as Special Guest of Honour, commended the personnel for their discipline, professionalism and dedication to duty. He urged them to maintain the highest level of readiness in responding to evolving security threats and protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Earlier, the Air Component Commander of Operation HADIN KAI, Air Commodore MB Ahmed, described the exercise as a critical part of the Nigerian Air Force’s ongoing training programme, stressing that regular weapons proficiency drills remain essential for effective mission execution and national security support.

Also speaking, Commander of the 105 Composite Group, Group Captain KO Nwachukwu, reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to strengthening base defence through continuous training, capacity development and strict adherence to professional standards.

The exercise featured live-fire assessments designed to test marksmanship, weapon handling and battlefield readiness, and was attended by senior military officers, representatives of the Borno State Government and heads of sister security agencies.

Beyond individual skill development, the drill further reinforced the Nigerian Air Force’s drive to build a highly capable and mission-ready force prepared to deliver decisive air power in coordination with ground troops during ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

It also highlights the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s broader strategy of joint operations, operational excellence and sustained collaboration aimed at restoring lasting peace, security and stability across the country.
