Nigerian Air Force Deepens NORINCO Ties on Radar, Air Defence
By Newsheadline247
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is seeking to strengthen its strategic partnership with China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), with a focus on air defence, radar coverage and technology transfer.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, reaffirmed the commitment on Thursday, October 22, 2026, when he received NORINCO’s Senior Vice President, Qiang Wenyu, and his delegation at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The engagement underscored the Air Force’s interest in strengthening cooperation with the Chinese defence corporation in areas considered critical to airspace surveillance, operational effectiveness and the development of local technical capacity.
During the meeting, Wenyu highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and China, outlining NORINCO’s capabilities in comprehensive radar coverage, equipment supply and technology transfer.
Aneke described the relationship with NORINCO as a valued partnership and commended the corporation for its support to the Nigerian Air Force and its willingness to facilitate technology transfer.
The Air Chief stressed the importance of developing indigenous capacity, noting that local expertise and technical skills would be essential to sustaining the service’s air defence capabilities.
He also expressed confidence in NORINCO’s air defence solutions, citing the Nigerian Air Force’s familiarity with the corporation’s systems and the opportunities they could provide for personnel training.
According to the Air Chief, these considerations could help improve operational effectiveness, strengthen surveillance of Nigeria’s airspace and support the long-term development of the Air Force’s air defence infrastructure.
The renewed engagement comes amid the broader importance of surveillance systems, modern defence equipment and technical expertise to military operations. Radar coverage can help security forces detect and track aerial activity, while technology transfer and specialised training can support the development of domestic maintenance and operational capabilities.
However, details of any new procurement agreement, specific radar systems, funding arrangements or implementation timelines were not provided in the account of the meeting.
The discussions nevertheless signal the Nigerian Air Force’s interest in sustaining defence cooperation with NORINCO while pursuing improvements in air defence, surveillance and indigenous technical capacity.
