Inside Afriland Towers Fire: Cause, Casualties, Emergency Response, and Next Steps

Afriland Towers fire on Broad Street, Lagos, left 10 dead and raised questions on safety standards. Afriland explains the cause, response, and support plans for victims’ families

Inside Afriland Towers Fire: Cause, Casualties, Emergency Response, and Next Steps

A tragic fire outbreak at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos, has left 10 people dead and sparked heated debates over safety standards, emergency response, and conflicting reports on the incident.

While speculation spread rapidly on social media, Afriland Properties Plc, the facility manager, has provided a detailed account of the fire, its cause, casualties, and the measures being taken in its aftermath.

Cause of the Fire

According to Afriland, the fire began in the inverter room located in the basement of the Towers. Despite safety systems being activated, thick smoke and intense heat quickly spread upward, making containment extremely difficult.

Escape Struggles and Alarms

Occupants struggled to escape as smoke blocked designated evacuation routes. Some resorted to breaking windows or leaping through them in desperate attempts to survive.
Afriland confirmed the building’s alarms went off, though some occupants claimed they did not hear them — a discrepancy now under investigation.

Response Time

Afriland clarified that contrary to social media claims of a morning fire, the outbreak occurred at 1:20pm. Fire marshals immediately activated internal protocols, with fire trucks and ambulances arriving about 20 minutes later.

Casualties

Ten fatalities were confirmed, including staff of United Capital Plc and officials of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). Afriland said the victims died mainly from smoke inhalation, not burns or building collapse.

UBA’s Role

Early reports suggested that UBA’s head office was on fire. Afriland explained that UBA’s first statement was aimed at preventing emergency services from being misdirected, before later issuing clarifications and sympathy messages.

Support for Families & Staff

Afriland expressed condolences and pledged to support affected families with both emotional and practical assistance. The Towers will remain closed pending safety, structural, and regulatory reviews. Staff are receiving counselling, flexible work arrangements, and medical evaluations.

Safety and Future Steps

The company stressed that Afriland Towers is fitted with certified safety equipment and undergoes annual inspections. However, it admitted that the incident revealed painful lessons, prompting a comprehensive safety review across all its managed facilities.

The Towers will remain shut until post-fire cleaning, safety audits, and necessary upgrades are complete. Afriland also confirmed the building is insured, with claims pending the official investigation report.

“This incident has offered valuable lessons that will not only strengthen our practices but also guide other property managers in safeguarding lives,” Afriland said in its statement. Read More

Trump Increases H-1B Visa Application Fee to $100,000

Trump Increases H-1B Visa Application Fee to $100,000

US President Donald Trump on Friday signed a proclamation raising the application fee for H-1B visas to $100,000, creating potentially major repercussions for the tech industry, where such permits are prolific.

The new measure, which could likely face legal challenges, was announced alongside the introduction of a $1 million “gold card” residency program that Trump had previewed months earlier.

“The main thing is, we’re going to have great people coming in, and they’re going to be paying,” Trump told reporters as he signed the orders in the Oval Office.

H-1B visas allow companies to sponsor foreign workers with specialized skills — such as scientists, engineers, and computer programmers — to work in the United States, initially for three years, but extendable to six years.

The United States awards 85,000 H-1B visas per year on a lottery system, with India accounting for around three-quarters of the recipients.

Large technology firms rely on Indian workers who either relocate to the United States or come and go between the two countries.

Tech entrepreneurs — including Trump’s former ally Elon Musk — have warned against targeting H-1B visas, saying that the United States does not have enough homegrown talent to fill important tech sector job vacancies.

“All the big companies are on board,” said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who joined Trump in the Oval Office.

Trump has had the H-1B program in his sights since his first term in office, but faced court challenges to his earlier approach, which targeted the types of jobs that qualify. The current iteration has become the latest move in the major immigration crackdown of his second term.

According to Trump’s order, the fee will be required for those seeking to enter the country beginning Sunday, with the Homeland Security secretary able to exempt individuals, entire companies, or entire industries.

The order expires in a year, though Trump can extend it.

The number of H-1B visa applications has risen sharply in recent years, with a peak in approvals in 2022 under Democratic President Joe Biden.

In contrast, the peak in rejections was recorded in 2018, during Trump’s first term in the White House.

The United States approved approximately 400,000 H-1B visas in 2024, two-thirds of which were renewals.

Trump also signed an order creating a new expedited pathway to US residency for people who pay $1 million, or for corporate sponsors to pay $2 million.

“I think it’s going to be tremendously successful,” Trump added. Read More

Fighter Jet Pilot Salary Across the World in 2025

Fighter jet pilots in the United States Armed Forces are among the most elite aviators in the world, operating from major bases such as Washington D.C. These roles demand exceptional mental acuity, physical strength, and high-level tactical training—traits that few possess

Fighter Jet Pilot Salary Across the World in 2025

In return, military aviators are rewarded with substantial salaries, performance bonuses, and benefits that reflect the rigors of their duty. The compensation varies significantly by country and pilot experience, but it consistently outpaces most non-military professions.

Fighter Jet Pilot Salary

Fighter jet pilots undergo extensive training and make immense personal sacrifices. Their salaries, while not always matching senior commercial airline captains, are still highly competitive.

In the United States, base salaries start at around $43,500 (O-1 rank) but can increase significantly with bonuses and allowances.

According to Aviation Job Search, experienced U.S. fighter pilots typically earn between $100,000 and $140,000 annually. Other developed nations offer lower base figures but compensate with benefits:

CountryAnnual Salary Range
United States$100,000–$140,000
United Kingdom£70,000–£100,000 ($90K–$130K)
CanadaCAD 80K–120K ($58K–$88K)
AustraliaAUD 100K–150K ($66.9K–$100.3K)

These figures typically reflect mid- to senior-level pilots. Entry-level salaries start lower but grow rapidly with flight hours, rank promotions, and additional roles.

Compensation Beyond Base Salary

The base pay forms only a portion of what a fighter pilot earns. Their total package includes numerous military-specific financial incentives:

Key Additional Pays & Allowances

  • Flight Pay (ACIP): $150–$1,000/month for active flying duties.
  • Combat Pay: Extra compensation during high-risk missions.
  • Deployment Pay: Bonus for stationed time in combat zones.
  • Hazard Pay: Compensation for dangerous environments.
  • Special Duty Bonuses: Additional pay for instructors, trainers, or operational leaders.
  • Housing & Dependent Allowance: Supports family and living expenses when stationed away from home.
  • Healthcare & Retirement: Full coverage for service members and their families, plus military pension.

These benefits not only add monetary value but also reduce the financial burdens commonly seen in civilian careers. Unlike commercial pilots, most military aviators do not carry student debt, as their training is funded by their government.

Life and Demands of a Fighter Pilot

Operating a fighter jet is mentally intense and physically punishing. U.S. pilots, such as those flying the F/A-18 Hornet or F-15EX Eagle II, routinely endure high-G maneuvers and decision-making under extreme pressure.

Pilots must be conditioned to resist G-LOC (G-force-induced loss of consciousness), maintain peak physical health, and master advanced avionics and weapons systems. Their daily routines often include:

  • Tactical and mission planning
  • Simulator and live flight training
  • Deployment readiness drills
  • Long and irregular work hours

These conditions make the profession highly selective and demanding, with only the best candidates advancing to fighter squadrons, Simple Flying reported.

Pathway to Becoming a Fighter Jet Pilot

Becoming a fighter pilot requires multiple years of education, training, and performance assessments. In the U.S., candidates must:

  1. Earn a Bachelor’s Degree
  2. Commission as an Officer via ROTC, a service academy, or Officer Training School
  3. Pass Selection Tests to enter Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT)
  4. Complete 1–2 Years of Flight School (including jet training)
  5. Get Tracked into Fighter Aviation based on performance
  6. Undergo Advanced Tactical Training specific to the assigned aircraft
  7. Join a Squadron for combat mission certification

The total timeline can exceed three years before pilots are mission-ready. Once active, a minimum service commitment of 8–10 years is typical—reflecting the $5–10 million investment made per pilot by the military.

Details: What Tinubu Discussed With Aisha Buhari

President Bola Tinubu has visited the Kaduna home of the late Muhammadu Buhari, assuring Aisha Buhari and her family that his legacy of honesty, patriotism, and integrity will be preserved

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday paid a condolence visit to the Kaduna home of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, where he assured Aisha Buhari and her family that the legacies of the former leader would be preserved.

In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Tinubu told the family that Nigerians shared in their grief.

“We are just here to assure you that we share in your grief, we share in your pain,” Tinubu said. “A loss in flesh is not a loss in the spirit, and the spirit that he left with us is a spirit of hard work, dedication, patriotism and honesty, and we are doing that. We assure you and the entire family that we will continue with our leader’s legacy, the mark he made for Nigeria. We will continue on the path of honesty, integrity, and great character that he imbued in us. May God help Nigeria, keep us united and together in the promised land.”

Responding in an emotional tone, Aisha Buhari thanked the President, First Lady, and his delegation for standing by her family.

“I would like to use this medium to thank you once again, the first lady, the wife of the Vice President, for standing by me and my family,” she said. She recalled her late husband’s values of honesty, justice, and integrity, urging Nigerians to emulate them. “I would like to pray for Nigeria, for peace to reign, for unity of the country, and for you, President Tinubu, to carry on with my late husband’s legacy of honesty, integrity, tolerance, accountability, and justice.”

The President was accompanied by top officials including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Governors Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Babagana Zulum (Borno), and Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto). Ministers Wale Edun (Finance), Atiku Bagudu (Budget & Planning), Bello Matawalle (State for Defence) and NSA Nuhu Ribadu were also in the entourage.

Earlier, Tinubu attended the wedding of Nasirudeen Yari, son of former Zamfara Governor Abdulaziz Yari, at the Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna. The President represented the Yari family in receiving the bride, Safiyya Shehu Idris, after confirmation of the ₦1 million dowry by her representative, Ibrahim Ashiru.

Tinubu commended both families for upholding tradition and urged the couple to build their marriage on faith, love, and mutual respect. The colourful ceremony drew dignitaries, traditional rulers, politicians, and business leaders, and featured prayers for the nation and the President by Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau and Chief Imam Dr Muhammad Suleiman. WHO Warns Nearly 1 Billion People Face Mental Health Challenges, Calls for Bold Global Action

The WHO has warned that nearly 1 billion people worldwide face mental health conditions, urging bold political action ahead of the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health

WHO Warns Nearly 1 Billion People Face Mental Health Challenges, Calls for Bold Global Action

The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded the alarm that nearly 1 billion people globally face mental health conditions, urging governments to take urgent and decisive steps to address the crisis.

Director-General Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus issued the warning ahead of the High-Level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and Mental Health at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) scheduled for September 25.

He cautioned that without bold interventions, millions of lives would be lost, while economies would suffer heavy strain.

“Non-communicable diseases include seven of the world’s top 10 causes of death. In addition, almost 1 billion people face mental health conditions,” Dr Tedros said. “Countries that act decisively to beat NCDs will save millions of lives, protect families, cut health costs, and unlock economic growth.”

The WHO chief stressed that mental health is inseparable from economic stability, pointing out that suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people worldwide. Globally, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds, with 73% of cases occurring in low- and middle-income countries.

In Nigeria alone, as of January 2024, the suicide mortality rate stood at 3.5 per 100,000 people, amounting to an estimated 15,000 deaths annually.

Dr Tedros noted that countries have been negotiating a political declaration over the past year, which will be finalised at the UNGA meeting. The draft sets ambitious global targets by 2030, including:

  • Reducing tobacco use by 150 million people
  • Expanding mental health care access for 150 million people
  • Ensuring 150 million people achieve control of hypertension

“Investing in NCD prevention is not a cost,” he emphasised. “It’s one of the smartest economic decisions any government can make. But often, governments face fierce opposition from industries that profit from unhealthy products.”

The UNGA High-Level Meeting is expected to produce a strong political declaration that will shape international cooperation on combating NCDs and scaling up mental health support over the next decade. Read More

Fubara Reaffirms Loyalty to Tinubu, Declares Wike “Our Leader” as Rivers Emergency Rule Ends

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has reaffirmed his loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu while acknowledging the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as “our leader” as he resumed full duties after six months of emergency rule in the state.

In a statewide broadcast on Friday, Fubara described the emergency period—declared on March 18 by President Tinubu to douse the state’s political crisis—as “enormously challenging but necessary to restore peace and stability.”

“As your Governor, I accepted to abide by the state of emergency declaration and chose to cooperate with Mr. President and the National Assembly, guided by my conviction that no sacrifice was too great to secure peace, stability, and progress of Rivers State,” he said.

The governor revealed that he resisted pressure to legally challenge the declaration, choosing peace and cooperation instead.

“In the course of the six-month period, Mr. President graciously brokered the peace process with all the parties successfully.

Nyesom Wike

“Our Leader, His Excellency, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and I, as your Governor, have all accepted to bury the hatchet and embrace peace and reconciliation in the best interest of our dear Rivers State,” he added.

Fubara noted that Rivers must now move forward, stressing that political leaders carry the responsibility of ensuring the fragile peace holds.

“We believe the political crisis is now behind us and that peace and stability have once again returned to Rivers State, though not without the hard lessons learnt from the emergency rule,” he said.

He thanked Tinubu for his “fatherly disposition and decisive interventions” in resolving the crisis, pledging his “utmost loyalty and eternal gratitude” to the president.

To those still skeptical, Fubara reassured Rivers people that “nothing has been irretrievably lost,” adding, “We must all remember the saying: the costliest peace is cheaper than the cheapest war.”

The governor also promised to refocus on governance and development, highlighting infrastructure, education, and healthcare as priorities. He vowed to complete ongoing projects and work harmoniously with the State House of Assembly to “recover lost grounds and accelerate the social and economic advancement of Rivers State.”

Fubara extended gratitude to Rivers people for their patience, as well as to religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and political actors who supported the peace process. He further acknowledged Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other National Assembly members for their roles in brokering peace.

“Once again, I thank and appreciate our Father, Mr President, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his timely intervention and dedication to ensuring the restoration of peace and stability in our State. I also thank our Leader, His Excellency Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, for committing to the prompt resolution of the political impasse,” he said.

“In all, I give glory to Almighty God. May God bless Rivers State and all its people. May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” Read More

Duverdier takes over from Mr. Sijbe “Siep” Hiemstra, who recently retired from the board, while Karaseva succeeds Bernardus A. Wessels Boer, who completed his assignment as Finance Director on August 31, 2025.

Alaafin of Oyo Debunks Claims of Ridicule at Esama of Benin’s 91st Birthday, Says “I Was Accorded Full Honours in Benin”

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has dismissed reports suggesting that he was ridiculed during the 91st birthday celebrations of Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, describing such claims as “unfounded and misleading.”

In a statement signed by Bode Durojaiye, Director of Media and Publicity at the Alaafin’s Palace, it was emphasized that the relationship between the Igbinedion family and successive Alaafins has been warm and cordial, tracing back to the 1950s.

“Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, who maintained a close bond with the late Alaafin Lamidi Adeyemi, extended the same gesture to the incumbent Alaafin, inviting him to grace his annual birthday festivities as royal father,” the statement said.

The palace clarified that upon arrival in Benin City, the Alaafin and his entourage were received with full honours, from airport reception to the provision of two limousines and the use of Chief Igbinedion’s special chair. The monarch was also recognized as the only royal guest granted access to the celebrant’s residence with his full delegation.

During the thanksgiving service at a Catholic church, Chief Igbinedion specifically requested that no other dignitaries be seated beside the Alaafin and his wife. However, due to considerations of age and space, one of his children respectfully appealed for the celebrant and his wife to share the same row.

“The Alaafin graciously obliged, and on the same seat were the former governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion, and his wife. All other dignitaries sat behind them,” the palace explained.

The palace dismissed the reports of humiliation as baseless, stressing that Chief Igbinedion had consistently honoured the Alaafin over the years.

“It is illogical to imagine that a man who has consistently hosted the Alaafin at his birthdays over the years would seek to ridicule him at such a milestone occasion,” the statement said.

It added that those present at the event witnessed firsthand the respect accorded to the Alaafin:

“Those who were physically present at the event saw how the Alaafin was honoured and celebrated by all.” Read More
