Zenith Bank Posts N2.5tr Gross Earnings, Rewards Shareholders with Higher Interim Dividend

Zenith Bank Plc has announced its Group financial results for the half year ended June 30, 2025, reporting a profit before tax of N625.629 billion and a 20% year-on-year increase in gross earnings to N2.5 trillion.

In recognition of this strong performance, the Board approved an interim dividend of N1.25 per share, representing a 25% increase over the N1.00 declared in H1 2024. This cements Zenith Bank’s position as a leading dividend-paying institution in Nigeria’s financial sector.

Interest income was a key driver, surging 60% from N1.1 trillion in H1 2024 to N1.8 trillion in H1 2025, largely due to strategic repricing of risk assets and prudent treasury management. Net interest income also grew an impressive 90% year-on-year to N1.4 trillion, while non-interest income contributed N613 billion.

Commenting on the H1 2025 results, Group Managing Director/CEO, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, noted that Zenith Bank’s performance reaffirms the creativity and innovation of our unicorn workforce in a dynamic operating environment. “Despite the huge provisioning requirements as the industry exits the CBN forbearance regime, we’ve seen substantial improvement in our asset quality. Our balance sheet remains robust with adequate capital buffers, positioning us well to seize opportunities across our key markets,” she said.

Building on this strong foundation, the GMD/CEO indicated that the Bank expects to accelerate its growth trajectory in the second half of the year. She assured shareholders that the robust performance, combined with the improved asset quality, positions the Bank to deliver exceptional returns, with expectations of a quantum year-end dividend for 2025. “Our shareholders can look forward to continued value creation as we leverage emerging opportunities and maintain our strategic growth with strong corporate governance culture,” she noted, highlighting the Bank’s track record of improving dividend payments even during challenging periods.

Looking beyond H1 2025, she reinforced her optimistic outlook: “We’re on a solid growth path that we expect to maintain through the rest of 2025 and into 2026. Our focus remains on innovation, digital transformation, and developing solutions that address our clients’ changing needs. With improving market conditions, we’re well placed to sustain this momentum whilst maintaining responsible leadership and delivering exceptional value to all our stakeholders.”

The Bank’s financial performance indicates strong fundamentals in a transitioning macroeconomic environment, with profit after tax reaching N532 billion and earnings per share standing at N12.95 for the period under review. Net interest income demonstrated exceptional growth, surging 90% year-on-year from N715 billion to an impressive N1.4 trillion, whilst non-interest income contributed N613 billion in H1 2025.

The Bank’s total assets expanded to N31 trillion in June 2025, representing steady growth from N30 trillion in December 2024, underpinned by a robust and well-structured balance sheet. Customer confidence remained strong, with deposits growing by 7% from N22 trillion to N23 trillion in June 2025. The loan book stood at N10.2 trillion in June 2025 against N11 trillion in December 2024., reflecting the Bank’s prudent risk management approach.

The Bank delivered strong returns with ROAE at 24.8% and ROAA at 3.5% as at June 2025. The cost-to-income ratio stood at 48.2%, reflecting necessary provisioning for regulatory compliance and the impact of inflationary pressures. Asset quality improved significantly, with the NPL ratio dropping to 3.1% in June 2025 from 4.7% in December 2024. The Bank maintains a fortress balance sheet with capital adequacy at 26% and liquidity ratio at 69%, both comfortably exceeding regulatory requirements.

Zenith Bank’s track record of excellent performance has continued to earn the brand numerous awards including being recognised as the Number One Bank in Nigeria by Tier-1 Capital for the sixteenth consecutive year in the 2025 Top 1000 World Banks Ranking, published by The Banker and “Nigeria’s Best Bank” at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2025. The Bank was also awarded Bank of the Year (Nigeria) in The Banker’s Bank of the Year Awards for 2020, 2022 and 2024; Best Bank in Nigeria from 2020 to 2022, 2024 and 2025, in the Global Finance World’s Best Banks Awards; Best Bank for Digital Solutions in Nigeria in the Euromoney Awards 2023; and was listed in the World Finance Top 100 Global Companies in 2023.

Further recognitions include Best Commercial Bank, Nigeria for five consecutive years from 2021 to 2025 in the World Finance Banking Awards and Most Sustainable Bank, Nigeria in the International Banker 2023 and 2024 Banking Awards. Dangote Refinery Rejects Marketers’ Request for Pump Price Increment Before Buying From Gantry

If implemented, this would result in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and diesel rising

Dangote Refinery Rejects Marketers’ Request for Pump Price Increment Before Buying From Gantry

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has revealed that the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) requested it to increase the price of petrol and diesel by N75 per litre, in order to allow its members to match the refinery’s gantry prices at their respective depots.

If implemented, this would result in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and diesel rising to as high as N950 and N1,090 per litre respectively in some parts of Nigeria.

The refinery disclosed that although it offers petroleum products to marketers at its gantry price, DAPPMAN insists on taking delivery via coastal logistics, an option that would add N75 per litre in extra costs. Based on daily consumption volumes of 40 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 15 million litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), this amounts to an additional annual cost of N1.505 trillion (N1,505,625,000,000), which they effectively asked the refinery to absorb and pass on to Nigerians.

“We wish to make it clear that we have no intention of increasing our gantry price to accommodate such demands, nor are we willing to pay a subsidy of over N1.5 trillion, a practice that historically defrauded the Federal Government for many years. DAPPMAN and other marketers are welcome to lift products directly from our gantry and benefit from our logistics-free initiative,” it said.

Nigerians to Get Passports in 7 Days as FG Unveils New High-Speed Processing Centre

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo says Nigerians will now get passports within seven days. The new NIS personalisation centre processes 1,000 passports per hour, ending delays and backlogs

Nigerians to Get Passports in 7 Days as FG Unveils New High-Speed Processing Centre

Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that obtaining an international passport will now take no longer than seven days, thanks to new high-speed facilities installed at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, gave the assurance on Thursday after inspecting the newly completed Data Personalisation Centre at the NIS headquarters in Abuja. He described the facility as a “game-changer” in Nigeria’s passport production system.

According to him, the new centre will drastically cut down processing times, allowing approved passport applications to be printed within 24 hours and delivered within a week.

“This means applicants whose requests are approved can now expect their passports to be printed within 24 hours,” the minister said.

Tunji-Ojo explained that the upgrade represents a massive leap in capacity. Previously, each machine processed just 250–300 passports per day, but the new system now handles 1,000 passports per hour, giving the NIS the ability to produce between 4,500 and 5,000 passports daily.

He added that the development positions Nigeria among the ranks of global leaders such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, India, and Bangladesh, which run similar world-class centralised passport systems.

The minister also noted that for the first time since its establishment in 1963, the NIS now operates a fully centralised passport personalisation model. Unlike the old system — which relied on 96 centres across Nigeria and abroad — the new process is more secure, automated, and efficient.

He recalled that the government inherited a backlog of over 200,000 passport applications, but stressed that the new system eliminates such problems.

“This project ensures that the era of backlogs is over. Officers no longer have to work around the clock to clear piles of applications. The system is now seamless, fast, and accountable,” he assured.

With the new facility, Nigerians home and abroad can expect quicker, more transparent, and more reliable passport services. Read More

DAPPMAN’s ₦1.5trn Subsidy Demand: Dangote Refinery Stands Firm by Its Statement

Dangote Refinery rejects DAPPMAN’s ₦1.505trn subsidy demand, saying it won’t absorb logistics costs. The company insists it has the capacity to meet Nigeria’s fuel needs and backs Tinubu’s reforms

DAPPMAN’s ₦1.5trn Subsidy Demand: Dangote Refinery Stands Firm by Its Statement

Dangote Petroleum Refinery stands by its statement on the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), published on Monday, September 15, in the following national newspapers: The Guardian, ThisDay, The Punch, Daily Trust, Nigerian Tribune, Daily Sun, Vanguard, The Nation, BusinessDay, Leadership, Daily Independent, and Blueprint, as well as on numerous reputable online platforms.

We wish to emphasise that any party who feels aggrieved by the contents of the publication is entitled to seek redress through the appropriate legal channels, without recourse to any so-called seven-day notice. We are fully prepared to defend our position.

We wish to clarify that the crux of DAPPMAN’s sustained attacks on Dangote Petroleum Refinery stems from their demand for an annual subsidy of N1.505 trillion to enable their members to match the refinery’s gantry prices at their own depots.

While we offer petroleum products to marketers at our gantry price, DAPPMAN insists on receiving products via coastal logistics, an option that would add N75 per litre in additional costs. Based on projected daily consumption volumes of 40 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 15 million litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), this amounts to an additional annual cost of N1.505 trillion (N1,505,625,000,000), which they are effectively asking us to absorb and pass it on to consumers.

Specifically, the marketers are demanding that we discount N70/litre in coastal freight, NIMASA, NPA and other associated costs as well as N5/litre for the cost of pumping into vessels to enable them to transport products from our refinery to their depots in Apapa and sell at the same price as our gantry.

We wish to make it clear that we have no intention of increasing our gantry price to accommodate such demands, nor are we willing to pay a subsidy of over N1.5 trillion, a practice that historically defrauded the Federal Government for many years. DAPPMAN and other marketers are welcome to lift products directly from our gantry and benefit from our logistics-free initiative.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has sufficient capacity to meet domestic demand and support export. We consistently maintain a closing stock of 500 million litres of refined products in our tanks each month. Between June and September, the refinery exported a combined total of 3,229,881 metric tonnes of PMS, AGO, and aviation fuel, while marketers imported 3,687,828 metric tonnes over the same period, an action that amounts to dumping which is detrimental to the Nigerian economy and the wellbeing of its citizens.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery remains steadfast in its support for the reform initiatives of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Through various strategic efforts, we have demonstrated our commitment to stabilising the Naira, cushioning the effects of fuel subsidy removal, positioning Nigeria as a refining hub, boosting foreign exchange earnings, and creating employment opportunities among others.

We enjoy strong working relationships with government agencies and remain committed to supporting their efforts, while not hesitating to hold institutions accountable where necessary.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery remains firmly committed to the progress and wellbeing of Nigeria, and is open to partnerships with patriotic and responsible stakeholders in pursuit of national development. Read More

Wike Slams Sowore Over Tinubu ‘Criminal’ Remark, Warns Nigerians Against Blackmail Politics

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike blasts Omoyele Sowore for calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal.” Wike says Nigerians are “lucky” to have a president who respects the rule of law

Wike Slams Sowore Over Tinubu ‘Criminal’ Remark, Warns Nigerians Against Blackmail Politics

Abuja, Nigeria — The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has condemned activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, for calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal” on social media.

Speaking on Thursday during the official flag-off of the construction of Arterial Road N1 from Wuye District to Ring Road II, Wike described Sowore’s comments as “unfortunate” and a dangerous trend in Nigerian politics.

“This is a country where somebody on social media will say Mr. President is a criminal; nothing will happen. You say all kinds of things you want to say, but nothing will happen,” Wike said.

Comparing the situation with global practices, he added:

“No matter how you see people criticize Trump, have you ever seen any American citizen on social media, or in public, say our President is a criminal? Have you heard that? But here, anybody can wake up in the morning and abuse the President, and we are happy. You are lucky you have a President who believes in the rule of law. You are lucky. Continue to be lucky. There are those you will meet that you won’t be lucky again.”

His comments come just days after the Federal Government filed a five-count charge against Sowore over the same remarks.

Wike also addressed the ongoing strike by resident doctors in the FCT, saying their allowances would be paid after due process.

“I have never seen a country where we thrive on blackmail,” Wike said. “This road is not my road, it’s not Wike’s road, it’s not Tinubu’s road. It is a road that will open up economic activities and improve the welfare of the people here. Nobody will blackmail me; nobody will stop me from doing what I think is right.”

The minister disclosed that the 2025 capital budget for health alone carries an allocation of ₦25 billion, stressing that his administration will prioritize both infrastructure and healthcare.

On the employment of doctors, he noted:

“They said they’ve gotten a waiver, fine. What’s my own? Go and employ them. I am not a doctor; I’ve never thought of being a doctor. Go ahead and employ them.”

Wike’s public outing also silenced viral rumours about his health. His media aide, Lere Olayinka, taunted critics online, saying:

“We have not seen Online Medical Doctor Omoyele Sowore of Sahara Desert Medical Centre.”

Olayinka also shared a video of the minister’s arrival at the commissioning, while confirming that the FCT administration will continue with its 16-day schedule of project flag-offs. Read More

2027: Sagamu Residents Lament as Gov. Abiodun Halts Tinubu-Backed Road Project

Outrage in Sagamu as Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun orders stoppage of President Tinubu’s federal road project. Residents accuse him of insensitivity and political vendetta

Sagamu Residents Lament as Gov. Abiodun Halts Tinubu-Backed Road Project

Residents Accuse Ogun Government of Insensitivity

Sagamu residents have erupted in anger after Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, ordered the stoppage of an ongoing federal road project approved under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The Paddy-Arikawe Oye Igbimo Road reconstruction, awarded by the Presidency to Minim and Tonye Nigeria Limited and facilitated by Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, was abruptly halted by the Ogun State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.

In a letter signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Engr. Dr. Yusuf L.O., and obtained by newsheadline247, the contractor was directed to suspend operations immediately on the grounds that “necessary permit/clearance was not obtained from the State Government before commencement.”

The letter further argued that the Presidency’s action “negates the normal due process which ought to be followed before commencing work on a State Government road.”

The decision has sparked outrage in Sagamu, where residents accused the state government of “pettiness and insensitivity.”

One resident who spoke anonymously said, “There are thousands of roads in the state begging for repairs and constructions, and this Ogun State Government is stopping the federal government from helping us out. This is the height of insensitivity. This governor has no empathy for the people.”

Another source close to the project revealed that the road was facilitated by Senator Daniel through the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA), with President Tinubu’s approval.

“The BCDA mobilised and started work on Wednesday. The speed with which they were stopped is shocking. This is not Daniel’s private project but a federal intervention. Instead of encouraging it, the governor is blocking it,” the source lamented.

Political analysts believe the move could reignite tensions between President Tinubu and Governor Abiodun. During the 2023 APC presidential primaries, Abiodun openly backed former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo against Tinubu — a rift that has lingered within the party.

Although no link has been drawn between that political rivalry and the halted road project, residents say the timing and manner of the stoppage “reeks of political undertones.”

The controversy is particularly sensitive in Sagamu, where residents claim state governments have abandoned key roads for decades. “Since Otunba Gbenga Daniel left office in 2011, major roads in Sagamu GRA — including the busy Paddy-Arikawe stretch — have reportedly seen no meaningful maintenance or reconstruction”

“This is not the first time. Even Aiyepe Road suffered the same fate. Anytime Senator Daniel facilitates a project, Governor Abiodun finds a way to frustrate it,” a source alleged.

While the State Government insists on due process, residents argue that what matters most is urgent development.

As 2027 draws closer, many say the governor’s action may prove costly at the polls, especially in Ogun East, where frustration over bad roads is already a major campaign issue. Read More

The Zanzu Prison Escape – ‘Living In Libya’ Series | By Femi Omidiji

Zanzu is the name of a place in Sabah, about 500km before the capital city Tarabulous, also known as Tripoli capital city of Libyan Arab Jahmariya

A Libyan migrant prison, used to illustrate the story

The Zanzu Prison Escape – ‘Living In Libya’ Series | By Femi Omidiji

You may have heard of Zanzu from a popular song by Portable. Yes, it is actually called Zanzu. He may have heard the word from some of his Libyan returnees but got the pronunciation wrong. It’s the name of a place in Sabah, about 500km before the capital city Tarabulous, also known as Tripoli capital city of Libyan Arab Jahmariya

Zanzu is a deportation camp heavily guarded by armed policemen. It is like a four-corner fenced prison with inbuilt rooms built into the four corner fences but has an opening in the center where they allow deportees to walk around in the day. They have another high wire fence covering the whole property, just in case one escapes from the main building; the outer fence will deter the escapee from leaving the property.

THE ARREST

I was at home that lovely Sunday afternoon, listening to one of Keith Sweat’s songs. I can remember vividly when we got a knock, a loud bang at the door, and a voice saying ‘open the door’ in Arabic. We knew immediately that it was the police. We all panicked, knowing that none of us had complete papers to stay in the country at the time.

We actually thought it was the immigration police, but it happened to be the Libyan illicit drug department police – fearsome-looking guys. We opened the door; they barged in and started searching everywhere. They found nothing. One thing I have always been wary of is drugs. I remember my dad warned me never to indulge in anything that has to do with drugs, and it stuck.

The search did not yield anything except one thing that was illegal in Libya at the time – dollar notes. They discovered that we all had dollars kept in our pockets. They collected all the money and arrested everyone. We were taken into custody and transferred to the immigration department, where we were all sent to the deportation camp.

I remember having about 140 Libyan Dinars with me that night, which they never collected. We were taken in by the officers in charge after the count was taken.

I spent over a week at the deportation camp, a very terrible place to be because of its overwhelming crowd waiting for deportation. Some had spent months there, languishing, and some deaths had also been reported due to poor sanitary conditions, bed bugs, and lice everywhere. Some had gone loco and were kept in separate cells. We were given an egg and hopza (bread) daily. I got tired and fed up with the place after five days of waiting, hoping they would deport us sooner than later.

Deportation is mostly done by road. They take you in buses and drive you down to an Algerian border town called Tamanraset and leave you there to find your way back to wherever you came from. To get back to Tripoli from Tamanraset may take you years, especially if you don’t have money. Even if you do, you still have many police checkpoints to contend with, and the chances of you getting rearrested are 99% if you travel by road.

So, after spending about a week in Zanzu, I studied the security details of the place, the daily morning and night counts before they send us into the cells at night and lock the door.

I gathered a few of my trusted friends and informed them of my plans. Almost all of them were apprehensive, saying it wouldn’t work, that I should forget it. They left. I called one of them again the next day and informed him that the morning counts were what they did now, that they no longer did the night counts before sending us into the cells, and that the plan would work. He listened and got the idea, but fear was the issue. I told him I was ready to take all the risks involved. We gathered like five trusted guys, all Nigerians. As we had people from other countries in the camp from every part of the world, the only guys we didn’t really trust were the Nigeriens.

There is a cell in the property that is not occupied. Most times, guys go there to defecate. It’s messy and dirty, so the guards don’t usually go there because it’s messed up. I told my men that when it’s about time in the evening for us to be sent into our cells, I would hide in the dirty cell.

THE ESCAPE

I concealed myself inside the dirty cell while everyone was directed to the main cell, and the large iron door was secured at the back with a detachable bar that could only be opened from outside the cell. It was during the winter season, and I knew I had to wait until the peak period of the morning when the cold would be at its highest, and the guards would likely be inside the office warming up. I waited until approximately 4 a.m. and then stealthily exited my hiding place, opened the gate without making a sound, and alerted my fellow inmates, who were already on high alert.

We had secretly informed around 10 Nigerian inmates about our escape plan, and those who had spent longer periods in the cell were eager to join. They quickly got up, and those from other nationalities who were not informed about the plan woke up, but they were unaware of what was happening. They simply observed that some inmates were packing their backpacks and exiting. We maintained as much silence as possible. Now that we were outside the cell, our next challenge was to ascend the very high building.

However, I had a plan in place. I instructed the inmates to bring their blankets, which we tied together to create a longer rope. Our next hurdle was to get the blankets up to the concrete roof of the cell. I requested that the heftiest inmates carry one another on their shoulders to reach the rooftop.

This was successful, and we passed the blankets to the third inmate at the top, who had made it to the rooftop. He laid down on the decking, held on tight to the blanket, and we climbed up one after the other. I noticed that while this was happening, the inmates in the cells were becoming agitated. The Nigeriens, who were our arch enemies in the cell, perceived us as being arrogant and decided to teach us a lesson by raising the alarm.

Fortunately, all of us had climbed onto the roof, and our next step was to scale the compound fence, which was also high with a perimeter fence wire. We descended one after the other into the main compound and started climbing the fence. By this time, the guards had started coming out to investigate the noise.

I recall that the fence was too high for me to grab the top, and I tried repeatedly to jump but was unsuccessful. I tried again until I suddenly felt someone grab me and push me up to grab the fence.

By this time, gunshots were being fired everywhere, and we were being shot at, but thankfully, none of us were hit.

We made it to the other side and took off in different directions.

This happened in the 90s… Read More
