Ogun Workers Demand ₦150,000 Minimum Wage to Cushion Economic Hardship

Organised Labour in Ogun State has demanded a new minimum wage of ₦150,000 for state civil servants, citing worsening economic conditions, soaring inflation, and rising food prices.

The demand was contained in a letter titled “Plea for Consideration of Upward Review of the New Minimum Wage” and addressed to Governor Dapo Abiodun through the Office of the Head of Service.

The letter was jointly signed by the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Akeem Lasisi; Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ademola Hameed-Benco; Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) Chairman, Isa Olude; NLC Secretary, Chris Omoneh; TUC Secretary, Comrade Olusegun Adebiyi; and JNC Secretary, Comrade Olayemi Oloyede.

Labour’s Demands

Apart from wage increase, the unions demanded:

  • Prompt salary payments
  • Transport provision via Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses with subsidised fares
  • Quarterly release and payment of retirees’ gratuities

Call for Parity with Other States

The workers argued that the Abiodun-led administration should follow the example of Imo and Ebonyi States, which recently announced higher wage approvals of ₦104,000 and ₦90,000 respectively.

“We call on the state government to consider a 100 per cent increase in the current ₦77,000 minimum wage,” the letter stated. “The governor should come to our rescue and accede to the request for a minimum wage of ₦150,000 to cushion the effects of the economic downturn on our day-to-day needs.”

“Unsustainable Wage Amid Rising Costs”

The unions further explained that the ₦77,000 minimum wage had become unsustainable given the cost of living.

“The declining purchasing power of essential goods, the high transportation costs, and the daily struggle to afford basic necessities and make ends meet made the current wage unsustainable,” they said.

They also argued that the Ogun State Government could afford the increase, pointing to its rising Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and higher allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

Labour leaders appealed to Governor Abiodun to save workers from “hunger and untold hardship” brought on by fuel subsidy removal and unstable exchange rates.

The letter reads, “Your Excellency,

“PLEA FOR CONSIDERATION OF UPWARD REVIEW OF THE NEW MINIMUM WAGE

“We respectfully present the warmest of fraternal compliments to Your Excellency as expressed by the State Leadership of the Organised Labour as well as the entire affiliates of our Congresses, and most especially, the State Government Civil/Public Service employees.”

“In the same breath, mention must also be made of those various economic and social interventions aimed purposely to help ameliorate the hard-pressing existential realities that we all are experiencing. Prompt payment of salary, the CNG buses providing us transport with subsidised fares, quarterly release and payment of gratuity of retirees, etc.

“To us, Your Excellency, these measures which your administration has relentlessly pursued should ordinarily, in a few months, provide the enablement for the entire citizens of our dear State. Tenaciously, we hold on to the belief that the Renewed Hope crusade of the President of our Republic, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, surely, will lead us all into the Nigeria of our dreams.”

“However, Your Excellency, in spite of these sustained and commendable efforts of both the Federal and the State Governments, our day-to-day living has been filled with highly depressive thoughts. Quite frankly, and as though the nation’s economic dynamics have been on overdrive, we, the salary earners, have come to the point of self-blame and regrets.”

“It is needless to start itemising one after another, either from foods, clothing, or, as basic as medicine, whose costs, in recent times, have been on the upswing. Evidences of our sorry state are readily found in the rapidly expanding street trading in most of our state’s major cities and towns, whilst we, the government workers, are daily being bombarded with unimaginable financial requests from relatives and dependants.

“Increasingly, and it calls for worry, actually, that people with curable ailments now patronise unorthodox medical practitioners whose herbal curative claims are not only bogus but also mind boggling Perhaps it is this disturbing socioeconomic trend that the nation’s number one citizen has come to grasp with when His Excellency appealed to the subnationals’ administrative executives to “attend to your people’s needs.”

“Your Excellency, we humbly plead with you, Sir, to kindly find means to urgently rescue us from this depressing economic situation. We are strongly convinced that the recent exemplary gestures of the upward minimum wage reviews in Imo and Ebonyi States were in clear and loud responses to President Tinubu’s charge and that of the citizens’ cries. Incidentally, the two States are in South East and good enough, Your Excellency is the General Officer Commanding, i.e., the sitting Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Governors’ Forum.”

“The South of our nation leads always, whilst the rest aligns. It can further be dissected also that it is via the superstructure of the Public Service and its governance chains that state wealth gets distributed. It will be in order, by all economic theoretical standards and principles, that the use and employment of upward review of minimum wage serves as an effective tool to reboot dwindling fortunes of citizens.”

“Furthermore, Your Excellency, the various statistics on the nation’s economy are more telling that indeed, the reforms of the Federal Government, though are yielding desired and targeted outcomes but the expected corresponding impacts have not been felt by common citizens.”

“The huge turnovers, as reflected in the Federation Account Allocation Committee [FAAC] disbursements since the birth of the reforms amongst other governments’ incomes, are ready testament to the improved fortunes of the country. Curiously, however, these positive signals are clearly at variance with our realities of living. Suffice to plead with Your Excellency to kindly and urgently consider the upward minimum wage review.”

“The seventy-seven thousand naira [#77, 000.00] benchmark has obviously come to nought in the face of the skyrocketing prices of goods and services. As widely reported, the dwindling purchasing power, especially for we, the salary earners, is driven majorly by high inflation and the devaluation of the nation’s currency, the naira, which ultimately reduces the value of earnings and pauperise us the more.”

“Of certain, the removal of fuel subsidies, increased electricity tariffs, and the unification of the foreign exchange market precipitated the observed decrease in our household spending, lowering our consumption of essential goods generally, and we struggle daily to afford even basic necessities. To effectively and adequately tackle the challenge, we opined that a 100% increase of the current minimum wage rate could be a fair, justifiable consideration.”

“Now is the auspicious moment in which Your Excellency showcases your renowned and profound trait of Omolu’abi. We respectfully plead your magnanimity to return a little smile to our cheeks. In the meantime and as always, you have our esteemed and kindest assurances, Your Excellency.”

CNG Trucks: Nigerians Rally Behind Dangote Refinery as NUPENG Threatens Strike

Nigerians on social media have rallied behind the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in the wake of opposition from the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) over the refinery’s proposed deployment of 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks for fuel distribution.

NUPENG’s declaration of a nationwide strike in protest against the initiative has ignited widespread debate across digital platforms, with timelines on X, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn flooded with commentary, many of which favour the refinery’s move towards cleaner and more efficient fuel logistics.

For many Nigerians, this is not just a battle between a union and a private company; it is a fight over the future of fuel distribution, efficiency, and the nation’s economic direction.

Some social media users were frustrated by what they see as decades of union dominance and disruption.

On X, @olat187 noted, “Nigerians stand with @DangoteGroup. @officialNUPENG9 has been making the lives of Nigerians unbearable for years.” James O. echoed this sentiment more profoundly, stating, “Nigerians, the ONLY business leader and saviour we have that keeps ordinary citizens surviving is @DangoteGroup. Nigerians are fully behind you all. If they like they should go on strike, gone are those days, Nigerians are growing beyond all this.”

Industry professionals and commentators are also weighing in with sharp rebukes of NUPENG’s stance. Prof Olushola Bamidele drew an analogy that resonated widely: “So, if I come up with a business innovation, and it threatens your own business, you can try to force me to abandon my innovation? I sell ogbono seed in my village to middle men who take them to the city. I decide one day to buy a pick-up van so I can deliver to the customer directly in the city. Should the middle man fight me or find a way to survive? I don’t understand the logic of this impending NUPENG strike.”

Similarly, Dr. Tosan Harriman pointed out, “For a very long time it is obvious @officialNUPENG9 is spoiling for war over their restricted role in the present dynamics. They don’t think about the people, just self.”

Other social media users called out what they viewed as manipulation and sabotage attempts. @Joguns argued, “#DangoteRefinery is a private biz. Just like private universities reserve the right to join ASUU strikes, @AlikoDangote should be allowed to run his business legally and for the benefit of Nigerians.”

Tzalmon was even more suspicious, suggesting that “these unions are solely focused on exploiting the people. I can’t help but question whether the @DangoteGroup truck accidents are orchestrated to sabotage the company.”

On Facebook, Gbenga Emmanuel opined that “this is the part where @DangoteGroup should motivate some private individuals to invest in filling stations that will be loyal to it across the country since @officialNUPENG9 and @PETROAN are moving crazy.”

The larger concern about foreign influence also surfaced in the debate.

Ebere Anosike observed that “it seems NLC & NUPENG are being used to sabotage Dangote Refinery and thus Nigeria’s economy to save Western refineries that are worrying about declining fuel imports. The more worrying aspect is NUPENG workers might not even know they’re being used by unseen hands controlling their top officials. A serious country would quickly investigate them for possible economic treason.”

On Instagram, Adesuyi bluntly remarked, “For years @officialNUPENG9 don show Nigerians sege. Now that there’s competition they can’t withstand it. Anyways Nigerians will stand with @DangoteGroup.”

Tech-driven voices on X also chimed in, with @NaijaLogistics saying, “Union should not hold the country to ransom. Dangote’s game is innovation—let’s embrace progress, not protest.”

As one LinkedIn user put it, “Disruptive? Yes. But anything revolutionary faces resistance. What Dangote is doing will be studied in business schools around the world.” Read More

The drama inside the Big Brother Naija Season 10 house intensified on Sunday night as three housemates — Doris, Ivatar, and Big Soso — were evicted, while Faith cemented his dominance by retaining the Head of House (HOH) title for the seventh week.

Faith once again proved his resilience, outshining fellow finalist Koyin in the final stage of a three-part HOH challenge that tested the patience and strategy of the 19 contestants.

His victory not only extended his reign as HOH but also gave him the power to select Joanna to share the exclusive HOH lounge with him. He will hold the role until Monday evening when the next round of competition begins.

Speaking after his win, Faith said he was “grateful for the consistency” and promised to keep “pushing harder every week until the finale.”

Big Soso became the eighth housemate to be evicted after the housemates failed to secure the immunity card hidden during a dramatic envelope search.

Ivatar soon followed as the ninth housemate to leave the “10/10” season.

Doris, who entered the house as a strong contender, was evicted as the tenth housemate, leaving fans shocked and social media buzzing.

FRSC to Launch Contactless Driver’s Licence Registration with 48-Hour Issuance Window

The FRSC will roll out contactless driver’s licence registration in September with a 48-hour issuance window, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed revealed

FRSC to Launch Contactless Driver’s Licence Registration with 48-Hour Issuance Window

By Lukman Omikunle

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to roll out a contactless driver’s licence registration system with a 48-hour issuance window, in what is set to be the most significant digital upgrade in the agency’s history.

Speaking in an interview with Premium Times, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed said the new system would be deployed nationwide starting September, with the aim of drastically reducing the months-long delays Nigerians currently face in obtaining driver’s licences.

“We are introducing contactless biometric technology that allows licences to be processed even without internet connectivity. Our target is to reduce the waiting period from three months to just 48 hours,” Mohammed disclosed.

Over the past year, Nigerians have expressed frustration at the backlog of pending licence applications, with many waiting several months after biometric capture. Mohammed acknowledged these challenges, attributing them largely to technical hitches faced by FRSC’s long-term private partners.

“We are not happy with the difficulty Nigerians face in getting their driver’s licences. This new technology, integrated with the National Identification Number (NIN), will solve these bottlenecks and ensure faster issuance,” he assured.

The FRSC boss highlighted other innovations under his leadership, including the FRSC mobile app, real-time monitoring through body cameras, and black-spot alerts for motorists. He noted that the contactless system is part of a broader agenda to make FRSC a fully digital, citizen-friendly agency.

“Our mobile app already helps motorists report misconduct, check licence validity, and receive live safety alerts. This contactless driver’s licence project is another step toward a smarter, technology-driven corps,” Mohammed said.

Mohammed also touched on other pressing issues, including the push for selected FRSC personnel to carry arms for security during patrols, stricter regulation of heavy-duty trucks, and enforcement of traffic rules by VIP convoys.

Despite challenges, he reaffirmed his commitment, “Our ultimate mandate is to reduce road crashes and fatalities. Enforcement, digital transformation, and collaboration with stakeholders remain our key strategies.”

According to Mohammed, the new system will begin its rollout this September and could take one to two months to achieve nationwide coverage. Once fully operational, Nigerians applying for a fresh licence or renewal can expect issuance within two days, provided they meet all requirements. Read More

Naira Hits Five-Month High at 1514.86/$ as Dollar Inflows Boost Market

The naira rose to a five-month high of 1514.86/$ at the official market, supported by $15m CBN intervention and fresh portfolio inflows. Analysts expect stability but warn of oil price risks

Naira Hits Five-Month High at 1514.86/$ as Dollar Inflows Boost Market

Abuja, Nigeria – September 8, 2025

The naira closed last week near a five-month high, trading at ₦1514.86/$ on the official window, according to Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) data.

The local currency opened September at ₦1526.09/$, before strengthening to ₦1514.86/$ on Thursday at the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM). The last time the naira traded below the ₦1515/$ threshold was on March 6, when it closed at ₦1512.30/$.

At the parallel market, the naira also firmed slightly, appreciating to ₦1538/$, representing a 0.02% gain.

The rally was supported by a $15 million CBN intervention alongside increased portfolio inflows, which improved dollar liquidity and pushed rates into the ₦1519–₦1523/$ range.

Analysts predict the naira could remain relatively stable across both official and parallel markets in the coming week, citing steady inflows and modest growth in external reserves. However, they warn that speculative demand and global oil price volatility may limit further gains.

The upcoming OPEC+ meeting is expected to play a key role in determining crude oil prices, which in turn could influence Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings and market stability. Read More

NDLEA Busts International Drug Cartel, Seizes N6.4bn Narcotics, Arrests Kingpins

NDLEA has busted an international drug cartel, arresting three kingpins and seizing narcotics worth N6.4bn in Lagos, Rivers, Abuja, Kogi, Niger, and Taraba

Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), NDLEA Chairman

NDLEA Busts International Drug Cartel, Seizes N6.4bn Narcotics, Arrests Kingpins

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a major international drug cartel spanning Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates, leading to the arrest of three cartel leaders and the seizure of narcotics valued at over N6.4 billion.

The breakthrough followed the interception of 76 cartons of textile materials at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on August 26. Hidden inside the fabrics were 17.9kg of cocaine laced with charms allegedly meant to evade detection. The drugs, worth 5.3 million Australian dollars (N5.3bn), were destined for Sydney, Australia.

The operation led to the arrest of freight agent Olashupo Michael Oladimeji, a syndicate member. Subsequent raids exposed two other kingpins: Muaezee Ademola Ogunbiyi, arrested in Ikeja on September 3, and Shola Adegoke, apprehended in Ikeja GRA. Recovered items included 21 parcels of Canadian Loud, a pump-action rifle with cartridges, and two luxury vehicles.

Authorities identified the cartel’s overall ringleader as Adebisi Ademola Omoyele, alias Mr. Bee, who is reportedly coordinating operations from Dubai.

Beyond Lagos, NDLEA operatives launched simultaneous nationwide crackdowns:
Rivers State: 160,200 bottles of codeine syrup worth N1.1bn hidden in ceramic sanitary wares.
Abuja: A 32-year-old dispatch rider caught with 3.1kg of Colorado.
Lagos: 625kg of cannabis seized; a couple arrested with 24.4kg of skunk in Ajegunle.
Kogi: 53.4kg of skunk intercepted in a vehicle.
Niger State: A Toyota Hilux transporting 342kg of cannabis seized.
Taraba: 7.5 hectares of cannabis farmland weighing 18,750kg destroyed, with two suspects arrested.

Additional arrests and seizures were recorded in Edo, Anambra, and Kaduna States.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), praised officers for their commitment and urged them to sustain the agency’s balanced approach of law enforcement and community engagement through the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative. Read More

Female Boxing Coach Reportedly on the Run Over Lesbianism Allegation in Abeokuta

Fresh details emerge as Civil Defence officer and former national boxing coach, Adeoti Mosunmola Yinka, is reported missing amid an investigation into a 2022 lesbianism allegation involving fellow ex-boxer, Shogbamu Bolanle Temitope, in Abeokuta, Ogun State

Female Boxing Coach Reportedly on the Run Over Lesbianism Allegation in Abeokuta

A new development has emerged in the 2022 incident involving Shogbamu Bolanle Temitope, a former Nigerian boxer, and her alleged same-sex partner, Adeoti Mosunmola Yinka, as reports indicate that both women are currently on the run.

Temitope, a mother of three, had narrowly escaped lynching in 2022 after an angry mob reportedly attacked her and Yinka at a hotel in Aseyori Estate, Sabo Agbo-Eran, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, over allegations of engaging in same-sex acts — an act that is not acceptable in Nigeria.

According to eyewitnesses, the duo were rescued by passers-by who intervened just in time to prevent the mob from carrying out jungle justice before they fled the scene. However, in the course of their escape, Yinka was reportedly involved in a ghastly motor accident, which left her with severe, life-threatening injuries.

Since then, Temitope’s whereabouts have remained unknown.

Further checks revealed that Alhaji Isiaq Kolawole, the Chairman of the Aseyori Estate, reported Temitope and Yinka for alleged lesbianism to the Anti-Cultism and Other Related Offences Department of the Nigerian Police, Ogun State Command.

In the police report seen by newsheadline247, “Alhaj Kolawole accused Bolanle Temitope Shogbamu as a notorious bisexual known for promoting, engaging and encouraging same sex act.”

However, the case resurfaced recently after reports emerged that some personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) — where Adeoti Mosunmola Yinka is employed — were allegedly involved in same-sex activities. The agency was said to have launched an internal investigation into Yinka and a few others linked to the scandal.

A source within the NSCDC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Yinka, alleged to be a bisexual woman, and several colleagues were under investigation for alleged same-sex misconduct, adding that she had not reported for duty in recent weeks.

“We have not seen Yinka around for weeks. I think she must have gone into hiding when she realized she’s being investigated on allegations of lesbianism,” the source said. “If confirmed, she could face dismissal and possible prosecution.”

Yinka, who was once a national female boxing coach and later served as an international and Olympic boxing official, is said to have enjoyed a long career in sports and public service before the allegations emerged.

The controversy has reportedly stirred mixed reactions within Nigeria’s boxing community and the Civil Defence Corps, with some members expressing concern about the incident.

Both Yinka and Temitope remain unreachable as of the time of filing this report, and the NSCDC has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

At press time, neither the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) nor the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has publicly confirmed disciplinary action against Adeoti Mosunmola Yinka.

Legal Explainer: Same-Sex Relations Under Nigerian Law

Nigeria’s Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act (SSMPA), enacted in 2014, criminalises same-sex marriages and public displays of same-sex relationships.
Under the law:

  • Persons who enter into a same-sex union may face up to 14 years in prison.
  • Individuals or groups who support, register, or participate in gay clubs, organisations, or meetings may face up to 10 years in prison. The Act applies across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, have repeatedly called for reforms to the SSMPA, arguing that it promotes discrimination. However, the Nigerian government has maintained that the law reflects the country’s cultural and moral values. Read More

Governor Adeleke Brokers Peace, Resolves PDP Rift in Ife Federal Constituency

Governor Ademola Adeleke has reconciled PDP leaders in Ife Federal Constituency, urging unity and warning against opposition-backed division ahead of the 2026 elections

Governor Adeleke Brokers Peace, Resolves PDP Rift in Ife Federal Constituency

Ile-Ife, Osun State – September 7, 2025

Governor Ademola Adeleke has resolved recent internal disagreements within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ife Federal Constituency, calling on stakeholders to guard against what he described as “agents of division engineered by the opposition.”

At a high-powered reconciliation meeting attended by key party leaders—including Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi, Deputy Senate Minority Leader Senator Lere Oyewumi, State Chairman Hon Sunday Bisi, Secretary to the State Government Hon Teslim Igbalaye, Chief of Staff Hon Kazeem Akinleye, Chairman of the Commissioners’ Forum Alhaji Ganiyu Olaoluwa, and other PDP stalwarts—the feud was declared resolved. A consensus was reached to forgive, forget, and unite ahead of next year’s elections.

Governor Adeleke commended the leaders for their openness, stressing that the disagreements were largely due to miscommunication and external attempts to destabilize the party.

“Throughout this meeting today, I see Ile Ife PDP very truly united. I listen to all the leaders here and I see clearly a communication gap among the leaders. There is also a strong sign of an outsider plot to divide Ife PDP,” Adeleke said.

“Now that we have seen the roots of the matter, I charge us to get back to work. Our administration has done so much for Ifeland and we are still going to do more. Ile Ife is a PDP territory. Go back and sustain the tempo. I commend the elders and leaders, the senatorial leader, the local party chairmen, the elected party chairmen, party chiefs and operatives. Go back and continue working for victory of the party.”

Earlier, PDP State Chairman Hon Sunday Bisi described the incident that led to a vote of no confidence as a “family affair,” noting that all parties had shown commitment to the unity of the party.

“We are glad that all issues have been ironed out. It is the resolution of this meeting that all statutory meetings for party mobilisation should reconvene and all party members and leaders should decisively frown at any act capable of misinterpretation as anti-party activity,” Bisi stated. PM News Apologises to Gbenga Daniel Over False APC Suspension Story

Lagos, Nigeria – September 7, 2025

PM News has issued a formal public apology to former Ogun State governor and serving senator, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, over what it described as a false and misleading publication about his alleged suspension from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a letter dated September 3, 2025, and addressed to Daniel through his legal counsel, Prof. Yemi Oke, SAN, the media house admitted that its August 24, 2025, online report titled “Why APC suspended Gbenga Daniel” was baseless and untrue.

According to the management, a thorough review revealed that the reasons earlier advanced for Daniel’s alleged suspension from the ruling party were unfounded. The organisation confirmed that the story had since been pulled down from its platform.

“We can assure you that no malice was intended,” the letter signed by the PM News Editor on behalf of the management read in part. “We regret any embarrassment the said publication may have caused you and do tender our unreserved apology.”

PM News further clarified that the controversial story was published in error and reaffirmed its commitment to ethical and responsible journalism.

The apology comes at a time when media credibility and accountability in Nigeria are under intense scrutiny, especially in political reporting, where misinformation can tarnish reputations and fuel needless controversy.

Daniel, who governed Ogun State between 2003 and 2011, remains one of the most influential voices in the South-West APC bloc and a respected figure in Nigerian politics. Read More

Ogun APC Crisis: Gov. Abiodun Battles Senator Yayi in Fierce Power Struggle Ahead of 2027

0

Governor Dapo Abiodun is accused of sidelining Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) in Ogun APC, from blocking media coverage to restricting festival honours, as both camps gear up for a 2027 political showdown

Ogun APC Crisis: Gov. Abiodun Battles Senator Yayi in Fierce Power Struggle Ahead of 2027

The political landscape in Ogun State has taken a dramatic turn as Governor Dapo Abiodun intensifies moves to curtail the rising influence of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi.

Reliable sources disclosed that Governor Abiodun allegedly ordered members of the ruling Party executive committee to boycott Yayi’s recent birthday celebration, a directive that underscores the growing rift within the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite the order, some defiant party excos reportedly attended the event, further deepening tensions in the ruling party.

Observers believe the governor’s actions form part of a wider strategy to enforce loyalty. Reports indicate that several APC officials were recently compelled to swear an oath of allegiance to the governor.

Adding to the controversy, Governor Abiodun allegedly directed the state-owned broadcaster, Ogun State Television (OGTV), not to cover Yayi’s birthday festivities. However, facing backlash and embarrassment, the station later contacted the organisers just a day before the celebration, offering coverage only on a paid airtime basis.

This is not the first time the governor has been accused of undermining the senator’s political momentum. Earlier this year, when Yayi was set to be honoured as Chairman of the 2025 Ojude Oba Festival, Governor Abiodun allegedly phoned the senator, citing “intelligence reports” that his attendance could spark unrest, and advised him to turn back if already en route.

Similarly, at the 2025 Lisabi Festival, Yayi’s supporters were reportedly warned not to attend the main celebration. In defiance, the senator’s loyalists staged a parallel gathering at a private event centre near the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), signalling that his political machinery remains intact despite resistance.

Political watchers say these recurring face-offs reflect a silent war over the control of Ogun APC’s structure ahead of the 2027 elections, with Yayi emerging as a formidable force whose popularity is unsettling the governor’s camp.

“As the supremacy battle between both camps intensifies, the fate of Ogun APC hangs in the balance,” one analyst remarked, warning that the party could be heading toward a major internal showdown. Read More
