2027: SDP’s Adebayo Urges Nigerians to Reject Party-Hopping Politicians Without Fresh Ideas

Former SDP presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has urged Nigerians to reject recycled politicians and embrace new leaders with fresh ideas as the 2027 elections draw near

2027: SDP’s Adebayo Urges Nigerians to Reject Party-Hopping Politicians Without Fresh Ideas

As the race for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential elections begins to gather steam, Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 polls, has cautioned Nigerians against embracing recycled politicians who switch parties without changing their political philosophy.

Speaking to journalists, Adebayo stressed that only fresh leaders with new ideas can deliver the change Nigerians have long desired. He argued that entrenched political habits—such as feudalistic governance, lack of accountability, and the monetization of politics—have continued to undermine Nigeria’s democracy regardless of the ruling party.

“Changing your political party without changing your tendency is just a mere nomenclature,” Adebayo said. “If you carry that mentality wherever you go, it will pollute that place. What Nigerians need are new politicians with new ideas, not the same old faces changing party names.”

Adebayo criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for flouting electoral laws on early campaigning, accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of setting a bad precedent. He noted that opposition parties are forced into a campaign mode because the ruling party has continued to mount billboards and engage in political rallies long before the timeline permitted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

On the state of opposition politics, Adebayo dismissed the relevance of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its coalition, stating that the SDP had earlier rejected overtures from the group because they failed to provide answers to fundamental political and ideological questions. “What is wrong with Nigerian politics is not the acronym of a party but the philosophy that guides it,” he said.

Addressing reports of division within the SDP, Adebayo insisted that the party remains united and guided by law and order. He explained that disciplinary actions, such as the suspension of National Secretary Olu Agunloye by the National Working Committee, were a sign of the party’s strong internal structures rather than factionalization.

He also touched on the controversy surrounding former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, who has reportedly urged voters to support SDP candidates despite questions about his membership. Adebayo clarified that party records do not list El-Rufai as a member but emphasized that “anyone who says vote for the SDP is my friend, whether they are in the party or not.”

On the economy, Adebayo questioned the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) commendation of President Tinubu’s economic stabilization efforts, arguing that such assessments do not reflect the harsh realities Nigerians face. “If you are earning a million naira and can barely afford basic needs, then whatever WTO is saying doesn’t make sense,” he said.

Adebayo urged Nigerians to prioritize character and ideas when choosing leaders in 2027, insisting that the solution to the nation’s challenges lies in new leadership. “Let no one say that the good ones are not coming out or that the beautiful ones are not yet born. Now is the time for a new direction. We must bid farewell to poverty and insecurity,” he declared. Read More

EFCC has arrested Ahamba Tochukwu, CEO of Gavice Logistics Limited, for allegedly defrauding 400 investors of ₦2bn through a Ponzi-style logistics investment scheme

EFCC Arrests Gavice Logistics CEO for Alleged ₦2bn Ponzi Fraud

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested Ahamba Tochukwu, Chief Executive Officer of Gavice Logistics Limited, for allegedly masterminding a fraudulent investment scheme that defrauded investors of over ₦2 billion.

According to the EFCC, Tochukwu lured unsuspecting Nigerians into bogus haulage, courier, and e-commerce investment plans with promises of a 50 percent Return on Investment (ROI).

Investigations revealed that he raised more than ₦2 billion from at least 400 investors. However, since November 2024, investors were unable to access either their capital or returns after Tochukwu reportedly disappeared with the funds.

EFCC operatives eventually tracked him down, and he is currently being interrogated over what has been described as a “fraudulent Ponzi scheme.”

“With his arrest, members of the public are advised to desist from patronising unverified pyramid schemes and fraudulent investment promoters to avoid being defrauded,” the Commission cautioned in its statement.

The case underscores EFCC’s intensified crackdown on Ponzi-style investment schemes that have swindled Nigerians out of billions in recent years. Read More

FRSC Pushes to Arm Officials After 240 Deaths on Duty

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, says the agency is pushing to arm its officials following the rising number of casualties during operations on Nigerian roads.

Mohammed who revealed this in recent interview with PREMIUM TIMES, noted that a bill currently before the National Assembly seeks to amend the Federal Road Safety Commission Act of 2007 to empower its officers to bear arms.

The bill, sponsored by Abiodun Adesida (APC, Ondo) and Olaide Muhammad (APC, Oyo), has already passed second reading in the House of Representatives.

While critics argue that FRSC should instead partner with other armed agencies such as the police, Mohammed insists that arming some operatives has become a matter of necessity.

“As of last year, I think there were about 200 deaths – personnel who were knocked down, and over 240 from inception. And many were mayhem, while the perpetrators escaped,” he said, stressing that no motorists involved in such incidents have been apprehended.

He explained that the corps plans to arm only a special detachment of officials who would be deployed to intervene when patrol teams face danger.

“It’s only a detachment, a squad, well-trained squad, that can hold an arm and be intervening in case there are issues on the road for us to be able to… In fact, if you recollect, some years back, we even had the armoury, we did the training, most of our staff did the training in Jaji. I did my own in Keffi. Some did in Lagos, some did in Jos, and Enugu. And then they even bought the arms, and then we built an armoury in Gwagwalada. We also employed the service of a retired army colonel,” he said.

The Corps Marshal added that the controlled use of firearms would serve as both a defensive and psychological deterrent.

“Because how can a FRSC marshal stop an articulated vehicle, a tanker, a trailer, especially the ones that are doing mixed loading? You see trucks that have animals, and then maybe even 100 passengers on top. How do you stop those without being armed? … You don’t just give anybody an arm to be on the road. And that’s why I think the public is really not comfortable with FRSC having to hold arms. So we’re also careful, and that’s why I say it’s not everyone who’s going to hold an arm,” he said.

Mohammed also acknowledged public concerns about the potential misuse of firearms but insisted that adequate training and workshops are being held to ensure professionalism and civility among operatives.

On the legislative process, he explained, “As it is today, it has passed all the processes. The House of Representatives has already approved the bill. Now they are taking it to the Senate for concurrence. And that is what we are waiting for.”

The Corps Marshal further called for improvements in officers’ welfare to boost morale and secure equal service opportunities.

“Another thing that one can do to make your staff work for you is to do welfare. Part of that welfare is that if you retire as an assistant corps marshal (ACM), deputy corps marshal (DCM), you should be able to continue to enjoy your salary for life, like police DIGs, AIGs. Now it has been extended to civil defence, immigration. So, we shouldn’t be an exception,” he added. Read More

Customs Intercepts Rifles, Ammunition, Drones Worth ₦377m in Ogun, Ondo

Nigeria Customs intercepted rifles, 4,891 rounds of ammunition, and drones worth ₦377m in Ogun and Ondo, reinforcing its fight against smuggling

Customs Intercepts Rifles, Ammunition, Drones Worth ₦377m in Ogun, Ondo

Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, have intercepted a large cache of firearms, ammunition, and industrial drones in separate anti-smuggling operations across Ogun and Ondo States.

Announcing the breakthrough on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu said the seizures were based on credible intelligence and swift tactical response by patrol teams.

According to him, officers on night patrol intercepted a Nissan Almera along the Ilara bush paths in Ogun State at about 14:13 hours on Thursday, August 7, 2025. The suspects fled on sighting Customs operatives, abandoning the vehicle.

“A search of the vehicle revealed 15 assorted rifles, including 14 JOJEF Magnum semi-automatic firearms from Italy and one Mossberg pump-action shotgun from the USA, alongside 4,891 rounds of ammunition. The weapons were carefully concealed within second-hand clothing and cartons of spaghetti,” Shuaibu disclosed.

In a related operation two days later, another patrol team stopped a Volkswagen Sprinter bus along the Akure–Ore axis in Ondo State at about 9:10 hours on Friday, August 9, 2025. On inspection, officers discovered two industrial drones hidden in a wooden box without valid documents.

Shuaibu revealed that the seized items — including rifles, ammunition, drones, clothing, and food products — had a Duty-Paid Value (DPV) of ₦377,110,800.00. One suspect was arrested during the operations.

“These seizures underscore the Service’s unwavering commitment to national security under the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi. Importation of arms, ammunition, or drones of this nature requires valid approval, permits, and an End User Certificate from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). Any deviation will be treated as a deliberate attempt to undermine national security,” he stated.

He praised the bravery and professionalism of the officers involved.
“These interceptions are impossible without serious planning, intelligence gathering, and tactical execution. The Unit remains resolute and vigilant in its mission to suppress smuggling to the barest minimum,” Shuaibu added.

The seized arms and ammunition were handed over to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) for further investigation.

Speaking on behalf of the NCCSALW Director-General, CP Alamutua Abiodun (rtd), the Southwest Zonal Director commended Customs for what he described as a landmark interception.
“This interception is proof of our collective determination to frustrate the efforts of those seeking to destabilise the country,” he said.

Shuaibu also appealed for public vigilance, urging Nigerians to report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies. Read More

US Embassy Confirms Visa Revocations for Nigerians Under Trump’s Security Policy

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has responded to mounting concerns over reports that valid visas belonging to some Nigerians are being quietly revoked without explanation or appeal.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos, the embassy clarified that the cancellations are part of President Donald Trump’s security measures, stressing that the increased vetting applies to all of the more than 55 million foreigners holding valid US visas, not just Nigerians.

Responding to an enquiry, the embassy said visas were being cancelled in situations where a foreign visitor — including students — overstays their lawful period of admission, engages in criminal activity, or provides material support to a terrorist organisation.

“The Trump Administration is protecting our nation and our citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through our visa process,” the embassy said.
“Prohibiting entry to the United States by those who might pose a threat to US national security or public safety is key to protecting US citizens at home. Every prospective traveler to the United States undergoes interagency security vetting.”

The clarification follows alarm raised last week by Olufemi Soneye, former spokesman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), who described the trend as “unsettling.”

Soneye noted that dozens of Nigerians, including professionals and entrepreneurs, had received letters directing them to submit their passports at consulates in Lagos or Abuja, only to have their visas cancelled without explanation.

“What makes this development even more alarming is the veil of silence surrounding it,” he wrote. “The notices cite Title 22, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 41.122 as the legal basis, vaguely stating that ‘new information became available after the visa was issued.’ Beyond that, nothing is explained. No evidence is shared. No avenue for appeal is offered.”

He added that some Nigerians only discovered their visas had been revoked at airports, with a few briefly detained by immigration authorities before being sent home.

The embassy, however, emphasized that the revocations are in line with long-existing laws under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), noting that Section 221(i) gives the Secretary of State and consular officers discretion to revoke visas at any time if there is a suspicion of ineligibility.

“While we have had this revocation authority for decades, we are using all the information we have to do this on a scale never seen before, in order to keep American borders secure and American communities safe,” the embassy added.

Hadi Sirika Denies Joining Opposition Coalition Against Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election

Former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has dismissed reports linking him to an opposition coalition formed to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Wednesday, Sirika described the claims as false and misleading.

“No I am not,” he said in reaction to reports suggesting he was aligning with forces opposed to the president.

The former minister, who served two terms under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, confirmed he visited the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday where he met with presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

“Yesterday, I was with Chief Bayo Onanuga in the presidential villa and he said I was in the coalition. I told him I was not and never will be. He said he got that from the reports. People can join coalition, it is democracy,” Sirika stated.

In July, the opposition coalition, championed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, announced the adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform for the 2027 general elections.

The coalition has pledged to deliver “competent, capable, and compassionate leadership” aimed at prioritising the welfare of Nigerians. Read More

Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) has denied ownership of the truck involved in the recent accident in Enugu State, clarifying that the vehicle does not belong to the Dangote Group

Moving forward, increased scrutiny will be applied to the unauthorised use of our brand identity, particularly the misuse of our logo on vehicles not affiliated with the Group,” the company stated.

The Group said while it normally refrains from commenting on individual incidents, it was compelled to respond due to the growing spread of misinformation falsely linking the accident to its operations.
