Nigerian chef and former Guinness World Record (GWR) holder, Hilda Baci, is set to embark on another ambitious culinary challenge — this time, to cook the biggest pot of jollof rice in history.

Hilda Baci to Cook 250 Bags of Rice in Giant 22,619-Litre Pot for New Jollof World Record

In a video shared on her Instagram page on Monday, Hilda announced plans to cook 250 bags of basmati rice using a giant pot with a 22,619-litre capacity.

Breaking down the logistics, she explained, “I’m making the executive decision to cook 250 bags of basmati rice. The pot is 6 meters wide by 6 meters wide, 1.1 meters tall, and about 1.3 meters deep. I’m sure the pot is not going to sink.”

The event, scheduled for September 12, 2025, is expected to feed at least 10,000 people, marking another milestone in her record-breaking journey.

Hilda, who became a household name in 2023 after cooking continuously for 93 hours and 11 minutes to break the world record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual, is now set to make history again with what is being billed as the largest jollof pot ever cooked. Read More

IPOB Disowns Simon Ekpa After Finnish Terrorism Conviction, Warns Against “Judicial Hostage-Taking” in Kanu’s Trial

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has firmly distanced itself from Finland-based agitator Simon Ekpa following his sentencing to six years in prison for terrorism-related offences.

In a statement released Monday by its Media and Publicity Secretary, IPOB stressed that Ekpa has never been part of the organisation or its security wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

“The record is clear. IPOB, under oath in a Finnish court, testified that Simon Ekpa has never held any position in IPOB or ESN. Ekpa himself admitted under oath that he is merely a content creator and even disowned IPOB,” the group stated.

The pro-Biafra movement reiterated its non-violent stance, condemning all acts of terrorism or armed struggle carried out in its name. It also expressed concern that Ekpa’s conviction is being misrepresented to undermine ongoing legal efforts to free its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

According to IPOB, the Nigerian government is using Ekpa’s case as a smokescreen to delay judgment on Kanu’s no-case submission, now adjourned to October 10, 2025.

“This is not justice; it is judicial hostage-taking — a weaponisation of the courts to sustain persecution,” IPOB declared.

The group further alleged that Ekpa had set up and operated his own unauthorised entities, including the so-called “Biafra Government in Exile,” “Biafra Liberation Army (BLA),” and “Biafra Defence Force (BDF),” all of which IPOB has consistently denounced.

Calling on the international community to intervene, IPOB urged the European Union, Finland, the United States, and the United Kingdom to ensure that Kanu’s trial is not tainted by false associations with Ekpa.

“The Finnish court exonerated IPOB from any link with Ekpa. We urge Finland to issue a clear statement to stop this malicious misrepresentation,” it added. Read More

Shocking Admission: Ogun APC Spokesman Confesses He Needs Party Leaders’ Clearance to Speak on OGD’s Performance at NASS

APC Ogun spokesman Femi Nuberu admits he can’t speak on Senator Gbenga Daniel without “employers’ clearance,” fueling outrage

Shocking Admission: Ogun APC Spokesman Confesses He Needs Party Leaders’ Clearance to Speak on OGD’s Performance at NASS

The Ogun State spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Femi Nuberu, has come under heavy criticism after openly admitting on live radio that he cannot speak freely without authorization from his political “employers.”

Nuberu, who appeared on Eagles FM on Monday amid controversy over the alleged suspension of former Governor and current senator, Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD), stunned listeners with his candid confession that his voice is controlled by party leadership.

Senator Gbenga Daniel

Pressed by anchor Kunle Balogun to assess Senator Daniel’s performance at the National Assembly, Nuberu sidestepped the question and replied bluntly, saying, “Do you know that discussing what the leadership has not sent me to discuss could even amount to anti-party? Or will you be the one to pay my salary if they sack me?”

The remark has been widely interpreted as confirmation that APC officials in Ogun operate under a gag order, with loyalty tied strictly to Governor Dapo Abiodun’s camp.

Governor Dapo Abiodun

Observers noted the irony when Nuberu, moments later, fiercely defended Governor Abiodun after a caller accused him of neglecting Ijebu communities. Unlike his refusal to speak on Daniel, he swiftly rose to the governor’s defence—drawing accusations of selective loyalty.

The inconsistency prompted the show’s host to rebuke Nuberu on air, questioning why he needed clearance to evaluate OGD but had no hesitation defending the governor.

Political analysts say the incident further highlights the growing cracks within the Ogun APC, where internal control, loyalty battles, and political vendettas continue to undermine unity. Read More

Lagos Police Restrict Egungun Festival to Approved Venues, Ban Street Processions

The Lagos State Police Command has imposed strict restrictions on activities linked to the ongoing Egungun masquerade festival, limiting celebrations to approved outing points and designated venues across the state.

According to the directive, masqueraders and their followers are prohibited from staging public processions or street marches. The move, police say, is aimed at safeguarding lives and property, while also protecting the rights of residents of other faiths.

Police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed the measure in a statement on Sunday, noting that recent violent clashes between rival masquerade groups had led to destruction of both public and private property.

“Egungun masquerades, practitioners, and supporters are to strictly abide by these restrictions. They are also required to notify the Commissioner of Police and apply for security ahead of any outing,” the statement read.

The Command warned it would enforce the law against any masquerade group or adherent found disturbing public peace, violating human rights, or causing disorder during the festival period.

While appealing for compliance, Hundeyin urged cooperation from practitioners to avoid escalation of violence.

“The Lagos State Police Command therefore implores all Egungun masquerades, adherents, and supporters to cooperate with the police during this festival period, ensure compliance with the laws of the land, so as to sustain peace, law, and order in Lagos State,” he said.

However, observers believe that the decision reflects growing security concerns in Lagos, where traditional festivities have at times spiraled into violence, raising tensions in densely populated communities. Read More

Union Bank Seals Merger With Titan Trust Bank

Union Bank of Nigeria Plc has officially completed its long-awaited merger with Titan Trust Bank Limited, following final approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The consolidation marks a major milestone in the Nigerian banking sector and sets Union Bank on course to compete more aggressively across retail, SME, and corporate segments.

The transaction, which began in 2021 with the signing of a Share Sale Agreement, has now been fully executed. Under the arrangement, Union Bank has absorbed all of Titan Trust Bank’s assets and operations, while Titan Trust ceases to exist as a standalone entity.

With a combined network of 293 service centres and 937 ATMs nationwide, complemented by advanced digital platforms, Union Bank is reinforcing its position as one of Nigeria’s most formidable financial institutions.

Describing the development as transformational, Union Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Yetunde Oni, said:

“This is a pivotal moment in our 108-year journey, and a launchpad for delivering greater value to our customers. By blending stability with innovation, we are better positioned to meet the evolving needs of Nigerians and to be their most trusted financial partner.”

The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Bayo Adeleke, echoed this optimism, stressing the broader vision of the consolidation.

“This is a new era of growth, collaboration, and shared prosperity. By bringing together the strengths of both institutions, we are committed to creating lasting value for our customers, shareholders, and communities while advancing Nigeria’s financial inclusion agenda.”

Union Bank assured its customers that all account details remain unchanged, with uninterrupted access to its full suite of products and services. The bank also pledged to fast-track the rollout of innovative digital solutions for a seamless and modern banking experience.

Industry analysts say the merger is a strategic move that will not only strengthen Union Bank’s market position but also unlock operational synergies, reinforcing its ambition to drive inclusive banking to millions of Nigerians. Read More

Finland Court Jails Pro-Biafra Agitator Simon Ekpa for Terrorism, Tax Fraud

A Finnish court has dealt a heavy blow to pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa, sentencing him to six years in prison after finding him guilty of terrorism offences and aggravated tax fraud.

The Päijät-Häme District Court concluded that Ekpa’s online rants were not just empty words but direct incitements to bloodshed. Between August 2021 and November 2024, the activist, operating from his base in Lahti, Finland, allegedly weaponised his social media platforms to orchestrate chaos in Nigeria’s volatile south-east.

Prosecutors painted a damning picture: Ekpa was not only posting directives on X (formerly Twitter) that encouraged attacks but was also “actively promoting and facilitating terrorism” by helping to arrange weapons, explosives, and ammunition for separatist militias.

By trying him under Finnish law, the court underscored that geography is no shield for extremism. Ekpa’s physical distance from Nigeria did not absolve him of responsibility for the violence his words and actions fuelled.

The conviction extends beyond terrorism. The court also found Ekpa guilty of aggravated tax fraud, revealing a double life where calls for “freedom” were accompanied by financial misconduct.

Still, the saga is not over. Ekpa retains the right to appeal the ruling before a higher court — a move that could prolong the legal battle but may do little to erase the damning evidence laid out against him. Read More

The Role Of Nigerian Citizens In Nation-Building | By Owolabi Aleshinloye

The Role Of Nigerian Citizens In Nation-Building | By Owolabi Aleshinloye

Discussions about Nigeria’s challenges almost always circle back to leadership. Many argue that poor governance, corruption, and failed promises are the country’s greatest obstacles. While leadership indeed plays a critical role, the reality is that no nation can thrive without the active involvement of its citizens. Nation-building is not a one-sided affair; it is a partnership between leaders and followers. Without responsible citizens, even the best policies and reforms will struggle to achieve results.

Being a Nigerian citizen goes far beyond holding a green passport or celebrating Independence Day. It is about playing an active role in shaping the country’s future. Every action, obeying traffic rules, paying taxes, rejecting corruption, or voting responsibly, contributes to the bigger picture of national progress.

One of the most important duties of good citizens is respect for law and order. In a country where bribery, tax evasion, and disregard for rules are common, choosing integrity is a powerful act of patriotism. Citizens who resist electoral malpractice, shun shortcuts, and demand accountability help strengthen democracy far more than complaints on social media ever could.

Equally important is the need for unity in diversity. With over 250 ethnic groups and multiple religions, Nigeria is one of the most diverse nations in the world. Unfortunately, this diversity has often been exploited as a tool for division. Good citizens counter this by embracing tolerance, promoting dialogue, and rejecting hate speech. National development is impossible in an atmosphere of constant ethnic and religious tension.

Community service also plays a major role in nation-building. Citizens who engage in environmental sanitation, contribute to local development projects, or volunteer in health and education initiatives make tangible contributions to the nation’s growth. Education, in particular, is a critical area where responsible citizens can leave a lasting impact, whether by supporting literacy campaigns, encouraging skill acquisition, or mentoring young people.

In today’s economy, innovation and entrepreneurship are equally vital. Across the country, Nigerians are already showing that progress is not the sole responsibility of government. From technology startups in Lagos to agricultural ventures in Oyo, Ogun and Northern part of the country, from the fashion industries in Aba to the oil business in the South-South, and from the entertainment industry to sports, ordinary citizens are creating jobs, driving economic growth, and proving that nation-building can happen from the ground up.

Finally, Nigerians have a duty to protect Nigeria’s image at home and abroad. Every Nigerian student who excels in academics overseas, every entrepreneur who builds a global brand, and every sportsman or entertainer who carries the national flag with pride contributes to strengthening Nigeria’s reputation on the world stage.

Nation-building is not a responsibility that can be left to government officials alone. It is a collective project that requires the active participation of every citizen. If Nigerians are truly committed to fighting corruption, reducing insecurity, and fostering development, then citizenship must be redefined as responsibility, not just identity.

A nation is only as strong as its people. If Nigeria is to reach its full potential, its citizens must rise to the challenge of patriotism, discipline, and unity. Leadership may set the tone, but it is the everyday actions of ordinary Nigerians that will ultimately determine the country’s destiny. Read More

Two Years On: How Senator Gbenga Daniel is Redefining Representation in the 10th Senate

In just two years at the Nigerian Senate, Senator Gbenga Daniel of Ogun East has combined legislative productivity with grassroots development, earning recognition as one of the chamber’s most impactful voices

Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD)

Two Years On: How Senator Gbenga Daniel is Redefining Representation in the 10th Senate

In the often slow-moving corridors of the Nigerian Senate—where debates frequently outweigh delivery—two years can feel like a political lifetime. For many lawmakers, the first half of their tenure is marked by routine presence and modest impact.

For Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, however, the story is strikingly different. Representing Ogun East in the 10th Senate, Daniel has approached his legislative mandate with vigor, vision, and verifiable results.

An engineer by training, seasoned administrator, and former two-term governor, Daniel has not carried himself as a “first-timer.” Instead, he has drawn on his wealth of executive experience to craft a legislative style rooted in productivity and practical impact.

Observers note that his approach is less about chasing headlines and more about building legacies. In just two years, he has balanced the rigors of lawmaking with the realities of grassroots empowerment—making him one of the Senate’s most respected and impactful voices.

Crucially, his efforts have translated into tangible dividends for his constituency. Daniel has not only amplified Ogun East’s share of the national commonwealth but has also accelerated development across its communities, ensuring that representation in Abuja brings real benefits back home.

As he reaches the midpoint of his first term in the Senate, Daniel’s performance underscores what is possible when legislative duty is paired with executive experience and a people-centered vision.

It is not difficult to notice that the hard-working Senator increased the fair share of the National Commonwealth and accelerated the development of the various communities in the Ogun East Senatorial District.

Legislative and Policy Influence

Senator Gbenga Daniel

Far from being content with mere attendance, Senator Daniel has actively sponsored and supported bills aimed at strengthening national development. His interventions often reflect his professional background in engineering and governance, emphasising sustainable infrastructure, education, and youth empowerment. Colleagues describe his contributions during debates as “practical, solution-driven, and visionary.”

For a first timer to have to his name, 16 sponsored Bills and 2 motions raised on the floor of the Senate is a signature of someone who came very prepared.

The Bill for the establishment of a Federal College of Aviation Technology in Ilara Remo, which has passed third readings and a public hearing with a strategic focus on employment generation, capacity building for youth in the aviation sector, economic development of the host communities, amongst others.

A great example of Senator Daniel’s laudable achievement is the South West Development Commission (SWDC) Bill, which, despite the number of discouragements he faced, was assented to by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and a Board has been constituted for the Commission, and members have been screened. The SWDC is a shortcut to regional economic and development initiative and building blocs to complement the existing tiers of government towards providing infrastructures for States, towns and communities in the region, indeed, the South West is blessed to have such a Senator like Otunba Gbenga Daniel at these trying times.

Constituency Development

Beyond the walls of the Senate, Daniel’s scorecard shines brightest in Ogun East. From infrastructural projects to empowerment programs, his approach has been to complement federal lawmaking with tangible dividends for his people. Constituents point to skill acquisition initiatives, youth and women empowerment schemes, and targeted infrastructural interventions as evidence of his commitment.

The Bill for the creation of a new State of the old Ijebu Province out of Ogun State already had its public hearing done with his great influence and capacity to rally support from stakeholders, including traditional rulers, market women, youths and the various communities situated in the proposed state.
one can imagine the enormous political and economic benefits for the people of Remoland and Ijebu land, as it will expand the frontiers of economic development and opportunities for Ogun East Senatorial District.

Raising the Bar of Representation

Political analysts note that Daniel’s tenure has elevated expectations of what senatorial representation should look like. For Ogun East, the Senate seat is no longer just a title but a platform for progressive governance. His blend of legislative activity and people-centred projects has set a new benchmark that rivals within and outside his constituency may find difficult to match.

Community Social Responsibilities

With Gateway Front Foundation (GFF) as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) Senator Gbenga Daniel touched lives with Interest-Free loans to over 1,200 beneficiaries of the GFF Microcredit schemes, over 4,000 beneficiaries of free Medical outreaches/ Eye Care programs, Free Monthly Special care (Cataract and Glaucoma) surgeries of over 1,000 people at the Eye Foundation in Ijebu Imushin and Sagamu, absolutely free, including cost of medications and transportation to beneficiaries.

Empowerment

Over 2,430 Beneficiaries in the Ogun East Senatorial Empowerment training programs with financial support and start-up kits. They had specific training in Farming and Aquaculture, and distribution of Fish Kiln/charcoal oven to trainees.

Fashion Designing and distribution of sewing machines, cosmetology with distribution of Make-up kits, Irrigation farming/distribution of irrigation pumping machines, not forgetting, ICT Training for Teachers and distribution of laptops, to meet the digital and technological standards that world demands.

A Statesman’s Pace

Two years into his mandate, Senator Gbenga Daniel has established himself not merely as a lawmaker but as a bridge between policy and people. With the foresight of a builder, the discipline of an engineer, and the compassion of a grassroots leader, he continues to stride confidently, raising the standard of representation.
This assertion brought to memory when Senator Daniel called the attention of the National Emergency Agency (NEMA) to the plights of Ogun Water side people, the need for urgent intervention arising from the devastating floods which affected people in Ijebu Waterside, but other locations in Ogun East Senatorial District.
As a result of which NEMA officials came on a prompt inspection visit to assess the damages and also sent some palliatives to mitigate the loss pending a final solution.

As the 10th Senate moves into the second half of its life, the people of Ogun East appear to have more than just a senator—they have a workhorse committed to reshaping their fortunes and contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s future.

A Call for Continuity

Senator Daniel

Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s two years in the 10th Senate have underscored his rare blend of vision, competence, and compassion. He has proven that representation is not about occupying a seat, but about using it as a lever for transformation. His scorecard speaks for itself—progressive laws, impactful projects, and a renewed sense of purpose for Ogun East.

As Nigeria’s democracy matures, consistency of capable leadership becomes vital. For Ogun East, Daniel embodies that steadiness—an experienced hand who understands governance, a pragmatic builder who delivers, and a statesman whose politics is anchored on service.

The journey is only halfway. To consolidate these gains, complete ongoing initiatives, and deepen his legacy, the people of Ogun East must rally behind Senator Gbenga Daniel, ensuring he not only finishes this tenure strongly but also returns in 2027 to continue charting a course of sustainable development and effective representation. Leading Cement manufacturer, Dangote Cement Plc has donated Pick-Up vans to the traffic management agencies in Lagos and Ogun States in demonstration of its commitment to public safety, infrastructure support, and national development.

Handing over the keys to the leaderships of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) at a brief ceremony held at the Project office of the Dangote Group in Ikeja, the Dangote Cement’s Head, Social Performance, Mr. Wakeel Olayiwola expressed the Company’s management desire to contribute to the efforts being made by state governments to ease movement of people, good and services and reduce manhours wasted in vehicular traffic.

“As a leading player in our nation’s industrial landscape, Dangote Cement Plc understands that our operations go beyond business. We are part of the communities we serve, and we recognize the critical role that efficient traffic management plays in ensuring the safety of lives, the smooth flow of goods, and the overall well-being of our cities.”, he stated.

According to him, the gesture is not just a contribution, it is a partnership. A partnership built on shared values of safety, efficiency, and service to the Nigerian people, noting that the vehicles would support the agencies’ efforts at enhancing rapid response to traffic incidents, improving patrol coverage across key transport corridors and strengthening enforcement of traffic regulations for safer roads.

He pointed out that it is the belief of the Dangote Cement management that when the public and private sectors collaborate meaningfully, the results would be transformative adding that “the donation is a testament to its belief in shared responsibility—where corporate entities like ours actively support the institutions that keep our society functioning.”

“We commend the traffic management Agencies for your tireless work in managing the complexities of urban mobility. Your dedication inspires us, and we are proud to stand with you. As we hand over these vehicles, we reaffirm our commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen. We will continue to explore ways to support traffic safety, driver education, and infrastructure development across Nigeria.

Receiving the keys of the vehicles one after the other, both the Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Ministry of Transport who led the team of TRACE, Mrs. Aderonke Tokunbo-Peters and the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki thanked Dangote Cement Plc for the good gesture and promised good use of the vehicles for the betterment of the society.

Mrs. Tokunbo-Peters described the donation as one of the moments “that stand motivating in the collective journey towards safer, more efficient, and more responsive traffic management in our cities. This donation is not just a gift of vehicles; it is a powerful statement of corporate responsibility, community partnership, and shared vision for public safety and service excellence.

“We are immensely grateful to Dangote Cement which we are proud to host in our state of Ogun, for recognizing the critical role our agency plays in maintaining order on our roads and for choosing to invest in our capacity to serve. These vehicles will enhance our mobility, improve our response times, and strengthen our presence across key traffic corridors.”

In his own remark, the General Manager of LASTMA, Bakare-Oki said the donation was a statement to what can be achieved when the private and public sectors work hand in hand.

“It reflects a deep understanding that traffic management is not just a government responsibility — it is a shared civic duty that affects every commuter, every business, and every family.

“As we receive this vehicle today, we reaffirm our commitment to using it judiciously, maintaining it diligently, and deploying it strategically to improve traffic flow, reduce accidents, and ensure the safety of all road users.”

He also parted his men and officers on the back saying; “Let me also take this moment to thank our dedicated officers and staff whose tireless efforts make our roads safer every day. With the new resources, their work will be even more impactful.

“To Dangote Cement, we say thank you — not just for the vehicles, but for believing in our mission. We look forward to deepening this partnership and exploring more ways to collaborate for the greater good. Together, let us continue to drive progress towards a safer, smarter and more connected city.” Read More

APC Stuns PDP, Wins 20 of 23 LGAs in Rivers Council Elections

Governor Fubara loses his Opobo-Nkoro LGA to APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in 20 out of the 23 local government areas in the just-concluded Chairmanship and Councillorship elections held on Saturday across Rivers State.

In a surprising twist, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state managed to secure only three LGAs, despite holding power at the state level.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara also suffered a setback as his own Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area was claimed by the APC, the main opposition party in Rivers.

Announcing the results at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) headquarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, on Sunday afternoon, the Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Michael Odey, confirmed the APC’s sweeping victory.

“The All Progressives Congress has secured 20 chairmanship seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party won three. These results reflect the votes cast across the 23 local government areas,” Dr. Odey declared.

With the announcement, the APC has positioned itself as the dominant force in grassroots politics in Rivers, a state long considered a PDP stronghold. Read More
