Ondo Police Rescue Kidnap Victim in Daring Forest Operation, Three Suspects Killed, Two Arrested

The Ondo State Police Command has successfully rescued a 60-year-old kidnap victim, Mr. Tijani Aremu, after a dramatic gun battle with suspected kidnappers in Ikare.

According to a statement from the Command on Wednesday, operatives attached to the Ikare Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and supported by local forest hunters, launched the operation on August 20, 2025, after Aremu’s abduction.

The kidnappers had demanded millions of naira in ransom and fixed a location for the exchange. Acting on intelligence, the police laid an ambush with the support of the victim’s family. When the suspects arrived to collect the ransom, they engaged security operatives in a fierce gun duel.

“One of the kidnappers was neutralized on the spot while a single-barrel rifle was recovered. Others fled with bullet wounds,” the Command said.

A subsequent combing of nearby forests led to the discovery of two additional lifeless bodies of suspected kidnappers, raising the number neutralized to three. Two suspects — identified as 20-year-old Yahaya Isa and one Ismail Ismail — were arrested.

The operation culminated in the safe rescue of Mr. Aremu, who was found unharmed. He has since been taken to the hospital for medical checks and will soon reunite with his family.

Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, commended the bravery of the operatives and local hunters. He also lauded the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for his “people-centered policing strategy and emphasis on community cooperation,” which he said provided the framework for the successful rescue.

The Police Command urged residents to remain calm and continue supporting security agencies with timely information.

“This operation is a clear testament to what can be achieved when security agencies and community stakeholders work hand in hand. Together, we will make Ondo State unsafe for criminals and secure for law-abiding citizens,” the statement added. Read More

After Failed Demolition Plots, Gov. Abiodun-Led Ogun APC Announces Sen. Daniel’s Suspension on Facebook

After Failed Demolition Plots, Gov. Abiodun-Led Ogun APC Announces Sen. Daniel’s Suspension on Facebook

Days after the botched attempt to demolish Senator Gbenga Daniel’s hotels and houses, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has escalated his rivalry with the former governor, securing Daniel’s suspension from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abiodun, who leads the ruling party in the state, oversaw the indefinite suspension of his political adversary, marking a new phase in their feud ahead of the high-stakes 2027 elections.

The failed demolition of Daniel’s luxury property last week signaled the breakdown of any lingering reconciliation efforts between the two political heavyweights. Following maneuvers by Daniel that stalled the governor’s plan, the APC announced a decision that was hinged on what it terms as “anti-party activities”.

Daniel, who governed Ogun between 2003 and 2011, was suspended alongside lawmaker Kunle Folarin for alleged “anti-party activities” and “misconduct.”

“In exercise of its powers, the State Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State hereby affirms the suspension of two members of our party in Ogun State, Senator Gbenga Daniel and Hon. Kunle Folarin, by their respective wards for alleged anti-party activities,” APC publicity director Nuberu Olufemi said in a Monday statement.

The party accused both men of intimidating members into withdrawing a petition but failed to specify the nature of Daniel’s alleged misconduct. It also did not disclose when or how often the senator was summoned before the suspension was ratified.

Daniel currently represents Ogun East in the National Assembly—the same senatorial zone Abiodun is rumored to be eyeing for 2027. Analysts say this looming contest has driven the governor to sideline his former ally, whom he once relied on for his successful 2019 governorship bid.

Insiders told Peoples Gazette that Abiodun believes removing Daniel from the APC is the surest path to securing the ticket. But Daniel, regarded as a political godfather in Ogun, retains significant grassroots loyalty, making him a formidable opponent.

The governor has long faced accusations of using state machinery against his predecessor. Daniel’s suspension is seen as part of a broader power struggle that has deepened divisions within Ogun APC.

While Daniel’s camp has yet to issue a formal response, his media aide, Stephen Oluyide, did not immediately return calls on whether the senator plans to challenge the suspension or explore an appeal.

With both men now on a collision course, Ogun politics appears set for a turbulent countdown to 2027.

No More Flight Mode: NCAA Orders Phones Completely Off During Take-Off and Landing

No More Flight Mode: NCAA Orders Phones Completely Off During Take-Off and Landing

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has officially banned the use of “flight mode” on mobile phones and portable electronic devices during aircraft take-off and landing, directing passengers to switch off their devices completely.

The announcement was made by NCAA Director General, Capt. Chris Najomo, at the National Civil Aviation Security Committee Meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

“All mobile phones, I repeat, all mobile phones and other portable electronic devices should be switched off during at least the critical phases of flight on all Nigerian airlines. Switched off,” Najomo declared, emphasizing that “flight mode” would no longer be acceptable.

He explained that the directive applies to all airlines operating in Nigeria and instructed them to update their operations manuals accordingly and submit them for NCAA approval.

The move, Najomo said, is part of a broader initiative to tackle aviation security concerns and growing incidents of unruly passenger behavior at Nigerian airports.

“The era of business as usual in aviation safety and passenger conduct is over,” he stressed, adding that airline operators must provide conflict resolution training for their staff, while security and law enforcement officers will undergo reinforced training with clearly defined rules of engagement.

To drive compliance, the NCAA plans to roll out public awareness campaigns, including radio jingles and television series, to educate travelers on the new rules.

The Authority also announced that mock emergency response exercises will be carried out in Lagos and Abuja next week to test the readiness of aviation security personnel.

Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, assured that enforcement would be handled case by case. He urged passengers to direct complaints through the Authority’s channels, while acknowledging that “unruly acts may not be completely eliminated.”

Najomo concluded that the updated rule is designed to strengthen aviation safety standards and ensure the highest level of protection for passengers and crew. Read More

Otunba Gbenga Daniel… The Master Peacemaker Who Tames Storms | By Lukman Omikunle

For Sen. Daniel, politics is not war but a vehicle to serve the people—and peace is the fuel that keeps the vehicle moving

Otunba Gbenga Daniel… The Master Peacemaker Who Tames Storms | By Lukman Omikunle

In the turbulent waters of Nigerian politics, where tempers flare and factions clash, few leaders have consistently demonstrated the rare gift of peacemaking. Otunba Gbenga Daniel, former Governor of Ogun State and current Senator representing Ogun East, stands tall as one of the few voices of calm in the storm.

As governor from 2003 to 2011, Daniel’s art of peace was tested time and again. At moments of provocation, when crises threatened to engulf Ogun’s political and social landscape, he remained the steady hand that doused tensions. He understood that true leadership was not only about projects and policies but also about managing people, calming nerves, and preserving harmony.

Ogun State, under his stewardship, witnessed peace even in periods when political upheaval was rife elsewhere.

But Daniel’s gift for peacemaking did not stop at Ogun’s borders. His influence grew across the Southwest and indeed Nigeria. In 2019, as a prominent leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he was saddled with the task of mediating among warring factions ahead of the general election. Daniel crisscrossed the nation, meeting aggrieved party leaders, reconciling factions, and rebuilding bridges. The result was a revitalized PDP that came the closest it had ever been to reclaiming the presidency after regaining control of several key states.

Senator Gbenga Daniel

His quiet diplomacy, patience, and ability to listen turned bitter rivals into collaborators. Yet, since his exit from the PDP, the party has struggled to replicate that stability, underscoring just how rare and invaluable Daniel’s peacekeeping ability truly is.

Today, as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he has carried this same gift into the ruling party, playing his part in stabilising relationships and diffusing internal frictions. For Daniel, politics is not war but a vehicle to serve the people—and peace is the fuel that keeps the vehicle moving.

Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s enduring ability to turn discord into dialogue is inherent, a natural skill that is rare in the political landscape. He is, without doubt, the master peacemaker in an age of political storms. Read More

“With this intervention, the price of each dialysis session has been reduced from ₦50,000 to just ₦12,000, bringing relief to thousands of citizens battling kidney-related diseases,” Bwala stated.

He confirmed that the subsidy is already being implemented in several major federal medical centres and teaching hospitals across the six geopolitical zones, including:

The commission called on qualified Nigerians to take advantage of the registration exercise, describing voter registration as fundamental to broad-based participation in Nigeria’s democratic process

INEC Opens Online Voter Pre-Registration Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially launched the online pre-registration of voters, marking the first phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement shared on its official X handle, the commission urged eligible Nigerians to begin the process through its dedicated portal, www.cvr.inecnigeria.org.

According to INEC, the pre-registration platform allows prospective voters to input their personal details—including names, dates of birth, residential addresses, and preferred polling units—and then schedule an appointment to complete the process in person.

Applicants can also use the portal to request the transfer of voting locations, apply for replacements of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), or correct errors in their personal information.

“In-person registration starts August 25, 2025, at all its 37 state offices and 774 local government area (LGA) offices nearest to you,” INEC announced.

The electoral body noted that the physical registration exercise would later be expanded to additional centres nationwide after reviewing the CVR rollout, assessing security conditions, and considering the safety of staff and materials.

INEC emphasized that the exercise is strictly for new voters aged 18 and above and warned against multiple registrations, stressing that violators would face penalties.

The commission also called on qualified Nigerians to take advantage of the registration exercise, describing voter registration as fundamental to broad-based participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.

The CVR will run for several months, after which INEC will publish a preliminary register of voters for public review before finalising the list of eligible voters for the 2027 elections. Read More
