EFCC To Arraign 23 ‘Yahoo Boys’ Nabbed at OOPL During Pool Party
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will today, Friday, August 15, 2025, arraign 23 suspected internet fraudsters before Justice Deinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The arraignment follows last month’s high-profile arrest of 93 suspected “Yahoo boys” during a pool party at a hotel within the premises of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta.
In a statement, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale revealed that profiling of the suspects showed almost all had been indicted for offences bordering on impersonation, identity theft, and internet fraud.
According to the anti-graft agency, the arrests were made after intelligence indicated the suspects had relocated their party venue twice to avoid detection — finally settling at the OOPL hotel, believing they could evade EFCC’s net there.
“The former president’s facility was not a target of EFCC’s operations. The suspects were the targets and have confessed to their involvement in internet crimes,” Oyewale clarified.
The EFCC noted that the arraignment will be conducted in batches, with the remaining suspects expected to be charged in the coming days.Read More
President Tinubu deserves credit for the stability of the economy. The reforms have been in the right direction. What is needed next is growth…
“Give Him Credit…,” Okonjo-Iweala Hails Tinubu for Stabilising the Economy
World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has given President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a thumbs-up for steering Nigeria’s economy towards stability amid sweeping reforms.
Speaking after a visit to the State House in Abuja yesterday, the former finance minister and coordinating minister of the economy praised the administration’s decisive economic policies, calling them essential for restoring investor confidence and laying the foundation for sustainable growth.
“We think that the President and his team have worked hard to stabilise the economy, and you cannot improve an economy unless it’s stable,” Okonjo-Iweala said. “So, he has to be given the credit for the stability of the economy. The reforms have been in the right direction. What is needed next is growth… and we need to put in social safety nets so that people who are feeling the pinch of the reforms can also have some support to weather the hardship.”
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, echoed this optimism, declaring that Nigeria remains “open and ready for business” with the rest of the world. He pointed to positive economic indicators as proof of a more stable and investment-friendly environment.
Okonjo-Iweala revealed that her discussions with President Tinubu centred on building robust social safety nets while unlocking growth through job creation, expanding investment opportunities, and boosting household incomes.
She was in Abuja to brief the President on the launch of the Women Exporters in the Digital Economy (WEIDE) Fund—a $50 million global initiative by the WTO and the International Trade Centre (ITC), supported by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Nigeria is one of only four countries selected globally from 67,000 applicants, with 146 women entrepreneurs chosen for the first phase. Sixteen will enter a “booster track” with 18 months of intensive business support, while another 100 will each receive $5,000 and a year of mentorship.
“This is just the beginning,” Okonjo-Iweala said. “We will all work together — the WTO, the ITC, the Ministry of Trade and Investment, and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council — to make sure these businesses expand, employ more people, and put more money in both households’ pockets and the nation’s pocket.”
The WTO chief stressed that the initiative itself is a form of social safety net, empowering women to withstand economic shocks and become key drivers of inclusive national growth. Read More
While state officials insist the demolition plots are part of routine urban renewal efforts, critics argue the timing is suspicious, especially with the 2027 senatorial race approaching
Again, Court bars Ogun Govt from Demolition Raid on Gbenga Daniel’s Properties in Ijebu-Ode
An Ogun State High Court sitting in Ijebu Ode has issued a fresh interim injunction restraining the Ogun State Government, its agents, and affiliates from demolishing or tampering with any property belonging to former Ogun governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and his company, Conference Hotel Limited.
The order, handed down on Thursday by Justice A. A. Omoniyi, covers not only the Ijebu Ode property in question but “any other properties belonging to the claimants within the Ogun East Senatorial District or elsewhere in Ogun State.”
The ruling follows a motion filed by Conference Hotel Limited and Daniel, in suit number HCJ/125/2025, against the Governor of Ogun State, the Attorney General, the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority, and the Ogun State Physical Planning & Urban Development.
The latest legal twist stems from a chain of events beginning August 8, 2025, when the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority served “Notice to Quit” and contravention notices on Daniel’s private residence, The Asoludero Court, and the Conference Hotel in Sagamu. Citing the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022, the government alleged the properties lacked proper permits.
Daniel and his camp have strongly rejected the allegations, insisting the law is being applied retroactively to buildings “legally constructed many years before the law was enacted.” They have labelled the moves a politically motivated vendetta, recalling the September 2023 demolition of DATKEM Plaza—owned by Daniel’s wife—on similar grounds.
While state officials insist the actions are part of routine urban renewal efforts, critics argue the timing is suspicious, especially with the 2027 senatorial race approaching. Despite earlier denials of political motives, the government escalated matters by replacing the initial notices with “sealing and demolition notices” on August 11, 2025. A court in Sagamu subsequently issued its own interim injunction to shield the properties.
At Thursday’s hearing, Daniel was represented by a legal team led by A. M. Kotoye (SAN), alongside O. T. Are and A. O. Adeniyi. The court ordered the defendants to “stay off further action” on the disputed property, located off Taiwo Osipitan Street, which had been served a “Notice to Quit” dated August 12, 2025 (serial number 00048539/12/8/2025).
The injunction will remain in force pending the determination of the claimants’ Motion on Notice, set for hearing on Friday, August 22, 2025. Read More
The ICPC warned that it “reserves the right to reopen investigations” if James breaches his undertaking or if new evidence
ICPC Nails UK Visa Fraudster in High-Profile Document Forgery Case
By Newsheadline247
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of Ijamulisi Ayodele James for forging documents used in fraudulent United Kingdom visa applications.
In a statement on Wednesday, ICPC spokesperson Demola Bakare said the breakthrough came after “credible intelligence from the British High Commission” linked James to the production of fake documents — including invitation and introduction letters purportedly from Clarivate Analytics and Thomson Reuters, as well as a falsified bank statement and payslip.
Investigations revealed that the forged materials were prepared at the request of Dennis Adetoye Adeniran and Awoke Nimota Omobolaji, both previously convicted in related cases in 2019 and 2025, respectively.
James was arraigned on August 7 before Justice R.A. Oshodi at the Ikeja Special Offences Court on a four-count amended charge of forgery under Section 467 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C28, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. He pleaded guilty to all charges under a plea bargain approved by the Commission.
The court handed him a fine of ₦1 million or seven days’ imprisonment for each count — amounting to a total fine of ₦4 million, with the sentences running concurrently. If unable to pay, James will serve his term at the Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Facility.
Justice Oshodi further ordered that James’ biometric details be entered into the Lagos State Judiciary Offenders’ Database and mandated him to file an affidavit of good behaviour at the High Court Registry.
The ICPC warned that it “reserves the right to reopen investigations” if James breaches his undertaking or if new evidence, undeclared assets, or corruption-related offences surface.
According to the Commission, the case sends a strong message about its determination to combat document fraud, protect the integrity of international travel systems, and enforce the rule of law. Read More
Until his dramatic defection, Ogundele was not just the PDP’s state chairman — he was also one of Ladi Adebutu’s most trusted political lieutenants, privy to the PDP financier’s election playbook
By Lukman Olajide | Newsheadline247
Former Ogun PDP Chairman, Sikirulai Ogundele, has emerged as an unlikely but potent force for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of Saturday’s high-stakes Remo House of Representatives by-election slated for August 16, 2027.
Now wearing APC colours, Ogundele has been appointed to both the party’s Campaign Council and its Strategic Committee — roles that insiders say are far from ceremonial. His deep knowledge of the opposition’s inner workings is being weaponised for a fierce political battle across Ikenne, Sagamu, and Remo North in Ogun East.
With his political base rooted in Ifo, Ogun Central, Ogundele brings what one APC insider described as “that rare insight he has brought to the table to help APC secure victory in Saturday’s high-stakes poll.”
Until his dramatic defection, Ogundele was not just the PDP’s state chairman — he was also one of Ladi Adebutu’s most trusted political lieutenants, privy to the PDP financier’s election playbook. He was a core member of the think-tank that masterminded the party’s recent electoral fights, including the razor-close 2023 gubernatorial race that nearly delivered Adebutu the governorship.
Ladi Adebutu
Adebutu lost that contest by a whisker, ceding a second term to Governor Dapo Abiodun under the APC banner.
Now, the rivalry between the two Iperu-born heavyweights has morphed into a personal and political grudge match. Adebutu, famed for his grassroots mobilisation and sharp grasp of local politics, has yet to beat Abiodun in any direct or proxy election since 2019. Saturday’s by-election is his latest opportunity to break that losing streak — and his supporters see it as a litmus test for his enduring influence.
The APC, for its part, is determined to keep its grip on the constituency, which until January 2025 was represented by Adewunmi Onanuga, fondly called “Adewunmi Ijaya.” The two-term House of Representatives member and Deputy Chief Whip was a staunch Abiodun ally credited with bringing unprecedented development to the Remo Federal Constituency before her sudden passing.
Dapo Abiodun
For Abiodun and Adebutu, this is no ordinary election. It’s a rematch layered with political ambition, personal pride, and the promise of lasting bragging rights. For Ogundele, it’s a chance to prove his worth in his new political home — and perhaps settle old scores. Read More
Lawal urged young people to channel their energy into productive ventures
Ota Youth Week: LG Chairman Rallies Youths to Reject Drug Abuse, Embrace Purposeful Living
The Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Hon. Lawal Adewale Wasiu FCA, has charged Nigerian youths to embrace purposeful living and shun drug abuse, warning that substance misuse is a fast track to personal and societal ruin.
Speaking through the Supervisor for Information, Education, Youth, and Sports, Mr. Bojinu Sewedo Shedrack, Hon. Lawal delivered the message at a seminar themed “High in Life, Not on Drugs” — part of the Ota Youth Week 2025 celebrations, held at the Ota Recreation Centre.
The event featured expert presentations from Lion Ibiba Odili, Assistant Commander General Narcotics; SP L. O. Chukwusa of the Sango Police Division; and Dr. Biola Bankole, MD of CKC Hospital Ota. They outlined the devastating effects of drug abuse, linking it to rising crime, threats to public safety, and long-term health consequences.
Hon. Lawal urged young people to channel their energy into productive ventures.
“Dream big, strive for excellence, and contribute meaningfully to society,” he said. “The future of our nation depends on the resilience and ambition of its young people.”
He further called on parents, guardians, and mentors to play an active role in guiding and supporting the youth, stressing that collective vigilance is essential in the fight against drug abuse.
“We must work together to build a thriving and drug-free Ado-Odo/Ota community,” he added.
The chairman’s remarks align with his administration’s ongoing investment in youth development and community-building projects, a commitment he says will remain a priority. Read More
The union acknowledged that the entrance of Dangote Petroleum Refinery into the market helped to stabilise prices
NLC Applauds Dangote Refinery, Pushes for Naira-Based Crude Sales to Cut Fuel Prices
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has lauded the Dangote Petroleum Refinery as a game-changing national asset, describing it as a critical step toward closing Nigeria’s fuel supply gap, creating jobs, and restoring public confidence in the nation’s industrial potential.
During an inspection tour of the refinery and the Dangote Fertiliser Limited complex, Chairman of the NLC Lagos State chapter, Comrade Funmi Sessi, praised the sheer scale and strategic impact of the Dangote Group’s investments.
“Today, we have seen the massive Dangote Refinery project, as well as the fertiliser plant. We have also observed some of Dangote’s other investments in this axis. It is truly enormous and highly impressive,” said the NLC chairperson. “I believe what we have seen is a clear effort to bridge the gap in the availability of essential products in the country and to create job opportunities for Nigerians and others as well as industrialise the country.”
Chairman Labour Writers Association of Nigeria, Toba Agboola; Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Dangote Industries Limited, Anthony Chiejina; NLC Chairperson, Lagos Branch, Comrade Funmi Agnes Sessi; Vice President, Oil and Gas, Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, and Head of Administration, Dangote Petroleum Refinery Limited, Musa Bala; during the Lagos NLC’s visit to Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Fertilizer Plant, Lekki, Lagos, on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
The union acknowledged that following the Federal Government’s removal of petrol subsidies, Nigerians experienced an unprecedented surge in the cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). However, the entrance of Dangote Petroleum Refinery into the market helped to stabilise prices.
“It wasn’t until Dangote came into the picture that we started seeing some relief. His intervention significantly crashed the escalated prices of PMS and other refined products. That’s a clear demonstration of private sector leadership,” she stated.
The NLC made a direct appeal to the FG to prioritise the sale of crude oil to the Dangote Refinery in naira. The union argued that forcing the company to import crude or purchase locally in dollars undermines the promise of lower fuel prices for ordinary Nigerians.
“This country has crude oil in abundance. So why is Dangote still being made to import crude or pay for it in hard currency?” the NLC queried. “If the government is truly committed to reducing fuel prices and supporting local refining, it must sell crude oil to Dangote in naira.”
The union stressed that sourcing crude locally in local currency would significantly lower operational costs and, by extension, lead to a more sustainable reduction in fuel prices.
“With a daily capacity of 650,000 barrels, this refinery can serve Nigeria and even the West African sub-region. We also seen big ships taking fertilisers to other countries. The government must maximise”
The NLC lauded Alhaji Aliko Dangote for achieving a fully functional, world-class refinery capable of meeting both domestic and regional demands for refined petroleum products.
“When government-owned refineries failed, one man stepped up. Aliko Dangote didn’t just make promises; he fulfilled them. He has proven that Nigeria can not only refine its own products but also meet international quality standards,” she added.
The union also hailed the refinery’s production of Euro 5-compliant fuel, which features significantly reduced sulphur content, aligning with international environmental standards and boosting Nigeria’s credibility in the global petroleum market.
“This is the kind of pride we want to see — a Nigerian company producing at global standards. It is changing the narrative and elevating Nigeria’s position globally. It’s time the government supports and maximises the capacity of this asset”
In addition to fuel, the NLC noted the group’s fertiliser company, which is already exporting to international markets. It urged the government to leverage these capabilities to enhance food security and reduce dependence on imported agricultural inputs.
Vice President, Oil and Gas, Dangote Industries Limited, Mr Devakumar Edwin, said the planned deployment of 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks to support the distribution of refined petroleum products across Nigeria is aimed at ensuring that the benefits of domestic refining and the resulting reduction in fuel prices are fully passed on to Nigerian consumers.
Mr Edwin stated that the introduction of the CNG-powered fleet is a strategic step to reduce logistics costs in fuel distribution — a major factor in the final pump price.
“The deployment of these 4,000 CNG-powered trucks will help us pass down the benefits of domestic refining and the reduction in product prices to consumers,” Edwin said. “The aim is to support logistics and make distribution more efficient, not to displace any existing players in the sector.”
He further explained that the use of CNG-powered trucks, in addition to being more environmentally friendly, will significantly reduce transportation expenses, ultimately making refined products more affordable for Nigerians.
Edwin also highlighted the wider impact of Dangote’s industrial ventures, particularly in stimulating competition and growth in key sectors of the Nigerian economy. He cited the Dangote Sugar Refinery as an example, noting that its success paved the way for other companies, including BUA Group and Nigerian Flour Mills to invest in sugar production.
“We’ve seen it with sugar, and we’ve seen it with cement. The success of Dangote Cement led to the emergence of players like BUA, Mangal, and the expansion of Lafarge,” he said. “In the same way, the success of this refinery will drive the emergence of more private refineries in Nigeria.”
According to him, the Dangote Refinery is not only helping to address Nigeria’s long-standing reliance on imported refined products but is also setting the pace for a sustainable and competitive refining industry that will benefit the broader economy.
He noted that the Dangote Group has become a nurturing ground for Nigerian engineers, scientists and technicians, many of whom have gone on to work as expatriates in various countries. He assured the labour leaders of the company’s steadfast commitment to human capital development, staff welfare, and the overall wellbeing of the economy, emphasising that Aliko Dangote is a patriotic Nigerian fully dedicated to the nation’s progress. In the case of the unruly passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, on the Ibom Airline on Sunday, the 10th of August, 2025, I have conferred with Ibom Airline to withdraw the Complaint against her today
From Airport Chaos to Clemency: Comfort Emmanson, KWAM 1 Get FG’s Pardon After Nigeria’s Most Talked-About Aviation Clashes
The Federal Government has formally withdrawn its criminal complaint against Ms. Comfort Emmanson, marking the end of the widely publicised Ibom Air saga.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, made the announcement in a statement personally signed on Wednesday, revealing that the decision followed consultations with critical stakeholders in the aviation sector and those directly involved in recent high-profile incidents of unruly behaviour at Nigerian airports.
The cases involved Emmanson — arrested over an altercation with Ibom Air crew members — and Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1), who was accused in a separate incident of obstructing safe aircraft operations.
According to Keyamo, the government has resolved to “rest the cases” in light of appeals from respected Nigerians and the lessons learned from the controversies.
His full statement: “In the last 48 hours, I have been in consultation with critical stakeholders in the Aviation Sector and those involved in the unfortunate incidents regarding the unruly behaviours of certain individuals at our airports of recent.
Though regrettable, we think valuable lessons have been learnt by all sides to these incidents and airport security protocol, especially, have been well highlighted for the travelling public. If nothing at all, the episodes have undoubtedly helped to raise public awareness about appropriate conduct within the aviation space.
As highlighted in my previous statements on the last two incidents, clear wrongs were committed by both the offending passengers and staff of the airlines involved from all the evidence available to us and those available to the public. It is clear that all the actors involved cannot continue to highlight the injury or injustice done to them without acknowledging their own equal culpability.
Therefore, after reviewing the entire incidents, including appeals made by well-meaning individuals and remorse shown by the actors, the following decisions have been reached:
THE CASE OF IBOM AIRLINE AND MS. COMFORT EMMANSON
(a) In the case of the unruly passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, on the Ibom Airline on Sunday, the 10th of August, 2025, I have conferred with Ibom Airline to withdraw the Complaint against her today. When the Police took her Statement in presence of her lawyer, she exhibited great remorse for her conduct.
(b) Subsequent to the withdrawal of the complaint by the Complainant, the CP of Airport Command and the Police Prosecutor will immediately take the remaining steps to facilitate her release from Kirikiri Prisons within this week.
(c) I have also conferred with the leadership of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) and have appealed to them to lift the life-time flying ban imposed on her, to which they agreed. The details of the resolution will be made public by the AON subsequently.
THE CASE OF VALUEJET AND WASIU AYINDE MARSHALL (KWAM 1)
(d) In the case of KWAM 1, the NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to a one-month period. FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward.
(e) Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the Police.
(f) In the case of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba of VALUEJET, the NCAA is to restore their licenses after the same period of one-month ban after undergoing some mandatory professional re-appraisal.
The details will be announced by the NCAA.
AIRLINE OPERATORS, AVIATION AND OTHER GOVERNMENT AGENCIES
I have directed all relevant Aviation agencies in collaboration with other complementary agencies outside aviation to IMMEDIATELY begin a retreat NEXT WEEK to properly retrain and prepare our Aviation security personnel on how to deal with errant and disruptive passengers and how to de-escalate potentially explosive situations. The retreat will be fully covered by the Press with the opportunity to ask all the relevant questions.
The Airlines will also have their session where the conduct and attitude of their staff towards members of the travelling public will be in full focus.
FINAL COMMENTS
The above decisions were taken by the Government and the airline operators purely on COMPASSIONATE grounds as the Government will never pander to base sentiments, politically-motivated views or warped legal opinions when clear encroachment of our laws is involved.
We are also sending a CLEAR MESSAGE that we take safety and security in the aviation sector very seriously, and we have decided to draw a line after these clemencies. Read More
KWAM1 is accused of engaging in unruly conduct that allegedly obstructed the safe operation of an aircraft, in violation of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations
Airport Chaos! Police Set to Probe KWAM 1 Over Alleged Disruption of Abuja–Lagos Flight
The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, over allegations of unruly conduct that reportedly obstructed the safe operation of an aircraft at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Tuesday that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had formally petitioned the police over the August 5, 2025 incident, which allegedly violated the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023.
“The Nigeria Police Force has received an official petition from NCAA over an alleged incident involving Mr. Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (popularly known as KWAM 1).
“He is accused of engaging in unruly conduct that allegedly obstructed the safe operation of an aircraft, in violation of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023, following a reported incident on 5 August 2025 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja,” Adejobi stated.
According to him, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, to immediately commence a “thorough investigation into the matter, to unravel the circumstances which led to the ugly incident and ensure justice is served accordingly.”
Adejobi added that the police remain committed to ensuring safety and security within Nigeria’s aviation sector:
“The Force hereby assures the public of its commitment to upholding safety and security within Nigeria’s aviation sector, while assuring stakeholders in the sector of improved collaboration towards aviation security and strict compliance with aviation laws.”
Eyewitness accounts allege that the confrontation began when KWAM 1 attempted to board a ValueJet flight to Lagos carrying a flask suspected by aviation staff to contain alcohol — a prohibited substance on domestic flights in Nigeria.
When asked to surrender the flask, the musician reportedly refused and later moved to block the aircraft from taxiing, escalating the standoff.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police have yet to announce whether charges will be filed. Read More
