Tinubu Hails Late Awujale as Symbol of Integrity Amid Burial Controversy

Tinubu Hails Late Awujale as Symbol of Integrity Amid Burial Controversy

President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing him as a beacon of integrity, humility, and selfless service.

Speaking during the eighth-day Fidau prayer held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, the President reflected on the monarch’s legacy and deep-rooted impact on the Yoruba nation and Nigeria at large.

“Today marks a significant day in our nation’s history, particularly in the history of the Yoruba people. Nowhere will you find a better definition of our culture than in the life of the late Awujale,” President Tinubu said.

The revered monarch, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 91, was buried the following day according to Islamic rites—a decision consistent with the monarch’s personal faith and a stance he championed during his lifetime.

President Tinubu urged Nigerians to uphold the values that Oba Adetona embodied. “To honour this great man, we must be more united, bonded in the spirit he left behind, and appreciate his legacy, even in death.”

He also recalled the monarch’s role in his political journey. “I came to him for prayers before the election, and he gave me his blessings. I succeeded because of your support and the blessings of the late Awujale… He said, ‘You will win that election.’”

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, who hosted the event, praised President Tinubu’s attendance, calling it a symbol of the deep bond between the late king and the nation’s leadership.

“Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was more than a monarch. His 65-year reign brought remarkable development, not only to Ijebuland but to the entire Western region and Nigeria,” the governor said.

Other dignitaries in attendance included Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq (Kwara), Governor Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), and former Ogun State Governors Olusegun Osoba and Ibikunle Amosun.

The ceremony featured Islamic prayers, personal tributes, and reflections on the king’s transformative reign.

Despite the dignified farewell, the burial of the late monarch has sparked ongoing controversy within traditionalist circles. Oba Adetona, a devout Muslim, was buried according to Islamic customs—a decision that reignited the debate over how Yoruba kings should be buried.

As early as 2020, the monarch had advocated for the right of traditional rulers to be buried according to their personal religious beliefs, rather than strictly by traditional rites. This led to the enactment of the Ogun State Chieftaincy Law in 2022, which permits monarchs to choose the mode of their burial.

However, not all were pleased with the decision. On the day of the burial, tensions escalated when Adedire Adetona, the late king’s eldest son, reportedly barred traditionalists from entering the burial grounds.

Videos circulating online later showed several Yoruba traditional leaders expressing disapproval over what they viewed as a deviation from ancestral norms.

They warned that such actions could erode Yoruba heritage and called for stricter oaths to be administered to future kings, compelling them to uphold traditional customs. Some even suggested that monarchs unwilling to observe Yoruba rites should renounce the throne altogether.

The late Awujale’s burial may have fulfilled his personal wishes, but it also served as a flashpoint in the growing debate between modern religious rights and preservation of cultural heritage within Yoruba kingship. Read More

Customs Seize ₦1.7 Billion Worth of Smuggled Goods in South-West Crackdown

Customs Seize ₦1.7 Billion Worth of Smuggled Goods in South-West Crackdown

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the seizure of contraband goods worth over ₦1.7 billion, underscoring its renewed commitment to dismantling smuggling networks and protecting Nigeria’s economy.

The declaration was made during a press briefing held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Customs Training College, Ikeja, Lagos, by the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who was represented by Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) Hussein Ejibunu, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind.

ACG Ejibunu commended the recent string of operational victories secured by the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ and Operation Whirlwind, noting that their heightened vigilance is delivering critical results in the war against smuggling.

“The sustained operational tempo and intelligence-led enforcement have resulted in the seizure of goods with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦1,784,432,000,” Ejibunu revealed.

Between June 3 and July 18, 2025, the FOU Zone ‘A’ conducted 102 enforcement operations across the South-West region, leading to significant seizures and disruption of illicit trade routes.

Major Items Intercepted include:

  • 3,500 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice (50kg each) – equivalent to six trailer loads
  • 304kg of Cannabis Sativa
  • 7,900 litres of PMS (petrol) concealed in jerrycans
  • 95 cartons of frozen poultry
  • 54 bags and 20 bales of used clothing
  • 41 bags of used footwear
  • 14 used vehicles, 148 used tyres, and 42 used gas cylinders
  • 31 used air-conditioners

In a more sophisticated twist, officers also intercepted several misdeclared containers, including:

  • A 40-foot container of used tyres
  • A 20-foot container loaded with unregistered pharmaceuticals
  • Other trucks smuggling prohibited items such as used refrigerators, second-hand clothes, and imported supermarket goods

“These consignments were deliberately misdeclared in a bid to circumvent due process,” ACG Ejibunu said.

The crackdown led to the arrest of nine suspects—some of whom have been granted administrative bail, while others remain under investigation. Additionally, the unit recovered ₦95,587,231.47 in underpaid import duties via Demand Notices (DNs) issued for improperly declared cargo.

CGC Adeniyi, through his representative, praised the dedication of customs operatives:

“They are patriots who daily risk their lives to uphold the economic and territorial integrity of the nation.”

He also stressed the need for continued collaboration with traditional rulers, security agencies, and the public:

“Our familiarisation visits are part of our broader strategy to enhance synergy and community trust.”

The latest operations reflect the NCS’s resolve to stamp out illicit trade and restore order to Nigeria’s border corridors—one seizure at a time. Read More

The solemn yet majestic event took place at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu Ode, a location befitting the stature of the late monarch whose reign spanned over six decades of fearless leadership, cultural preservation, and national impact.

Busted After 7 Years: NDLEA Nabs Elusive Drug Kingpin, Launches Nationwide Offensive

Busted After 7 Years: NDLEA Nabs Elusive Drug Kingpin, Launches Nationwide Offensive

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has captured one of Nigeria’s most wanted drug kingpins, Okpara Paul Chigozie, after seven years on the run. The 60-year-old fugitive was arrested on Sunday, July 13, at his hideout in the Isheri area of Lagos, marking a significant victory in Nigeria’s war on narcotics.

Chigozie’s arrest followed the early morning interception of one of his couriers, Achebe Kenneth Nnamdi, along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway. NDLEA operatives, acting on intelligence, stopped Nnamdi’s white Toyota Sienna van at 5:45 a.m. and discovered 7.6kg of cocaine and 900g of methamphetamine hidden in compartments, thanks to a sniffer dog-assisted search.

A follow-up raid at Chigozie’s residence, located at 72 Michael Ojo Street, yielded an additional 1.8kg of cocaine and 1.3kg of methamphetamine, bringing the total seizure in the operation to 11.6kg.

In separate operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), NDLEA operatives made additional breakthroughs. On July 16, they arrested Italy-bound Omoregie Nice Uyiosa, who was found with 7,790 pills of tramadol and rohypnol concealed in his luggage. Uyiosa confessed the drugs were intended for resale in Italy.

Just a day later, on July 17, officers intercepted 1.7kg of skunk packed in Golden Morn cereal boxes and destined for Pakistan. The suspect, Chioba Robert Uchenna, was arrested at the airport’s export shed while attempting to ship the illicit cargo as part of consolidated freight.

In a raid that exposed a local drug distribution ring, NDLEA operatives stormed Sarah Sam Hotels in the Kosofe area of Lagos on July 19. There, they arrested Obayemi Oyetade, the alleged ringleader, and recovered an assortment of “party drugs” including 1.3kg of chocolate cannabis, 900g of cannabis gummies, and 22.9g of skunk. Three vehicles linked to the operation were also seized.

In Kaduna, a large drug warehouse was discovered in the Narayi High Cost area of Chikun LGA, where NDLEA seized 742.9kg of skunk and Colorado. Suspects Onyeka Madu, Monday Nwadishi, and Emmanuel Madu were arrested in connection with the find.

In Kano State, 36,000 tramadol pills were intercepted along the Danbatta-Kazaure Road, with one Lawan Rabiu arrested. In Gombe, 25,000 pills of tramadol and Exol-5 were seized from Aliyu Abubakar, while two others were arrested in Yemaltu Deba LGA with 29kg of skunk.

Across the country, NDLEA continued its aggressive clampdown:

In Borno, Audu Modu, 44, was arrested in Maiduguri with 74,360 pills of opioids.

In Bayelsa, Akuna Nelson, 63, was arrested in Yenagoa with 163 litres of ‘skuchies’, a dangerous cocktail of drugs and alcohol.

In Kogi, four men—Ikechukwu Abugu, Sunday Ani, Chukwu Christian, and Emmanuel Olisakwe—were arrested with 2kg of methamphetamine on the Okene-Lokoja highway.

A raid in Aba, Abia State, on the notorious base of Nduka Obi led to the recovery of multiple narcotics and ₦736,000 in suspected drug proceeds.

In Enugu, Chisom Okpalaeke, 30, was caught with 45,000 tramadol pills.

In Taraba, two suspects were caught with 10,000 tramadol capsules and cannabis in Dan Anacha, Gassol LGA.

As part of its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, the NDLEA also conducted sensitization and anti-drug lectures in schools across Niger, Adamawa, Enugu, Anambra, and Kano States, reinforcing its dual mission of reducing both drug supply and demand.

The agency’s Chairman and Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised officers for their vigilance and commitment to ridding the country of illicit drugs.

“These operations demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-driven policing and our strategic deployment of technology,” Marwa said. “We are not just chasing traffickers; we are cutting off their networks.”

With the arrest of Chigozie and ongoing operations across Nigeria, the NDLEA continues to send a clear message to drug traffickers.

“Okanlomo Eleyi of Ogun” – Tinubu Rechristens  Gov. Abiodun

“Okanlomo Eleyi of Ogun” – Tinubu Rechristens  Gov. Abiodun

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday rekindled a simmering political tension in Ogun State, when he mockingly referred to Governor Dapo Abiodun as the “Okanlomo Eleyi of Ogun State” — a quip loaded with sarcasm and pointed political commentary.

Speaking at the 8th-day Fidau prayer for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, in Ijebu-Ode, the President paused mid-speech and turned to Abiodun:

“This Okanlomo Eleyi of Ogun State — always talking,” Tinubu said, drawing laughter from the crowd.

While some in the audience chuckled, the remark was not lost on Ogun residents who have grown weary of Abiodun’s leadership. For many, it reinforced the long-held perception that the governor’s tenure has been more talk than tangible progress.

Though cloaked in humour, Tinubu’s remark struck a familiar chord. Ogun State under Governor Abiodun has faced mounting criticism over worsening infrastructure, poor road conditions, and recurrent delays in paying civil servants’ salaries. Critics accuse the governor of focusing on lofty promises and endless reassurances rather than visible results.

“Despite public assurances, there’s been little to show on the ground,” said one civil society observer. “People are tired of speeches; they want real development.”

This is not the first time Tinubu has publicly aired his reservations about the governor. In 2022, during the heated APC presidential primaries, the then-candidate reminded Nigerians that Abiodun had him to thank for his rise to power:

“He wouldn’t have become governor without me,” Tinubu said at a campaign event in Abeokuta.

Beyond the sarcasm, Tinubu’s comment appears to double as a stern message to office holders — a call for performance over posturing.

With political realignments underway and 2027 looming on the horizon, many analysts view Sunday’s incident as more than just a joke — but rather, a subtle shift in tone and expectations from the presidency.

In a political climate where loyalty once guaranteed favour, Tinubu seems to be sending a new message: results will matter more than rhetoric.

‘Nigerians Easily Become UK Citizens, While I Can’t Pass Nigerian Citizenship to My Children’ – Kemi Badenoch

‘Nigerians Easily Become UK Citizens, While I Can’t Pass Nigerian Citizenship to My Children’ – Kemi Badenoch

UK Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, has sparked debate over immigration policies and citizenship laws, claiming that while Nigerians find it relatively easy to become British citizens, her own children are barred from acquiring Nigerian citizenship—simply because she is a woman.

Badenoch made the remarks during an interview on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS on Sunday, where she contrasted the British immigration system with those of other countries, using Nigeria as a prime example.

“It’s virtually impossible, for example, to get Nigerian citizenship,” she said. “I have that citizenship by virtue of my parents; I can’t give it to my children because I’m a woman.”

The UK politician, who was born in Wimbledon to Nigerian parents and spent part of her childhood in Lagos, expressed frustration at what she described as an imbalance and exploitation of systems.

“Yet loads of Nigerians come to the UK and stay for a relatively free period of time, acquire British citizenship. We need to stop being naive.”

Badenoch’s comments appeared to question the UK’s comparatively generous naturalisation process, while also condemning gender-based discrimination embedded in Nigerian nationality laws.

Under Nigeria’s existing legislation, citizenship by descent is primarily passed down through the male line, making it difficult for Nigerian women married to foreign nationals to confer citizenship to their children, unlike their male counterparts.

Her remarks have since reignited conversations around gender inequality in citizenship rights and raised eyebrows over immigration reform rhetoric in the UK.

While some hailed Badenoch’s boldness in tackling both British immigration policy and Nigeria’s outdated laws, critics accused her of stoking anti-immigrant sentiments ahead of a potentially heated election season.

The dual-national lawmaker has frequently positioned herself as a reformer, urging for “fairness” and “common sense” in public policy—especially around migration.

As the UK grapples with immigration control and Nigeria continues to face calls for gender-equal constitutional reforms, Badenoch’s comments may fuel policy debates on both sides of the world.

Gov. Abiodun’s crowd renting scandal mars Awujale’s burial

The solemnity of the late Awujale of Ijebuland’s burial, scheduled for today, Sunday, July 20, 2025, is reportedly being overshadowed by a burgeoning “crowd renting” scandal allegedly involving Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Sources close to the governor’s inner circle claim these actions are a desperate attempt to impress President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is expected to attend the funeral.

Governor Abiodun allegedly instructed his lieutenants to mobilize individuals to attend the burial proceedings in Ijebu Ode, offering an alleged payment of ₦20,000 per head, a source within Ijebu Ode Local Government offered under conditions of anonymity. The goal, according to a senior civil servant involved in the provision of funds for the mobilisation, is to artificially inflate attendance figures, projecting an image of widespread local support for the governor.

This purported strategy is seen as a direct response to persistent whispers of Governor Abiodun’s diminishing popularity, particularly in the Ogun East senatorial district, where he reportedly suffered significant electoral losses in the last election.

By allegedly orchestrating a massive turnout at the Awujale’s funeral, the governor is believed to be attempting to mislead President Tinubu and falsely demonstrate a robust political base.

The area around the burial venue is already awash with numerous large banners of the governor welcoming Mr President, setting the stage for a grand event.

However, these emerging allegations cast a dark cloud over the authenticity of the anticipated crowds, raising serious questions about the true level of organic support for the state’s chief executive.

Efforts to obtain a comment from Governor Abiodun’s media team regarding these serious allegations were unsuccessful as of press time.

The controversy threatens to divert attention from the deeply significant cultural and spiritual event, turning what should be a dignified farewell into a political spectacle. Read More

“They Were Never With Us” — PDP Disowns Alleged Defectors to APC in Ado-Odo/Ota LG

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government has firmly disassociated itself from a group of individuals recently welcomed into the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating unequivocally that the supposed defectors were never members of the party.

This follows the newsheadline247 report of the Friday event where the Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Hon. Lawal Adewale Wasiu, FCA, received a large number of alleged former PDP members into the APC. Hon. Wasiu described the occasion as a “historic homecoming” and a testament to “political unity and progress” within the local government.

Held within the heart of the local government, the event drew attention from across various wards and featured public declarations of loyalty to the APC by individuals claimed to be returning from the opposition PDP.

However, the PDP has swiftly debunked these claims. In a press statement issued by the Secretary of the Ado-Odo/Ota PDP chapter, Badmus Abdulahi Tunde, the party described the claim as “false” and accused the individuals involved of staging a misleading political stunt.

“We wish to state categorically and for the record that the individuals mentioned in the said publication are not members of the PDP in Ado-Odo/Ota local government chapter,” the statement read.

“Since we assumed office last year, they have neither attended any of our 16 ward meetings nor have their names appeared in any official party register or attendance record.”

The statement, which was in response to our report on the defection, alleged that the so-called defectors were never recognized members of the PDP and had no verifiable affiliation with the party.

“Only registered and verifiable members are recognized as bona fide members of the PDP,” Badmus stated. “These individuals are merely seeking to gain public attention by falsely associating themselves with our great party.”

He further described the move as a “well-known political gimmick” and called on the public and media outlets to disregard the claims. According to him, the PDP remains focused on its broader mission of political reform in Ogun State.

“Our focus remains unwavering to rescue the people of Ogun State in 2027 from the grip of a failed ruling All Promised Cancelled (APC) party that has subjected the people, including civil servants, to untold hardship and neglect,” the statement concluded.

RE: FALSE CLAIM OF DEFECTION BY NON-MEMBERS OF PDP IN ADO-ODO/OTA LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Our attention has been drawn to a recent publication by an online news outlet (Newsheadline247* claiming that some individuals have decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

We wish to state categorically and for the record that the individuals mentioned in the said publication are not members of the PDP in Ado-Odo/Ota local government chapter . Since we assumed office last year, they have neither attended any of our 16 ward meetings nor have their names appeared in any official party register or attendance record.

While we recognize that many people may align with or support our party from a distance, only registered and verifiable members are recognized as bona fide members of the PDP. As the Secretary of the PDP in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, I can confidently affirm that these individuals are merely seeking to gain public attention by falsely associating themselves with our great party.

This is a well-known political gimmick, and we urge the public and media to disregard such misinformation. These individuals were never members of our party.

As a party, our focus remains unwavering to rescue the people of Ogun State in 2027 from the grip of a failed ruling All Promised Cancelled (APC) party that has subjected the people, including civil servants to untold hardship and neglect.

We remain committed to the mission of rebuilding and restoring hope to the good people of Ogun State.

Signed:
Badmus Abdulahi Tunde
Secretary, PDP Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government
