IGP Commissions 31 Gunboats to Strengthen Maritime Security

Reaffirms Nigeria Police Commitment to Securing Waterways

The Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Thursday commissioned 31 newly acquired gunboats to enhance the Nigeria Police Force’s maritime security operations.

The commissioning ceremony, held in Lagos, represents a significant boost to the Force’s Marine Unit and a strategic step toward securing Nigeria’s coastal and inland waterways. The move is aimed at curbing criminal activity, including piracy, smuggling, and economic sabotage, while safeguarding critical national infrastructure and supporting trade logistics.

Speaking at the event, IGP Egbetokun described the acquisition as a timely response to the evolving security threats within Nigeria’s maritime domain. He emphasized that the new vessels, fitted with advanced navigation and communication systems, will improve the operational capabilities of the Marine Unit.

“This milestone reflects our renewed drive to strengthen maritime policing, improve rescue and patrol operations, and secure the nation’s blue economy,” the IGP stated.

Top police officials present at the ceremony included DIG Yakubu Kwazi (Operations), AIG Adegoke Fayoade (Zone 2), AIG Funsho Adegboye (PMF), AIG Tunji Rilwan Disu (SPU), and ACP Chima Ogarashi, Force Marine Officer. The event also saw participation from key maritime stakeholders, including representatives from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Sensor and Safety Ltd.

IGP Egbetokun reiterated the Police Force’s commitment to inter-agency collaboration, pledging ongoing partnerships with maritime agencies to ensure safe and uninterrupted operations across Nigeria’s waterways.

He charged Marine Unit officers to maximize the use of the gunboats and remain vigilant in delivering on their mandate.

The commissioning marks a pivotal step in modernizing Nigeria’s maritime security infrastructure and reflects the Force’s proactive approach to addressing the country’s dynamic security challenges.

Dangote Honors President Tinubu, Names Refinery Access Road After Him

Chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has announced that the access road leading to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals will be named Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road, in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Dangote made the announcement on Thursday during President Tinubu’s tour of the refinery complex, which also marked the official commissioning of the Deep Sea Port Access Road. The road serves as a critical link connecting the Lekki Deep Sea Port, the Lagos Free Trade Zone, and the Dangote Refinery to the Sagamu–Benin Expressway via Ijebu Ode.

Praising President Tinubu for his longstanding support of the private sector, Dangote described him as the visionary behind the Lagos Free Trade Zone, a project initiated during Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos State.

The Dangote Refinery, one of the world’s largest single-train petroleum refineries, is a key component of Nigeria’s efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency and boost economic growth through industrialization.

His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu; Chairman, Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote; Chairman, Geregu Power PLC, Femi Otedola and Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, at the state-of-the-art Main Control Room of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, during the President’s tour of the facility, on Thursday, June 5, 2025

“The Dangote refinery complex is, in many ways, your brainchild,” Dangote told the President. “Mr President, let me just say one thing — the main road leading into our refinery is now to be known as Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road.”

Following the announcement, President Tinubu rose to shake hands with Dangote in a moment that drew applause from the dignitaries in attendance.

Dangote also revealed that, despite paying N450 billion in taxes last year, the Group is committed to spending N900 billion on road infrastructure across Nigeria. The Deep Sea Port Access Road, he said, is one of several roads built and being developed by the Dangote Group under the Federal Government’s tax credit scheme.

The Dangote Group is currently the highest tax-paying company in Nigeria, contributing more in taxes than all the country’s banks combined. Read More

Obasanjo Backs ADC as Coalition Platform for Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai Ahead of 2027

Obasanjo Backs ADC as Coalition Platform for Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai Ahead of 2027

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is reportedly rallying support behind the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) as a strategic platform for top opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai, ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The ADC, known for its relative independence from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is being positioned as a “clean slate” party—untainted by past governance controversies and increasingly seen as a viable alternative for Nigerians disillusioned with traditional power blocs.

Political insiders suggest that Obasanjo’s perceived alignment with the ADC is already transforming the party’s outlook, potentially giving it access to critical resources, grassroots networks, and elite political endorsements.

“The ADC’s untainted status and growing national appeal make it an ideal platform for a realignment of political forces ahead of 2027,” a senior party member noted.

Analysts believe that Obasanjo—widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures—may be crafting a long-term strategy to forge a strong opposition coalition capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu’s expected re-election bid.

While each of the rumoured 2027 contenders currently belongs to separate political camps—Atiku with the PDP, Obi with the Labour Party, and El-Rufai a former APC governor—all three are navigating internal tensions within their parties, prompting speculation of a possible defection to a more neutral platform like the ADC.

“Joining the ADC could offer these politicians a fresh start, access to Obasanjo’s influence, and a chance to shape a party not bogged down by old loyalties,” a political analyst observed.

The ADC’s emerging status and lack of baggage from past ruling party affiliations could appeal to a broad base of voters seeking credible alternatives in 2027.

As political realignments continue to take shape, all eyes are now on the ADC and whether it will evolve into the launchpad for a formidable opposition alliance. Read More

Tension in Osun APC as AMBO Supporters Allegedly Insult Tinubu Over Adeleke Visit

The optics have sparked unease among APC supporters in Osun, with many fearing a behind-the-scenes alliance

Tension in Osun APC as AMBO Supporters Allegedly Insult Tinubu Over Adeleke Visit

“It’s a lie,” AMBO Camp Denies Allegation

What began as whispers in political circles has quickly spiraled into an all-out war of words within the Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as loyalists of two governorship aspirants; Dr. Ajibola Bashiru (SRJ) and Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), clashed over growing suspicion surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent engagements with the Adeleke family.

At the heart of the controversy is a series of visits by members of the Adeleke political dynasty; led by Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun and his nephew, award-winning singer Davido, to President Tinubu’s Lagos residence.

While no official explanation has been provided, the optics have sparked unease among APC supporters in Osun, with many fearing a behind-the-scenes alliance may be in the works ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial election.

Tensions peaked when some supporters of the AMBO camp were accused of insulting President Tinubu over the alleged plan to sell the party’s ticket to the Adeleke family.

On the flip side, SRJ’s supporters were themselves accused of being loyalists of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, allegedly working to destabilize the party from within.

In a sharp response, Dr. Ajibola Bashiru came out swinging during an address to his supporters.

Responding to insinuations from the Oyebamiji camp that he was still closely aligned with Aregbesola, Bashiru acknowledged their past alliance; but swiftly redirected the spotlight.

“Let’s not pretend,” he said pointedly.

“Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola played a central role in restoring progressive governance in Osun. I was one of the lead counsels in that journey. But if we’re talking loyalty, then let’s talk facts; Bola Oyebamiji is still taking instructions from Aregbesola.”

Bashiru argued that Oyebamiji’s long-standing service under Aregbesola, including as Chairman of Osicol and Commissioner for Finance, undercuts any claim of political independence from the former governor.

“They’re trying to label me a stooge to Aregbesola just to curry favor with Oyetola’s allies, yet they remain deeply tied to him,” he said. “It’s nothing but hypocrisy.”

Not letting the attack go unchallenged, the AMBO Media Front, led by Adebayo Adedeji, fired back in a blistering statement, rejecting claims that their supporters had insulted the President over the Adeleke visits.

“We wish to categorically state that no supporter of the AMBO project has insulted or disrespected President Tinubu,” the statement read.

“The claim is a fabrication; mischievous and intended to tarnish our principal’s image.”

They reaffirmed Oyebamiji’s loyalty to the APC and the Tinubu-led administration, highlighting his work as MD/CEO of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and his strong alignment with the “Renewed Hope” agenda, particularly in advancing the marine and blue economy sectors.

“Since the news of the Adeleke visit broke, no member of our team; online or offline, has said anything remotely disrespectful about the President or any party leader,” Adedeji noted.

“We are focused on issues, not distractions.”

But observers say the public spat is exposing deeper rifts within Osun APC.

With the party still smarting from its loss in the 2022 gubernatorial election, insiders worry that internal strife could derail efforts to mount a credible challenge in 2026.

Even more worrying for party strategists is the growing perception; right or wrong, that President Tinubu may be warming up to the Adeleke dynasty. Whether symbolic or strategic, such a move is stirring unease in APC ranks.

Some party members argue that the fears are not entirely misplaced, pointing to what they describe as the Adelekes’ “history of political disloyalty”; often switching party allegiance as long as it aligns with their ambitions.

As it stands, the APC in Osun appears to be walking a political tightrope: one misstep, and the party risks entering the 2026 race more divided than ever. Read More

I Believe In Merit – Tinubu To NCC’s Maida

I Believe In Merit – Tinubu To NCC’s Maida

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Aminu Maida, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), of his backing to uphold merit in the Commission’s affairs.

Maida, who doubles as the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, has faced mounting criticism from staff who failed to meet the 70% cut-off mark in the Commission’s latest promotion exercise.

The promotion, conducted in March 2025, has continued to stir discontent, with affected staff forming a group called the “Concerned Staff of the Nigerian Communications Commission” to demand redress.

While Maida has not publicly addressed the staff concerns, he sought the intervention of President Tinubu to defend the integrity of the process.

The disclosure was made by Sam Omatseye, chairman of the editorial board of a prominent national newspaper, who recounted the encounter in his article “One Day With President Tinubu.”

Omatseye described how Maida approached the President to discuss pressure to compromise on recent hires. “I observed comings and goings like a fly on the wall,” he wrote. “One was from Aminu Maida, who wanted the President’s backing on recent hirings. He was under political pressure to replace merit with corruption. ‘I believe in merit. Do what is right,’ said Tinubu,” Omatseye recounted.

The promotion exercise, which elevated 239 staff members, has become a flashpoint between management and workers.

While some staff allege that the process favoured colleagues selected for elite foreign trainings at institutions like Harvard University and the London School of Economics, the NCC leadership has attributed the scaled-back perks to federal government cost-cutting measures. The Commission says it now prioritises staff welfare through improved salaries, allowances, and benefits.

Although some employees claim that the promotion pass mark was unilaterally raised from 60% to 70%, records show the 70% benchmark has been consistently applied over the past five years.

A breakdown of the promotion exercise by geopolitical zones shows: South East – 25.74%, South South – 16.91%, South West – 16.91%, North Central – 13.97%, North West – 13.24%, and North East – 13.24%.

The NCC management maintains that the promotion process was fair, transparent, and consistent with the agency’s longstanding standards. Read More

APC Dismisses ‘Automatic Ticket’ Rumors Ahead of 2027 Elections

By swiftly debunking the rumor, the APC hopes to put anxieties to rest and reinforce its commitment to open, competitive primaries

APC Dismisses ‘Automatic Ticket’ Rumors Ahead of 2027 Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly denied claims that sitting lawmakers in the National Assembly will be handed automatic tickets for the 2027 general elections, branding the reports as “fake news” with no basis in party policy.

In a statement on Tuesday, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, urged party members and the public to ignore what he called a deliberately misleading narrative.

“The report is fake news and of mischievous origin,” Morka said. “It should be disregarded in its entirety.”

The false claim—amplified by a viral headline reading “APC Grants Automatic Tickets to All National Assembly Members”—sparked concern among party faithful, particularly aspirants at the grassroots and state levels who feared being sidelined.

But sources close to the party leadership insist there has been no directive to waive primary elections for sitting senators or House members. In fact, the APC National Working Committee has reportedly never discussed such a proposal.

According to the party’s constitution, all candidates—regardless of incumbency—must compete in party primaries and win the support of delegates.

Internal debates over delegate selection and zoning arrangements have fueled speculation, but APC leaders say reaffirming transparent nomination rules is key to maintaining trust and fairness.

By swiftly debunking the rumor, the APC hopes to put anxieties to rest and reinforce its commitment to open, competitive primaries. Read More

Lagos to Reintroduce Monthly Sanitation Exercise, Cautions Traders, Cart Pushers

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to reinstate the monthly environmental sanitation exercise as part of its renewed effort to promote proper hygiene, reduce flooding, and build a cleaner and more sustainable city.

Speaking during an inspection tour of Idi-Araba, Orile Iganmu, and Alaba Rago, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, urged residents to adopt good sanitation practices as a daily habit.

“The government is committed to maintaining a clean and safe environment for all. We are bringing back the monthly sanitation exercise, and an official date will be announced soon,” Wahab told journalists.

Crackdown on Cart Pushers and Illegal Dumpsites

Wahab disclosed that intelligence reports had identified a syndicate behind the illegal cart-pushing business in Idi-Araba. He reminded the public that cart-pushing is banned under Lagos State environmental laws.

“At Idi-Araba, we saw numerous cart pushers operating illegally. There has been statewide enforcement against this, and we are intensifying efforts,” he said.

He also flagged an illegal dumpsite in the area allegedly controlled by cart pushers, pledging firm action to eliminate it. Additionally, traders under the Daleko Bridge were warned against selling in unauthorized spaces.

Alaba Rago Market on Notice

During the visit to Alaba Rago Market, Wahab expressed displeasure at traders dumping waste on road medians and obstructing drainage channels.

“They have turned the road median into a refuse dump and extended the market onto the road. We’ve given them until Monday evening to clear these infractions. Failure to comply may lead to the market being sealed,” he warned.

The market’s chairman reportedly agreed to take corrective action, but the commissioner stressed that enforcement will be swift if infractions persist.

Waste Blocking Channels in Orile Iganmu

At Orile Iganmu, Wahab observed that the Iganmu Channel was clogged due to indiscriminate dumping of waste. He ordered the deployment of swamp buggies next week to clear the debris and restore the flow of stormwater.

Waste Collection and Public Responsibility

Wahab also addressed the ongoing challenges with waste collection, revealing that the state has deployed over 100 LAWMA trucks to assist struggling PSP operators. He blamed part of the issue on residents who refuse to pay for waste disposal services.

“People want to enjoy services without paying for them. That model is not sustainable,” he said. “We all must take ownership of our environment. Stop dumping waste in drains, roads, and canals. Bag your waste properly and patronise PSP operators.”

He concluded by urging Lagosians to support the government’s efforts by adopting responsible waste management practices and complying with environmental regulations. Read More
