Ex-Minister Amaechi Plots Political Statement with Grand 60th Birthday Bash in Abuja

Ex-Minister Amaechi Plots Political Statement with Grand 60th Birthday Bash in Abuja

Staff Writer

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, is set to mark his 60th birthday in grand political fashion this Saturday, May 31, 2025, with a high-powered two-part event in Abuja that insiders say could signal a new chapter in his political playbook.

Although Amaechi turned 60 on May 27, sources close to the former governor say the real celebration is slated for the weekend—strategically timed and meticulously planned not just as a personal milestone but as a potential political statement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The celebration will kick off at 10 a.m. with a birthday lecture at the Ladi Kwali Hall of the Abuja Continental Hotel (formerly Sheraton). Themed “Weaponization of Poverty as a Means of Underdevelopment: A Case Study of Nigeria,” the lecture is expected to draw dignitaries, thought leaders, and political heavyweights from across the country.

Later in the evening, attention will shift to the Transcorp Hilton for a lavish Birthday Gala beginning at 7 p.m., where Amaechi will host a constellation of politicians and allies—many of whom have remained loyal since his days as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly (1999–2007).

Newsheadline247 gathered that invitations have gone out to an extensive list of past and present lawmakers, including former speakers from across the country. Notably, whispers in political circles suggest that the guest list—and the tone of the events—are designed to reassert Amaechi’s relevance on the national stage amid an increasingly complex political landscape.

While President Bola Tinubu is expected to send a representative, observers note that Amaechi’s recent political isolation from the APC hierarchy and his continued rivalry with Nyesom Wike—his one-time ally turned arch-foe—have raised the stakes around his next move.

Once allies, Amaechi and Wike have become locked in a high-profile feud, worsened by a controversial power arrangement that left Wike, now a key figure in the opposition PDP, wielding significant influence in Rivers State to Amaechi’s detriment.

Those familiar with the plans describe the birthday as a “no-expense-spared” event, with full accommodations reportedly arranged for out-of-town guests. “It’s not just a party—it’s a platform,” one source hinted, suggesting that the celebrations could serve as a springboard for Amaechi’s political repositioning.

As the political class converges in Abuja this weekend, all eyes will be on Rotimi Amaechi—not just to toast his 60th birthday, but to decode the signals from what is shaping up to be one of the most politically symbolic celebrations of the year. Read More

Court Sets June 3 for Arraignment of Suspended Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan Over Defamation Charges

Akpoti-Uduaghan had alleged that both Akpabio and Bello attempted to initiate her recall from the Senate and later conspired to orchestrate her assassination

Court Sets June 3 for Arraignment of Suspended Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan Over Defamation Charges

Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed June 3, 2025, for the arraignment of suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over charges of criminal defamation, following allegations she made against prominent political figures.

The case, filed by the Federal Government, stems from remarks by the embattled Kogi Central lawmaker implicating Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in an alleged plot to assassinate her. The arraignment notice, Suit No. CR/297/25, was signed by court registrar Hiradi Dada.

According to court documents, the charges were brought by the Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federation (DPPF), under the Federal Ministry of Justice, on May 16. Akpoti-Uduaghan is being prosecuted under Section 391 of the Penal Code, which criminalizes statements made with the intent, or reasonable belief, that they could damage another person’s reputation.

The DPPF, led by its director M.B. Abubakar, alleges that the senator knowingly made defamatory claims that could tarnish the reputations of both Akpabio and Bello.

The Allegations

The case centers on statements made by Akpoti-Uduaghan during a 3 April appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’. In the interview, she accused Senate President Akpabio and ex-Governor Bello of conspiring to eliminate her following the withdrawal of her security detail after her suspension from the Senate.

Ex-Kogi Gov Yahaya Bello

“I stand by what I said… Akpabio had a meeting with Yahaya Bello that night to eliminate me,” she alleged on air. “Just ask the Senate President why he withdrew my security if not to make me vulnerable to attacks.”

The senator also referenced her long history of political violence since 2018, claiming that the removal of her security exposed her to further threats.

The interview was not the only instance of her making such claims. At a homecoming event on 1 April, she alleged that both Akpabio and Bello attempted to initiate her recall from the Senate and later conspired to orchestrate her assassination.

According to her, the plan was allegedly discussed during a late-night meeting on March 13, following a phone call from Akpabio to Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State.

“The meeting had two objectives: to begin my recall and to arrange for my assassination,” she claimed, adding that Akpabio allegedly advised Bello to ensure the act occurred in her constituency to make it appear as a local attack.

Akpoti-Uduaghan said she has formally reported the matter to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Denials and Counteractions

Both Akpabio and Bello have categorically denied the accusations and have petitioned the IGP for a full investigation. They maintain the senator’s allegations are unfounded and damaging.

As the legal proceedings approach, the case is expected to draw significant public attention due to its high political profile and the sensitive nature of the claims involved. Read More

Tinubu Saved Rivers from Chaos — Fubara Hails President’s Emergency Intervention

Fubara praised Tinubu’s decision to initiate an emergency peace process and called on Rivers people to show appreciation to the President

Tinubu Saved Rivers from Chaos — Fubara Hails President’s Emergency Intervention

Suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as a “timely and wise intervention” in the state’s deepening political crisis, which he said helped avert a full-blown breakdown of law and order.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Simplified Movement in Port Harcourt on Thursday, as part of his two-year anniversary in office, Fubara praised Tinubu’s decision to initiate an emergency peace process and called on Rivers people to show appreciation to the President for preserving democracy in the state.

“We are already in the peace process. I want you to thank Mr President for his timely intervention to salvage the situation, and stabilise the polity and the State,” Fubara said.
“If not for Mr President, the story today would have been different. I don’t know how he gets his information, but the truth is that he acted with wisdom at the right time. He is the one you should thank.”

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara revealed that the reconciliation process between the executive and legislative arms was ongoing and that normalcy would soon return to all government institutions in the state.

“I want to assure you that the issues will soon be resolved, and you will come back to your offices — not just at the Executive arm, but also Legislative arm,” he said. “And I also believe that the strong relationships we had before will return, and we will begin to work together again, for the good and progress of the State. What is important is for us to have a forgiving spirit.”

The governor emphasized the need for forgiveness and reconciliation, even as tensions continue to simmer following a protracted power tussle in the state. He urged stakeholders to put personal interests aside and focus on Rivers State’s stability.

“We have to come down from our high horses and subject ourselves to the peace process. And that is what we are doing. What is important is for the State to move forward. It is not about you, the interest of the State is paramount.”

Fubara acknowledged the disruption the crisis had caused, noting that the anniversary celebration would have otherwise showcased developmental achievements.

Despite the tension, the governor hinted at imminent reconciliation with his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, signaling that backchannel discussions were ongoing.

“There is no reason why there will not be peace between me and my Oga,” Fubara said.
“There will be peace. We are meeting. We will reconcile.”

He expressed gratitude to the people of Rivers State and Nigerians at large for their support during the turbulent period, assuring them of his continued commitment to service.

“One important thing in this life is respect. I want to earn the respect of the people, not force it on them. I’m with you completely.”

Fubara concluded by apologizing to anyone who may have felt let down by his approach, stressing that all his actions were rooted in a desire to protect the state’s peace and unity. Read More

EFCC Re-Arraigns Fadama Society Executives Over Alleged ₦178 Million Fraud in Jos

The defendants allegedly set up the cooperative society as a front to lure unsuspecting investors into putting in large sums of money with promises of high returns

EFCC Re-Arraigns Fadama Society Executives Over Alleged ₦178 Million Fraud in Jos

Jos, Plateau State – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned two executives of the Covenant Fadama Multi-purpose Cooperative Society, Okewole Dayo (Secretary) and Bishop Katung Jonas (Chairman), over an alleged ₦178.8 million fraud and money laundering scheme.

Appearing before Justice Sharon T. Ishaya of the Federal High Court in Jos on Thursday, the duo faced a 23-count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretence, and money laundering, according to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale.

EFCC investigations revealed that the defendants allegedly set up the cooperative society as a front to lure unsuspecting investors into putting in large sums of money with promises of high returns. The funds were reportedly funneled through several bank accounts, laundered using proxies, and used to acquire properties in Jos and Kaduna.

One of the charges, Count 2, reads:

“That you, Okewole Dayo (alias Okewole David Dayo) and Bishop Katung Jonas, sometime in 2012, knowingly transferred ₦50,000,000 from the Cooperative’s First Bank account into another account representing proceeds of unlawful activity, thereby committing an offence under Section 15(2)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2012.”

Count 8 alleges: “That the defendants obtained ₦10,000,000 from Reke Vida Ltd under false pretence, claiming it would be invested with a 10% monthly return—a promise they knew to be false—thus violating Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud Act, 2006.”

Both Dayo and Jonas pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Prosecuting counsel Ibrahim Buba informed the court of the Commission’s readiness to begin trial, stating: “We are prepared to open our case and bring witnesses. A hearing date is already fixed for tomorrow, my Lord.”

However, defence counsels cited personal and logistical challenges. J.J. Achi, representing the second defendant, disclosed a family emergency requiring his attention, while C.I. Nwogbo, counsel to the first defendant, said he had not received Certified True Copies of the prosecution’s documents and needed more time to prepare.

Justice Ishaya voiced frustration at the delays: “The prosecution is coming from Abuja. I do not appreciate a situation where counsel travels such a distance without making any progress.”

When asked about witness availability, Buba said: “We had 18 witnesses. Due to time, some are now unavailable, and two are deceased. We may need to bring in new witnesses.”

Justice Ishaya subsequently adjourned the case to July 22 and 23, 2025, for continuation of trial. Read More

$12M Money Laundering Case: Court Sets June 4 Arraignment for SunTrust Bank MD, Compliance Chief

The EFCC is accusing the top bank executives of conspiracy and illegal cash payments amounting to millions of U.S. dollars

$12M Money Laundering Case: Court Sets June 4 Arraignment for SunTrust Bank MD, Compliance Chief

Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled June 4, 2025, for the arraignment of Halima Buba, Managing Director/CEO of SunTrust Bank Ltd, and Innocent Mbagwu, the bank’s Executive Director and Chief Compliance Officer, over an alleged $12 million money laundering scheme.

Justice Emeka Nwite fixed the new date on Tuesday following legal wrangling between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the defense counsel regarding the proper service of the charges.

The EFCC is accusing the top bank executives of conspiracy and illegal cash payments amounting to millions of U.S. dollars—allegedly made outside of any financial institution, violating Nigeria’s anti-money laundering laws. The charge specifically references a $2 million cash payment to one Sani S. Ali Fagge, an associate of Suleiman Muhammed Chiroma, on March 20, 2025, without using a financial institution—an act deemed illegal under Sections 21(a), 2(1), and 9(1)(d) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

At the resumed hearing, EFCC counsel Iheanacho, SAN, informed the court that the Commission had been unable to serve the defendants but acknowledged that their legal representatives were present and had expressed willingness to accept service.

“My lord, the prosecution has not been able to serve the defendants. Ironically, their lawyers are in court and have offered to accept the charges, but I must first seek the court’s approval through an ex parte motion for substituted service,” Iheanacho explained, citing Section 382(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

Defense counsel J.J. Usman, SAN, countered that there was no need for such formality since his team was ready to receive the charges in open court.

“Our clients read about the case online and instructed us to appear. We offered to accept service in court, but the EFCC declined. It raises questions about their intent,” Usman said, also urging the court to restrict any potential arrest or media parade of the defendants pending arraignment.

Iheanacho dismissed the defense’s concerns as “speculative,” maintaining that EFCC operatives retain the constitutional right to arrest suspects when necessary.

Justice Nwite, in a brief ruling, stated there was nothing unusual in allowing the defense lawyers to accept service in court and directed the EFCC to file the appropriate application for substituted service by Thursday, May 29, 2025.

The court will proceed with the arraignment of the defendants on June 4, 2025. Read More
