Nigeria’s major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are behind the “killing of innocent Nigerians, snatching and burning ballot boxes in today’s Presidential election.”
“President Buhari and the APC leadership must know that they are directly responsible for the killings in Rivers state, the violent snatching of ballot box and burning of electoral materials in Lagos and various other states where compromised security agents were used to directly interfere in the electoral process,” PDP spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan said in a statement on Saturday.
“The party, however, says that nothing can break the will of the people in their determination to stand till the end, in voting out the incompetent, corrupt and oppressive APC administration,” he added.
This came after sixteen people were reportedly killed in electoral violence across Nigeria during presidential and parliamentary elections.
The Situation Room umbrella group of pro-democracy groups, which is monitoring the vote, said on Twitter that “16 deaths have been recorded across 8 states”.
Violence recorded included “disruption of voting, ballot boxes and papers set ablaze by political thugs in Lagos”, it added, without giving further details.
In Rivers at least four persons, including two chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress, have been shot dead in separate incidents by suspected thugs in Asarama, Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The opposition party, however, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to “ensure that all votes count as Nigerians are following all the figures from the polling units.”
