House of Reps Summons Emergency Plenary Tuesday to Tackle INEC’s 2027 Election Timetable

Nigeria’s House of Representatives is set for an emergency sitting on Tuesday as lawmakers prepare to scrutinise and respond to the 2027 general election timetable unveiled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last Friday.

In a statement issued by the House Spokesman and Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Akintunde Rotimi, members were formally notified through an internal memo from the Office of the Speaker, emphasising the “constitutional and national significance” of INEC’s announcement.

Rotimi explained that the special plenary will focus on “matters arising from the schedule of activities and timetable released by the commission,” ensuring the House fulfils its oversight role and addresses any legislative implications swiftly.

“The notice of the plenary was conveyed to Members through an internal memorandum from the Office of the Speaker drawing attention to the constitutional and national significance of the development and the need for timely legislative consideration,” he stated.

He stressed that the emergency session demonstrates the House’s determination to act decisively on issues critical to Nigeria’s democracy.

“This emergency sitting reflects the resolve of the House to respond promptly to issues with far-reaching implications for the nation’s democratic process,” Rotimi said, adding that deliberations will centre on “relevant legislative matters connected to the announcement, in line with the constitutional responsibilities of the National Assembly.”

Lawmakers have been strongly urged to attend in full force.

“Honourable members have been strongly advised to prioritise attendance, given the importance of the issues under consideration,” the statement read.

Rotimi reaffirmed the House’s broader commitment:

“The House remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions through responsive and responsible lawmaking, and acting in the best interest of Nigerians on all matters.”

With the 2027 polls now firmly on the national radar, Tuesday’s session is expected to set the tone for how the legislature will engage with INEC’s roadmap in the coming months.
