In a swift response to a viral video exposing extortion by officers on the Benin bypass, the Nigeria Police Force has launched a formal investigation and initiated disciplinary proceedings against those involved.
Six officers—alongside their supervising Chief Superintendent of Police—have been summoned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, following widespread public outrage over the video. They appeared before the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, who condemned their actions as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable.”
The IGP wasted no time in ordering immediate disciplinary measures. The accused officers have been issued official queries and are now facing orderly room trials—a step that could lead to dismissals or other severe sanctions if found guilty.
