In a major political move ahead of the 2025 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention, Northern stakeholders of the party have thrown their weight behind former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, endorsing him as their consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman.
The endorsement followed a series of high-level consultations and strategic meetings among Northern party leaders, culminating in a decisive stakeholders’ session held in Abuja.
Party insiders confirmed that the gathering also reaffirmed the zoning of the chairmanship position to the North-West, a development aimed at strengthening unity, inclusivity, and internal equity within the PDP ahead of its convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Speaking after the meeting, a senior stakeholder said the endorsement reflects the region’s determination to rally behind a trusted and experienced leader.
“We have agreed that Kabiru Tanimu Turaki represents the best choice to lead our party at this crucial time. His leadership experience and loyalty to the PDP are unmatched,” the source disclosed.
With Turaki’s emergence as the North’s consensus choice, key party figures say the region is presenting a “unified front” to reposition the PDP as a credible and cohesive alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Another participant at the meeting added, “This is about rebuilding the PDP from within and ensuring that we go into the 2027 general elections stronger and more united than ever before.”
The development is expected to reshape the contest for the PDP’s top leadership seat, giving Turaki a significant advantage ahead of the party’s elective convention in November.
