Fake Drugs Worth Over N1 Trillion Destroyed in Anambra, Says NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit, substandard, and fake pharmaceutical products valued at over N1 trillion in Anambra State.

The destruction took place at the Anambra State Waste Management Authority Dump Site in Agu Awka, overseen by NAFDAC’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the agency’s South-East Zonal Director, Dr. Martins Iluyomade.

Among the destroyed products were Analgin, controlled substances like Tramadol 225mg, and various other unregistered and expired drugs.

These items were confiscated from the Onitsha Bridge Head Drug Market (Ogbu-Ogu) and the Ekumi/Tenant Road drug market in Aba.

Adeyeye reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to ensuring the safety, quality, and effectiveness of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water, and beverages intended for human consumption. She emphasized the agency’s dedication to eradicating substandard drugs and protecting Nigerians from health risks.

The recent discovery of counterfeit products in major markets is alarming, with banned items like Analgin and controlled substances such as Tramadol 225mg being sold openly.

NAFDAC’s enforcement exercise, which ran from February 10 to March 5, led to the seizure of large quantities of narcotics and unapproved medicines. The estimated value of the destroyed products is over N1 trillion, helping to save millions of people from potential harm.

NAFDAC’s management has pledged to continue fighting against fake drugs, acknowledging the complexity of the issue. The agency reassures Nigerians that certified medicines are safe and suitable for consumption, maintaining its commitment to protecting public health and safety. Read More
