PDP Leaders Meet Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to Resolve National Chairmanship Crisis

PDP Takes Leadership Crisis to Jonathan as Rival Chairmen Deepen Party Rift

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday intensified efforts to resolve its prolonged leadership crisis, holding a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.

The high-level consultation took place at Jonathan’s Maitama office in the Federal Capital Territory, drawing together key stakeholders of the opposition party.

In attendance were members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), state party chairmen, former governors, members of the Board of Trustees, founding fathers and mothers of the party, former ministers, and other senior figures.

The meeting comes amid a deepening internal rift within the PDP, with two factions laying claim to the position of national chairman.
One camp is backing Abdulrahman Mohammed, who is reportedly aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, while the opposing faction is supporting Taminu Turaki, with the backing of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, Turaki said the visit was aimed at consulting the former president for guidance and formally introducing members of the newly constituted NWC, elected at the party’s national convention in November 2025.

“We came to see former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, first to introduce members of the newly elected National Working Committee to him, and then to brief him on what we have been doing since our election,” Turaki said.

The PDP has been grappling with internal divisions since the convention, with party leaders seeking reconciliation ahead of future electoral contests.
