Peter Obi Defects to ADC, Vows to Challenge APC in 2027
Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling a major shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 polls.
Obi announced his defection on Tuesday in Enugu, alongside several political leaders from the South-East geopolitical zone, following what they described as months of wide consultations.
The group said the decision to align with the coalition-backed ADC was informed by the need to collaborate with opposition forces across the country to “rescue Nigeria from the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
Speaking at the event, Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, said the move marked the beginning of a renewed political struggle focused on rebuilding national hope ahead of the next general election.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi said.
He also pledged to defend the integrity of the electoral process in the coming polls.
“We will resist rigging of election by every lawful means in 2027,” he added.
The ceremony was attended by Senator David Mark, the national chairman of the ADC, alongside other key political figures from different parts of the country, underscoring growing efforts to consolidate opposition strength ahead of the 2027 elections.
