The Department of State Services (DSS) has uncovered plans to stage violent protests aimed at discrediting the federal government and security agencies over sundry socio-economic matters.

The security agency said student leaders, youths, ethnic-based associations, and disgruntled groups are being mobilised for the protests.

The DSS said it has identified the “ring leaders of the plot” and that they are currently being monitored.

In a statement released on Monday, the Department of State Services (DSS) spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, revealed that intelligence reports suggest politicians are behind the violent protests.

Afunanya said the “masterminds” would be stopped from “plunging the country into anarchy”.

The service advised vice-chancellors of universities and heads of tertiary institutions to discourage their students from engaging in acts capable of destabilising public peace.

“Also, parents and guardians are enjoined to admonish their children and wards respectively to shun the lure of participating in inimical behaviours or conducts against law and order,” Afunanya said.

The DSS warned those “desirous” of subverting national security to retrace their steps.

The DSS revelation comes on the heels of the planned two-day strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) scheduled to start on Tuesday.

The labor union plans to strike in protest of petrol subsidy removal’s impact on the masses.
