Power generation increased by 30% in 2024 – Minister Adebayo Adelabu
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has announced that power generation in Nigeria increased by approximately 30 percent in 2024. He made this statement during his ministry’s 2025 budget defense before the Senate Committee on Power at the National Assembly complex.
When Adelabu took over the ministry in 2023, he encountered an average power generation of 4,100 megawatts. He stated, “I can tell you authoritatively that by the end of 2024, we achieved a peak generation of 5,528 megawatts, significantly up from the 4,100 megawatts we started with.”
The increase was largely attributed to the addition of the new Zungeru hydroelectric power dam, which contributes 700 megawatts to the grid. Furthermore, there was a notable enhancement in the generation capacity from existing generation companies.
Adelabu indicated that the target for power generation was set at 6,000 megawatts. However, due to challenges experienced toward the end of 2024, particularly concerning grid collapses, the ministry narrowly missed this target.
In addition to expanding energy access, the minister highlighted that the sector plans to stabilize the grid and improve other transmission infrastructure. Read More
