Veteran Nollywood actor Ramsey Nouah has revealed that he has never won an Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) throughout his decades-long career in the film industry.
The seasoned thespian made the disclosure during an appearance on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast. Nouah recalled that his sole nomination came in 2011 in the Best Actor category for his role in the historical drama 76.
He was up against industry heavyweights Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD) and the late Olu Jacobs. According to Nouah, he lost the award largely because of the voting system at the time.
He explained that the AMVCA was then predominantly determined by public votes, unlike the current hybrid model that combines viewers’ choice with a jury decision. The older system, he noted, favoured nominees with stronger social media presence and larger followership.
“I never won an AMVCA. I was nominated for best actor in 76 and I lost. At the time, it was predominantly viewers choice award. Now, you can have the balance of the jury and then the viewers,” Nouah said.
“At that time it was predominantly viewers and the guy who was stronger on social media got it over us. And the nominees were myself, RMD, Uncle Olu Jacobs and the guy won every one of us because we weren’t strong on social media at the time.”
The revelation has sparked conversations among fans about the evolution of the AMVCA voting process and the impact of social media on award outcomes in Nollywood.
