State Creation: Remo, Ijebu Set Up Committee to Resolve Grey Areas

Major stakeholders from the former Ijebu Province have established a harmonization committee to address differences as they pursue the creation of their own state within the Nigerian federation.

This decision was reached during a consultative meeting held on Friday at the palace of the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi.

The committee consists of seven members each from the Remo and Ijebu zones.

Friday’s meeting followed a similar gathering at the palace of the Awujale of Ijebuland in December 2024.

The event was attended by dignitaries and royal fathers from across Remoland, as well as a prominent emissary from the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. Stakeholders at the meeting agreed that the creation of a new state from the historical Ijebu Province is long overdue.

In his remarks, Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, representing the Ogun East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, urged local leaders to avoid unnecessary conflicts, which have previously hindered similar efforts. He emphasized that while the process of creating a new state under the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution is challenging, it is achievable through concerted and determined efforts.

In December, a bill for the creation of a new state from the old Ijebu Province, sponsored by Senator Daniel, passed its first reading, effectively initiating the state creation process.

However, there have been concerns regarding the naming of the proposed state and the location of its capital. Many stakeholders in Remo, particularly the youth, argue that the current proposal risks overshadowing the history and interests of the Remo people in favor of their Ijebu counterparts.

The establishment of the harmonization committee aims to address these concerns and present a widely acceptable position to advance the state creation process.

The creation of the harmonisation committee is however set to address all concerns and present a generally acceptable position to advance the process of state creation. Read More
