2027: Ex-Enugu Governor Sullivan Chime Backs Tinubu’s Re-election, Predicts APC Landslide in South East

Former Governor of Enugu State, Barrister Sullivan Chime, has openly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office, throwing his weight behind the recent adoption of the President by South East governors and All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in the region.

Chime declared that he was part of the endorsement from the outset, expressing strong confidence that President Tinubu and the APC would record a decisive victory across the South East in the 2027 general elections.

He spoke on Tuesday in Udi, Enugu West Senatorial District, during the flag-off of the APC electronic membership registration (e-registration) exercise, describing the endorsement as a collective and strategic decision of the region.

“Tinubu Has Done Well”

The former governor dismissed criticisms trailing the endorsement, insisting that President Tinubu’s performance justified the renewed confidence reposed in him.

“I am part of the South East, so you can take it for granted that I was part of that endorsement. That is our decision and we all stand by it. It is easily achievable,” Chime said.

According to him, prevailing economic and social challenges in Nigeria should be viewed within a global and continental context, stressing that the President has performed well under difficult circumstances.

“The President has done well. I believe he has done well. Whatever is happening in Nigeria is global and certainly in Africa. It is all over the place. He is doing well, given the circumstances,” he added.

Chime noted that he would speak more extensively on the 2027 elections as the campaign season draws closer.

“Elections are coming up next year. He will do well. When the time for campaign comes, we will talk,” he said.

APC Gaining Strong Ground in Enugu

Expressing delight over the growing enthusiasm for the APC in the South East, particularly in Enugu State, Chime said his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after the 2015 elections had been vindicated.

According to him, the APC has become the dominant political force in Enugu State, with massive grassroots support already evident.

“We are here first of all to thank our people. You can see how excited people are to join the APC. APC is now the only party available in Enugu State,” he said.

Chime also expressed confidence that the state would exceed the two-million membership target set for the ongoing e-registration exercise.

“Ten years ago, when I joined the APC, we saw tomorrow. We knew PDP was going down. It is now obvious that APC is the only party available. So, the two-million mark is just a starting point. We are going beyond that in Enugu State,” he stated.

Council Chairmen Pledge Massive Mobilisation

Chairmen of local government areas in Enugu West Senatorial District also pledged massive mobilisation ahead of the registration exercise.

Those present included:

  • Hon. Hyginus Agu (Udi LGA)
  • Prince Ugochukwu Nwanjoku (Aninri LGA)
  • Hon. Uchenna Okoko (Awgu LGA)
  • Dr. Vita Ndu (Ezeagu LGA)
  • Hon. Greg Anyaegbudike (Oji River LGA)

They unanimously assured that grassroots mobilisation would ensure the registration of over two million APC members across the state.

Speaking on behalf of the council chairmen, Hon. Agu praised Governor Peter Mbah for his performance, noting that development projects were visible in every ward.

“The truth is that our governor has done so well. We have multiple projects in every political ward to brag about. The people are happy and, as far as they are concerned, Governor Mbah is their political party.

“He has chosen APC, and the people stand solidly with him and our dear President,” Agu said.

South East APC Adopts Tinubu

The endorsement follows last weekend’s meeting where Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo, and Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, alongside APC leaders and stakeholders in the South East, formally adopted President Tinubu as the region’s sole presidential candidate for 2027.
