ABUJA, Nigeria, July 29, 2023/ — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has convened an Extraordinary Summit of the Authority on the political situation in the Republic of Niger.
The Summit will hold in Abuja, on July 30, 2023.
The ECOWAS Leaders will be considering and discussing the political situation and recent developments in Niger during the Extraordinary Summit.
The president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, who was democratically elected, was ousted from his position by the very individuals who were meant to safeguard and maintain his authority – the presidential guards who were stationed outside his residence.
Niger’s President Bazoum made history as the first elected leader to succeed another since the country gained independence in 1960.
After the coup, the captors suspended the country’s constitution and appointed Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani as the new head of state.
