Tinubu Embarks on Strategic Türkiye Visit to Deepen Nigeria’s Security and Economic Ties

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Monday, January 26, depart Abuja for a state visit to the Republic of Türkiye, as part of efforts to deepen Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic, and security relations with the Eurasian nation.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who said the visit is aimed at strengthening the longstanding cordial ties between both countries while unlocking new areas of strategic cooperation.

According to the Presidency, discussions during the visit will focus on expanding collaboration in security, education, social development, innovation, aviation, as well as other mutually beneficial sectors.

The trip comes more than three years after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan paid an official visit to Nigeria in October 2021, underscoring the growing diplomatic engagement between Abuja and Ankara.

During President Tinubu’s stay in Türkiye, both countries are expected to hold high-level political and diplomatic talks, with emphasis on shared priorities in finance, communications, trade, and investment.

A major highlight of the visit will be the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering critical areas such as scientific research, energy development, technical cooperation, media and communications, military collaboration, and diplomatic protocol.

The visit will also feature a Nigeria–Türkiye Business Forum, bringing together top investors and private sector leaders from both countries to explore new opportunities for bilateral trade, investment partnerships, and industrial cooperation.

President Tinubu will be accompanied by a high-powered delegation, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd); and Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Hon. Jimi Benson.

Other members of the delegation are Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu; and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.

President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the state visit.
